Hi all,
I haven’t played GW2 in about 6 months and decided to play again. I expected to need to download a bunch of updates. What I wasn’t expecting was running updates for 14 hours and still only having 10% completed. I blame my internet provider for choking download speeds anytime I attempt a large download. They obviously deny it. I have highspeed with unlimited access but I have noticed major slowdowns when downloading.

So basically what I want to know is do I have to download every single update/bug fix in order? The updater is showing over 92,000 more files to download. Nowhere can I see total download size but at this rate it will be a week before I’ll be able to play. Is there some way to just download just the most recent version of the game?

I’m open to ideas

You’re downloading the expansion files which is why it is taking so long. You are downloading the most recent version.

Bummer
Without knowing the total file size of the updates I cant even guess at how long this will take. So if I were a new player installing for the first time I would experience the same thing?

Pretty much… if you had installed fresh, it would be about as bad.

The download chunks weren’t too large in the months leading up to the expansion pack, because they dribbled out expansion files within normal updates to accommodate the beta weekend events. Those who updated regularly didn’t need to download much more on launch day.

But because you missed out on the partial updates, you have to download everything expansion-related in one large dose. Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but I think the expansion amounts to an additional 11 gigabytes on top of the core game.

Even if you had to download the entire game from scratch it shouldn’t take 14 hours. This sounds like something you need to work out with your internet provider because something is wrong with the connection. You could try reinstalling but I’m not sure that would help your downloading speed at all.

It only downloads the difference. HoT wasn’t very large, though a portion of it was released over time in the months prior to launch. 6 months is probably around 7 GB. View the properties of Gw2.dat. It should be around 27 GB by the end.

If you have 92k files remaining after 14 hours though, you’re either downloading extremely slowly, or it’s redownloading the entire game at around 400 KB/s. The full game is 342k files. The game should however be playable using the streaming option once a chunk of it has been downloaded.

If you want to get the latest build, add -image to the target in the properties of a GW2.exe shortcut, they have also released a 64-bit client which you can get from your player control panel here at the site.
