It would be really cool if there were a new profession that utilized spears outside of water combat. Not like GW1’s paragon where you throw javelins, but an actual usage for it. Some ideas could be like:

1. Another elite spec for the warrior that allows one to use spears
1.1 This elite spec would be used more for power rather than condition damage
1.2 Focuses on defending
1.3 “Weak” in non team settings
1.4 close range, but since it’s a spear you can have a bit more distance.
1.5 two handed

2. Another elite spec for guardian, where they use it like a javelin. Much akin to GW1’s paragon.
2.1 focuses more on condition damage
2.2 Spear is mid range projectile, almost like a short bow.
2.3 one handed, can wield only a shield.
2.4 no traps.
2.5 definitely no traps.

I’ll throw my 5 cent of a brainstorm in this idea:
Warrior Elite Specialization: Knight
Spearskills
Skill 1 – Impale: Standard attack deals damage and cause vulnerability.
Skill 2 – Lancing strike: Deals massive damage and cause vulnerability.
Skill 3 – Phalanx volley: Attack 5 times and gain 2 seconds of Might for each attack.
Skill 4 – Defender: Gain protection and retaliation for 3 seconds.
Skill 5 – Present Spear: Channel for 5 seconds, Gain 1 stack of stability for 5 seconds, block one attack. If an attack was blocked, attacker takes damage.
Vows: The warrior gain vow skills. Each vow has a passive effect and cannot be activated. (all vows have Range 900 and affect Up to 5 targets, including the knight himself)

  • Healing Vow of Valour: The Knight regain X HP every 15-X second. X= the amount of allies within the vows range.
  • Vow of Purity: The knight loose X condition every 15-X second. X = The amount of allies within the vows range.
  • Vow of Stability: Every 13 – X seconds, The knight gain 2 stacks of stability for 5 seconds. X = the amount of allies within range.
  • Vow of Death: If the knight is downed, enemies within range takes X damage for every ally within range.
  • Vow of Life: The knight revive Downed allies 5% faster for each ally within range. If the kngiht is not in combat, Dead allies are revived 50% faster, for each ally, that is not in combat, within range.
  • Elite Vow of Order: Elite The knight gain 10 toughness, 10 vitality and 10 Concentration, for each ally within range.
Class mechanic: Vow of Knightood When the Knights adrenaline is full, the knights healing power is increased by 100 for each ally in range.

Guardian Elite Specialization: Paragon
Spearskills
Skill 1 – Barbed spear: Standard attack that cause 1 stack of bleeding for 2 seconds.
Skill 2 – Blazing spear: Attack that cause 3 stacks of burning for 2 seconds.
Skill 3 – Symbol of Flames: A symbol that cause burning to enemies, puls 5 times over 5 seconds.
I do not agree that the spear should be limited to a shield combo only, since this was never the case in GW1.
Chants: Chants are cast instantly and can be cast simultaneously with other skills. They affect up to 5 allies within range. The allies gain a status effect which, when a trigger occur, does Something.

  • Healing Chant of Restoration: For 3 seconds, the next time an ally would take damage, he gain 1 second of a status that convert damage all incoming damage into health.
  • Chant of Fire: For 3 seconds, the next time an ally attacks, the attack cause 5 stacks of burning for 2 seconds.
  • Chant of Fury: For 3 seconds, the next time an ally attacks, the attack grant them 5 seconds of furry.
  • Chant of Power: For 3 seconds, allies gain might with every attack for the next 5 attacks.
  • Chant of Speed: For 3 seconds, if allies are in combat they gain 5 seconds of super speed and Vigor.
  • Elite Chant of Nullification: For 3 seconds, if an ally is affected by a condition, it gain 5 seconds of resistance and stability.
*Class mechanic: The Paragon gain regeneration for 1 second, every time an ally is affected by a chant or shout.

Think Ranger and longbow…then picture Dragonhunter (given to Guardian). Careful what you wish for. They will likely end up adding a spear elite (so people can play Paragon again) and give it to Guardians as well.

I had a Warrior elite spec idea to tie in with Tengu
It would be called “Samurai,” and it would wield Naginatas. It’s utility skills would be meditations, and the new Focus bursts would be stronger and faster than regular bursts but require 5 bars instead of 3.
Unfortunately, video games have a thing for ignoring how almost everybody used polearms back in the day. Swords were a fashion statement and a sidearm that would be used when the polearm was no longer usable.

Would be nice to see spears and tridents get land based use.

but what about spearguns? I guess they could be made useable on land but they would be thematically very close to rifles.

Tridents and Spearguns are effectively Staves and Rifles respectively. So, no.

Your names are completely out of sync with the gw2 universe though. Even on Cantha they didn’t use the japanese names. A Samurai, is basically just another word for a soldier.

I’d say yes~. It would be awesome to get some actual use out of these weapons, and there are lots of skins for them allready in game.

I’m not sure what you are basing the fact that trident/spear are effectively staves on. If you mean in real life, a spear or trident has different uses then a staff. If you mean in game then it’s even more different, there is currently only ONE class that uses a staff in the sense that it is a melee weapon. So unless implying that spear/tridents are weapons used to shoot beams, rainbows, fire, or light waves I think the spear and/or tridents could be very different.

Spear guns vs riffles, maybe make them a shorter range more controlly weapon.

He were talking about riffles and tridents, not spears o.O And Tridents are functioning exactly like staffs underwater… The in game function would thus already be there.
However I think that Surface tridents could server a different purpose than the staffs and underwater tridents.

Ahh I just figured he meant the weapon type based on it’s graphic look xD, and this is a thread about land spears so I figured spears should be the focal point

They aren’t exactly the same, some are even more different depending on your professions.

Which trident works the same way as the ranger staff, guardians staff, and especially thief staff?

There are some similarities for the others, but I wouldn’t say they function “exactly” the same.

The guardian staff and trident and the druids staff are much alike. The thief and reverent staffs are more like spears. The druid staff is a lot like the guardian staff.
The way I see it, they should just add the trident skins to the staff skins. Many of them are the same, anyway. ^^-
And who ever said “exactly”?

You did xD.

I agree they have some similarities, I just disagree they are exactly the same. Hrm I don’t really play guardian, I wasn’t aware that their trident 1 was the wave style attack. The 2 is pretty close. The 3 from staff adds a buff instead of just AE damage. The 4 are pretty different and the 5s are both control type effects, but the use is different.

If you mean more over all, the staff and trident have the same overall function, support focused with a bit of damage I would agree. I just don’t think having the same function is equal to playing the same.

Having more options like land spears, tridents, and spear guns would add new aways to do different jobs for each prof. As well as add a little bit of use for the underwater weapons which are sorely overlooked.

Touché ;P

I did mean overall functionality. :P and that I still think is exactly the same.

I do not think that adding more weapons with the same functionality would have any benefit at all.

But hey, we are slightly out of the topics core, if we continue in this like we’re going to get this thread closed. Lets continue another place.

It’s still semi close, land spears would have the same over functionality as other land melee weapons (for the most part). Over functionality being the same isn’t always bad, Every DPS weapon has the same over functionality as other DPS weapons they may do things a little different but the goal/over all goal is the same.

Having two support weapons which accomplish the same thing but differently can be fun. I do really wish land spears and land water weapons would happen:( Or A-net could improve underwater combat functionality and necessity, I just fear underwater combat is sunk; so land spears/weapons is the best hope xD
