Dear GW2 Staff and Players,

As a long time member of GW2 the greatest feeling this game has given me is a sense of community and helpful fun attitudes. For over 2 years I have never once had an issue with a player. I came from a long line of League of Legends gaming and frankly I left that game because of how horrible the community was. Now recently I had to report a player during a super casual CoF dungeon run. Why? because this player began to spout out all this harassment on us. It made me uncomfortable and brought back many bad memories of bad times playing LoL. While I understand GW2 has a competitive side as well in no way does running a casual dungeon warrant such abuse. And here is where my concern lies. ANet, how will you respond to the ever growing population and how will you address these players who bring their rage and toxicity into our game? I do not want to see our game filled with a community of raging, and angry people but i realize that that will happen eventually. I just want to know that ANet and the players realize their duty to keep this game at the best and most friendly community of any MMO. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

Bloodsoaked Orchid

Sadly, all we can do is report, block, and carry on.

I understand where you’re coming from regarding this issue. It’s something more than a few have voiced concerns about, even all the way back to GW1. Its more than just an issue in games these days though.

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

Bring rage and toxicity to GW2? Guess you weren’t around for Marionette event and Queensdale champ train, as examples. Been here for a good while.

I used to regularly save the Quaggan in Frostgorge just to watch map chat explode.

Map chat here has been some of the most toxic I have ever seen and I’ve played MMOs since 2003.

Ley lines. The perfect solution to deadlines and writers block. Now in an easy open Can.

I’ve not had a problem with this out side of PvP.

The few times I have had problems I just tell them, “welcome to blocksvil, population: You”

While ideally it would be nice to never encounter this, I would say that, for online gaming, you having 1 bad experience over 2 years is quite an incredible feat. I think that worrying about the change in community after 1 thing happening seems a bit premature. Perhaps you’re worried about the F2P players? But if it was in CoF and the F2P people just started, it probably was a paying costumer. I’m unsure of why the community will become “raging, and angry people” suddenly. A lot of the limits to the F2P players will help limit the abusive people, and anet has probably other things they are monitoring to keep it in check, but won’t tell us what so that it’s not easier for people to circumvent those checks.

To be honest, I never understood the word ‘abuse’ or ‘bullying’ when it comes to online games…

I can understand when it’s related to Social Networks, where you share slices of your life with random people who may even be close to you, but here? Which need there is for ANet to get involved when the party leader can simply kick an unpleasant player out of the party and people can block said player?

What can someone, whom most likely doesn’t even knows you in real life, do? How their insults can actually reach you? There’s a very deep wall between you and the other players, a wall that keeps you safe from harassament by mean of a single basic concept: “Not Caring”.

It already exists in the block feature. Very handy.

Unfortunately, due to the wide scope of things, they can only help if you report the offenders, so please report them as you see; inaction will only make things worse.

for there you have been and there you will long to return.

One incident in two years, is one incident… and not a trend. It’s a bit early to consider that this is a sign of things to come or that we will “see our game filled with a community of raging, and angry people but i realize that that will happen eventually” when the report and block feature so far has kept this in check enough that you’ve only seen it this once in two years.

If the player was verbally abusive, block and report to let ANet handle it.

Be careful what you ask for
ANet may give it to you.

Thank you all, I was not very aware of the block feature. As i never had to use it >_> our community is pretty much awesome. so thank you for giving me insight and I hope you are right one incident does not equal trend.
