Using autohotkey for playing instruments
About authotkey
HAve you heard of the “combat mode” gw2 mod? it’s written in authotkey, and the arenanet employees have already said they tolerated that software:

Gayle Gray’s response: http://i.imgur.com/VH0Nf.png
She’s basically saying that if you don’t use third party tools to gain an unfair advantage, it’s fine.
Make sure to read all those threads to know exactly what has been discussed!
I’ve read everything carefuly and for me, it’s not an unfair advantage over someone else,
even if the script press timed buttons, because for example I’m not in a pvp or wvw fight with other players. Just a instrument will be played ^^
Is not it?
I also thought about using AHK scripts for playing instruments.
But then I decided those would give me a non-monetary, yet still “unfair advantage” over people who can actually play as good as my script would, so decided not to. It’s more of a moral thing here, I think.
I sent in a ticket asking the same thing and got told from a support rep that macros are not allowed. I wonder if the support person did not fully read my question but rather answered in a generic it says the word macro so it is ban-able response.
A lot of keyboards have macro software in them, and those are not bannable.
Check this posting by Gaile Gray about macro software
i use autohotkey once a month to play. however, this is to bind the mouse wheel since this game doesn’t support this function.
best statistical loot in the game. We want everyone on an equal power base.”

This. This is exactly what I’d like to know.
Because I can’t see a proper answer. I sent a ticket, all they tell me is “macro are not allowed”, well great my good sir, but is performing one action per one wheel roll still not tolerated ? They didn’t want to answer this, and it’s really bothering me.
Would binding left click to wheel to open those 250 stacks of bags/essence of luck/whatever be an “unfair advantage” ? Already broke my g500’s click doing that, and I don’t fancy breaking another one, mindlessely clicking on virtual items. But then again, I don’t want to get banned either, and I still have huge numbers of things to open (and there’s really no reason for the mouse wheel not to be bindable, by the way). My mouse’s software can’t bind the wheel so I’d have to use AHK, but it looks kind of like a grey area while ANet sees it in white and black. No warnings, just banning, that’s not what I’d like.
Yes, I do have to use a 3rd party program since I can’t bind the wheel IG, nor can I open all of my stacks by right-clicking > open all, and that is a huge issue ; yes I know it’s “at my own risk”, but that doesn’t mean anything besides “might get banned, might not, who knows, play your luck” (RNG bans coming soon :?). No, that is not a macro since I perform only one action at a time ; yes and no, that can be considered as an advantage since I don’t destroy my mouse and my time opening everything, but that doesn’t help me performing better, it’s basically the same as those achievements that recquired macros so you don’t die from repeating the same thing over and over again in gw1.
Practically the same goes for OP ; except it’s a macro, since it presses multiple keys at once. But that doesn’t give him an advantage besides playing cool songs and cheering up the group he is with. I’ve seen “yes you’ll get banned”, I’ve seen “no it’s okay”, I’ve mostly seen “do it if you’d like but we could maybe ban you if we’re in a bad mood” redposts, but in the end I’d like a real answer to that. Even if combat mode is tolerated, does that mean the rest is ?
For christmas I’d like to get a crossbow for my characters.
With love, a cute kitty.
Unless you are pressing one physical key per each individual action, it is not permitted. Anything that presses multiple buttons per single user button-press or key-press is not allowed.

Thanks a lot for your reply. So can you clarify just to be sure : can I bind left click to my wheel (aka wheel down once = one click, not multiple clicks or anything) with AHK and not get banned by an automatic bot detector or something ? Even if that would happen, would I get to clarify the situation with the support or would they deny my request ?

If you press one key, and it sends a command to ‘press’ all those numpad keys, then no, it is not allowed. One key press/one action, be it a skill for a weapon or a skill for an instrument.

Doesn’t this say, that the “general statement is that anything that gives advantage is forbidden.”. And based on my example, what real playful advantage would exist?

Script =/= mod. A script is essentially a bot. So, no, you cant use it.
The thing is…if you want to use it, go ahead. If your account gets banned because of its use, well, you were warned.
Is it worth the hassle of trying, and maybe failing, to regain the use of your account?
Combat mode is a script, from what I know. Still allowed apparently.
I’d like a short yes/no answer from Mark about my question if you ever come back around – would be really thankfull.

Mark, Gayle has already said that Combat Mode was approved:
Combat mode holds keys down permanently beyond a one button per action.
Why was this script authorized by your employees when it clearly acts on more than one button press per action?
Please, keep consistent in your answers. Gayle says something, you say something else.
Enlighten us.

GW2 doesn’t support mods. Combat Mode is a script made in AutoHotKey.
Don’t be pedantic, please.
They have no way to check if you are using Keyboard/script to press buttons. So unless you do not use it to bot, you are safe.
Make a macro to click on a WP in dungeons and it acts likes you are falling :P
(edited by Pandeh.5248)
Good point, Pandeh.
Considering the amount of hacks in gw2, the wall hacks, teleport hacks, invincibility hack, etc hack, and none are detectable…
Using autohotkey is probably the last thing that’ll get you banned, since tons of people use Combat Mode
Just don’t start bragging about it, because it is probably against the rules.

How comes you guys are able to find time to answer to something incredible unimportant like playing an instrument but we don’t hear anything about the future
or status of the game ??
Stuff like that really annoys me especially when A-Net always says they don’t have time to answer

Gem Stores 2
Did you see the latest Gem Store 2 update? They decided not to include their main feature Dollars to gold. Wierd huh.
Next step is to remove it and design the game around something other than RMT.

This is not really clear. If i record some , e.g 10, sequence of key presses and trigger it with only one key, it will behave like i’m still pressing 10 key and you can never know this. No1 in earth can recognize it is a macro technically, not intuitively

Being a tad insulting with that last statement, not everyone knows who is and isn’t a dev, a little decorum please.
Mud Bone – Sylvari Ranger
Not allowing this little thing means we can hear less perfectly played/synced instruments around the world, and due to that, a lot of people just won’t buy them.
I think if we would be able to make music-tabs ingame to the instruments, their playability and sales would be increased greatly. I would buy a harp if I could play “Rains of Castemere” with a single button push.
(Another good feature is the pre-recorded tunes like at Drum and SAB Music Box, but when you want else than GW2’s OST, it will be trouble)
1 to X key bindings are always a question. When AN gives you no option to consume a lot of bags/else, should we really forced to click like a maniac? Guess the “consume all” feature is planned, but really, anything that doesn’t give countable advantage in fights/money, shouldn’t be a reason to ban.
“A man chooses; a slave obeys.” | “Want HardMode? Play Ranger!”

Based on what I remember from disassembling a mouse, you’re technically pressing the “button” multiple by rotating the wheel, even if “pressing a button” involves rotating an obstacle near a photo sensor.
That said, I remember a thread on the subject where a dev said they can’t elaborate on particular actions, and it felt like they have to be deliberately vague just in case.

You can look at it that way: GW2 MMOs are about prestige; playing music perfectly is part of prestige, just like beating Liadri or speedclearing Lupi is. So yes, that’s not monetary, yet still an advantage.

No great knowledge on the subject, but it would seem rather logical to me that one “tick” of the wheel is equal to one action just like it zooms once when I wheel up/down once (talking about one rotation = just like scrolling down/up once on the page here = only one move). Isn’t it the case ? Would look pretty weird…
Well yes, you can take that as an advantage. As I said, no mouse breaking (+50$/£/€ you won’t throw out of the window), you don’t go crazy doing it and yes that might makes things faster. But then you can say everything’s an advantage, including combat mode which was regarded as not bannable apparently. Is playing an instrument well because you have a macro allowing you not to fail an advantage ? Yes you play it well more consistantly, but this doesn’t give you the slightest advantage otherwise, and people around you won’t go jealous, they’ll just like it (and more instruments buy = more gemzzzz).
Hacks are studied to work while not being detected, AHK is not. We don’t really know how their bot detection work, and the “advantage” area is chaotic. Gayle told us they can’t support scripts or mods, but this subject has been asked many times for the exact same reasons, and never have they clearly told us if “RE-BINDING” just as we would re-bind in the game in a one key press on action mode is okay. Not supporting it, we take responsability for a possible malware. Just telling us if re-binding something will ban us from their game, since they’re the ones who know it.

Nevermind I checked Kurrilino.2706’s post history, I’m going to go with “ignorant and self entitled”. Sorry, I was directing it at people like him, not at everyone in this thread. Not being in the most patient of moods doesn’t help either.

That’s neither hard nor illegal to detect a constant 300 millisecond delay between identical key presses in a game which transmits user key presses to the server as part of the game mechanic itself.

So all in all: No one knows nothing and there is no clear answer if its official allowed to use things for pressing keys.
Official rules say you can automate key presses only if 1 key press does 1 action. If 1 key pres does 2 or more it’s not allowed.
But then they’re also selling GW2 keyboard with in built in macros that does the same thing Autohotkey does actively breaking their own rules.
It’s a gray area, but most likely they won’t ever ban anyone for using macros.

If 1 to X key bindings are not allowed then ANet really needs to allow us to consume a stack of items. 250 double-clicks on multiple stacks means RSI by design and breaking mouse buttons by design. (That could be an interesting legal case)
Anyone for the drinking achievement? I’d autohotkey that one!

And what about things like Champion bags? Consuming a “stack” of those would fill up your inventory instantly, which probably isn’t the desired effect.
You do realize that there is no need for this functionality, right? They already circumvented it with the manufacturing of Essences of Luck. It’s be much easier to just add alcohol that gives you more progression. Similarly, rather than allowing you to buy in bulk, they can just add tabs where you can buy larger stacks of items from NPCs.
So, in Bell Choir, those that use a macro/script to hit the keys in a certain order and time (it is a song) won’t have an advantage?

There is a need and as someone that has about a thousand champ bags and two thousand supply box worth of materials you can trust me on that, and you can also trust me that I am not an exception, I know people that have much larger needs for that. Anet is perfectly able to do a "open until inventory is full ; when inventory is full, stop and if necessary put on the “your bag is full and the following items are waiting” window". Or, at worst, “open until you have 4 cases left in your inventory, then stop”, that way it’s even easier for them. This should have been there from the very start, it’s simple and necessary in the game gw2 has become. The fact you don’t need one is no excuse to tell others it’s not necessary when it’s been requested many times.
Anyways, we don’t care about that, since they’ll do it whenever they feel like it. All we care about is if AHK is okay.
For christmas I’d like to get a crossbow for my characters.

Well i do hope anet can see this and do something about it.. These days eles are super fast! Blasting multiple skills at once for big bursts attacks. And i dont say they all use it but some does because they are waaay to fast for pressing those skills at once.

Then they’d have to ban users that use their official GW2 keyboard too. Not that there is any legal way for them to detect weather someone uses Ah or not.

If gw2 had any sort of anti hack, then maybe we wouldn’t have so much hackers ingame.
Why does gw2 even allow teleport hacks to work? Without insta banning the user?
There’s no detection, really. it’s mostly based on player reports
Okay just out of curiousity:
-Having a script that counts the amount of times you pressed the z-key (for example) and plays the same amount of notes afterwards would be okay then, right?
You pressed, lets say, 10 keys and afterwards 10 notes will be played (which equivalent 10 keys). That could not be exploited in combat, since you don’t know how fights will go in advance.
- Also if you make a Autohotkey Script which does only mousepositioning should also work then. So lets say i want to enter “Lion’s Arch” and hover my mouse over the playerportrait, do a leftklick, press z, the script moves my mouse to “Enter Lion’s Arch” and presses the left mousebutton (only 1 keystroke for one action). Then if i press it again it moves the mouse to the “okay the map is full” window and presses leftMousButton. Should also be allowed then, I guess.
Working around the “One Keystroke”-thing is pretty interesting ^^
(That was just an idea, so let my know your thoughts on that)

Okay just out of curiousity:
-Having a script that counts the amount of times you pressed the z-key (for example) and plays the same amount of notes afterwards would be okay then, right?

They are not going to allow loopholes to their rules, that can only end badly for them.
You need to start thinking like a company with legal concerns. If they officially endorse anything, it causes a storm of problems. It is far easier and better for them to ban macros all together, rather than allow some and not others.
That said, what they SAY vs what they DO will not always line up. I believe that ENFORCEMENT of this rule will likely hinge on the advantage statements they have mentioned multiple times.
So if you are waiting for them to give the official “ok,” it will never happen. That said, I know people who have been macroing the choir bell since it came out ~18 months ago, and have not been punished.

Unless you are pressing one physical key per each individual action, it is not permitted. Anything that presses multiple buttons per single user button-press or key-press is not allowed.
How comes you guys are able to find time to answer to something incredible unimportant like playing an instrument but we don’t hear anything about the future
or status of the game ??Stuff like that really annoys me especially when A-Net always says they don’t have time to answer
Because Mark isn’t a developer. Do you people read or are just plain idiots?
Who said something about developer ???
You don’t need to be a developer to answer questions about the direction the game is heading ??
Do you really think Mark has no idea what’s going on ?????
Is he coming to the office every morning and is told “mark don’t ask any questions about GW2, it’s not your job. You just talk with the comunity about anything but GW”
