There are some good things that came with Heart of Thorns, but with only 4 explorable areas, and a short story, I would have to say it is not worth the asking price of $60 if you’ve already purchased the base game. If you have not already done so I would suggest waiting for a sale.

Edit for Clarification: If you already own the base game and are hesitant to purchase Heart of Thorns, I would suggest waiting for a sale.
If you are a Free Player to GuildWars, I would suggest purchasing Heart of Thorns because of everything else that would be unlocked with that purchase.

Depends on your playstyle and what kind of things you enjoy.

If you love exploring areas, finding new things around every corner, and looking for the veritable needle in the haystack (or forgotten mask in the trees ), HoT is for you.

If you love doing event chains that tell stories and require a bunch of people to cooperate at times, HoT is for you.

If you love huge map-wide meta events and world boss encounters that require more than just “press 1 and win”, HoT is for you.

If you enjoy scavenger hunts and collections, HoT is for you.

If you are fine with mobs that come in different sized packs and bring different abilities, making you adjust to fights out in the countryside and accept that you can’t just stroll past them all the time, then HoT is for you.

If you like to play just wherever the game sends you and jump into whatever event crosses your path, HoT is for you.

On the other hand:

If you like to have a clear way to a specific goal you want to reach right now, HoT can be frustrating, since there’s so much to do that not every path to every meta event, collection item, or resource, is open all the time.

If you prefer to farm for specific resource, HoT can be frustrating since most stuff is spread out and not easily farm-able (although that’s not so much different to the rest of the game).

If you feel like an experience bar has to filled optimally at all cost, HoT may not be for you, since concentrating on filling the mastery bars instead of taking in all of the stuff the expansion offers may quickly lead to a very grindy feeling.

If you are uncomfortable with a surrounding changing in difficulty (and even availability) based on the actions of all players on the map, HoT might not be for you, since all the new maps revolve about map-wide meta events that you don’t always can influence to the point where you’d like it to go.

If you don’t like the fact that certain parts (group events, champion hero points, etc.) might require a couple of other players to stroll by and participate, so won’t be available to you just the moment you stumble upon them, then HoT could hold some frustrating moments for you.

My personal opinion:

I love HoT. I’m the type of casual player that just jumps into the game whenever time allows (not that much with family and fulltime job) and do whatever fun things seem available at the time. There are a few collections and achievements I’d like to finish, but the base game has taught me that going for one thing specifically is (for me) a recipe for quick burn-out, while just playing what seems fun at the moment and going with the flow of the maps makes me end up with anything I’d want eventually, while having fun all the way.

On the other hand, I do like to learn my classes and come up against challenging content, and the HoT open world definitely is a good bit more challenging than anything core Tyria has ever thrown at me. Sometimes it does get frustrating, but then I’ll just go do something else and come back another day.

HoT is a full win in my book, but I can see how many people with different playstyles and priorities just don’t enjoy it as much as I do.

I don’t think we can judge HoT like any other traditional Xpack. Usually you solely judge an expansion by the content that is present at release. GW2’s expansions seem to be different. Instead of buying what the expansions come with right off the bat, you’re pretty much buying an x years sub fee, as LS updates can be considered part of the expansion in a way, they’ll only be available for HoT owners. So I think the better question is, for the last 3 years, or however long you’ve played for, do you think buying the original game was worth it, along with all that came thereafter?
Personally I think what I paid for the original GW2, and what it gave me for the past 3 years was amazing. Sure, HoT has way less to offer right off the bat, but if ANet manages to keep the content with GW2 post-launch quality like they did for the past years, I say it’s worth it.
I’ve personally been having a blast with all HoT has to offer!

HoT was worth it for me because of raid. I love the challenging raid. The new 9 elite specializations are awesome as well. I don’t really care that much about exploring maps and whatnot… so maybe that’s why I don’t share the same discontent as other gamers.

Like I’m not the type that would try to find a Jumping puzzle on my own, I just look it up on dulfy or youtube… some of them I would never in my life time be able to find if I had to do it on my own without guides. I just don’t have the talent for that sort of thing.

Like the not so secret jumping puzzle… I would never go to that cliff… much less look at the spinning gear on the ground, rofl.

Please nerf bag types instead of class skills!

I think the bulk of their profits come from the gem store, not just the game sales themselves. Their job now is to retain existing and new players. I think one of the goals of the HoT expansion is to entice veterans players back into the game. My suggestion is to tease players with Living Story season 3. They need to keep players curious, players might think, “oh I killed Mordy now, I’m going back to Fallout 4 and other games”.

Like the above poster said – right now, I’m not convinced. I do expect that the updates that will come should make it worth it in time. If you’re patient and don’t mind missing out on what the features have to offer RIGHT NOW then I think you could wait and see if the price comes down closer to what you estimate it to be worth.

I am the type of player who loves exploring and enjoying the beauty of the maps, stumbling on unexpected nooks and crannies. The new maps are gorgeous and very nice for this, but I don’t have time to enjoy them. I am always afraid that if I just stay and try to take it in, I will be ambushed by something nasty. It’s not the difficulty factor, it’s just not relaxing. I get that they were designed that way and I did like Silverwastes and Dry Top pre-expansion, but not all the time. It was easy to dip in and out of those maps and metas when I felt like it. Now, to see any of the new maps I have to constantly be on my toes and if I want to do the meta I have to hope I am in a good map or am in at the right time. Fine for a few maps, not good (for me) for a whole expansion. I tend to do my own thing in game and don’t like to schedule things – even the world bosses seem too restrictive. I do actually do a lot of group content and like metas where you need many people working together, but I don’t like needing it.

Masteries are a cool concept, but I think the payouts are ultimately disappointing. It’s just time gating and I don’t feel like I got anything cool (except gliding – that one was well done!) It’s just, finally, now the frog will talk to me and sell me some relatively unexciting stuff, or I can wade into poison to get a mastery point. Tyria Pact mastery is actually nice too – auto loot and city swiftness are nice bonuses I appreciate often.

The elite specs are fun. The ones I play are Chrono and Reaper, but they aren’t must-haves for me. Mileage may vary on this feature. It’s nice to have options, but again, it’s not as exciting or game-changing as I’d hoped it would be. That might be just my expectations though.

To be completely honest? No.
It has breath some life in gw2 for me. But in the end it is all a big grind. I want to enjoy the graphic and settings, but then I feel I miss out on something.
I would love a more immersive world, more NPC’s walking around and talk about new asura inventions and more.
It is still a great game all in all, but HoT is not worth the money they ask, especially not with the gem-shop and how they just spit new weapon skin out on a weekly basis, while not tending to balance, bugs etc.

It is what it is, and though I would like a world more like Black Desert, with housing like FF and combat like Tera, is it still a good game. So wait til HoT comes on sale.

This expansion caters to extremes. It has some very good stuff in it (story wise..maps and such are very well made with the premise they will add even more to them under the pretext of LS updates), the specs are interesting…masteries are cool. Promotes more team-play.

They also introduced precursor crafting and so on which is nice.

It also has some very poor sides to it (for me at least). The raids, the way they made them, do NOT! encourage “play the game how you want”. No…it actually forces you to play a certain class you might not like with a certain build you might not want and paying lots of gold for both of them which you might not have or want. It also promotes elitism and bm. For some it’s just content that they will never do because everything in it discourages it. They also introduced the holy trinity bluntly with raids.

Maps get “dead” fast…because all maps have a higher level of difficulty and almost everything requires groups and those groups (for some events) have to have the right gear..the right skills and know what to do otherwise it’s a guaranteed fail. ex: vinetooth and gerent. For some events, after people do them they never do them again because they already achieved their goal so ppl with experience in those events suddenly go away and u are constantly facing new ppl that don’t know what to do and ultimately fail it. Most noticeable at vinetooth.

If you are not playing at a decent hour for your server’s activity, most likely most meta events will fail because of lack of people. Predominantly empty maps.

All in all it’s 50-50. Depends on what you are looking for.

I can agree with Linfang.1087.

I like all the new features and all, but for the money…

For me on of the biggest fail was the storyline. For a whole expansion it seemed just like a demo or an extended version of the living story updates they did back then.

Depends on your goals and what you enjoy.

Personally, as a solo and casual player who plays in short spurts at off-peak times, I haven’t found it to have enough content of interest to me that I want to purchase yet. However, as prices drop, I might.

Other members in my household have purchased and found it ranging from enjoyable & worthwhile to not even bothering with it.

HoT is a blast, it’s different from the usual press 1 to win content we faced in GW2, thats why alot of people complain daily on forum, because they are unwilling to learn and change. If you want to ask these kind of questions forum is the worst place. Majority of people here dont like the game because there are not much reason to go on forum other than complain. People enjoying are playing the game , you would get different answers if you just ask in game.

HoT – The new PvE lands are a combination of crazy and cool.. I don’t mind them. But has anybody noticed how DEAD the new WvW borderlands are? I know people on many servers and so far I get the same story… People go into Eternal BL for the main fights etc, and only go to their own BL’s if they need to take a few things back. For the most part, the new desert borderlands are… deserted. They look cool… but are too big and cumbersome to get around in. Seriously, gliding should have been enabled for the new BL’s which would have made people at least be more interested in exploring and trying to figure them out. I used to be a HUGE WvW player and now I might go into WvW once a week for the guild missions or if I get tired of the PvE grind… Sadly ANet, you missed the boat on the WvW “enhancements”… they’re not giving us players what we wanted or needed. I’m hoping that you can do some tweaking to make them more attractive and bring people back into the home BL’s.

As per title. No idea if a solo player should purchase this or not. Opinions?

As a WvW focused player, absolutely not.

- failed DOT / DD balance – back to boring kitten power builds
- increased and further contributed to population imbalance issues on all fronts
- pve grind for specs
- pve grind for guild upgrades to the point that most small guilds have already disappeared from the game mode
- made asimmetric fights even more skewed towards blobs
- increased blob sizes due to increased map caps
- overall increasing number of people are leaving, disappearing and just not logging in anymore because of various issues HOT brought with it

so no, if it was worth it, it would cause more people to stay and return and log in more often, but it is doing the exact opposite.

As one of the posters above me stated, its worth around $10-$20 range for what is comparable and currently on market within the genre, but absolutely not $50.

The story content is hard to comment on, because it’s time-gated. You can’t progress until you grind through XP. Elite specializations are no better than regular specs, and in at least one case, far worse (ranger/druid). Masteries are cool, but the time it takes to get them is very grindy in actual HoT areas. In the rest of Tyria, they’re like perks that take a long time to earn, but there’s no downside to masteries in Tyria like those in HoT (grindiness, mainly).

I would definitely not buy it again if I had to do it over. The grind is just awful compared to what the game used to be, and the upsides are few and far between.

The pros to buying it:

New elite skills for your toons, new gear that matches your toon’s profession, the ability to craft precursors if you want a legendary weapon, the glider is a great addition, and improvements in how characters communicate with NPCs ( I like that).

The cons: This expansion is so trying for me to play solo I have joined two guilds. I would have kept going on solo but the map completion reward is an even better weapon for my necro, and by “gear” I hope they mean the Reaper armor that they showed in the previews to HoT. On the brightside, the new elite skills and weaponry as enabled me to get more out of old maps because it is easier to solo those with my new elite skills. In Orr I am soloing champions and winning (my girl is a condition build). Without the elite specializations it would not be worth it because the new maps are hard to play alone and I like playing alone. I like the guilds that I joined as well, but it wasn’t my agenda to join them, that was what anet pushed me into, and I wish HoT would be more solo-friendly.

Well I played the game for 3 years. The last year was spent in anticipation of HoT. I am currently playing something else that has WvW quite like what GW2 used to have. As far the new mastery/xp systems they added it began to feel to much like work for me trying to find open adventures, maps etc., so I moved on. I am sure many enjoy this new system, but I already have a full schedule and all I wanted out of a game was a place to log into and kill a little time relaxing.

I still do my dailies (for now), and I still do guild missions with my friends, but I’m more or less out. I didn’t want a game that makes me follow a bus schedule to have fun. I may return someday if they make another xpac more suitable to someone like me, so no you cannot have my stuff!

I pre-purchased the HoT pack with the Ultimate edition (mainly for the reduced cost gems, which was worth my money) I play PvE and play solo – but do team up in game for events etc.

I like the new maps. I love gliding – that is a great new addition – but I hate how confusing the maps can be and how some parts are gated.

Am I glad I got the game? Yeah, but there’s a bit of discontentment with it – I haven’t had a lot of time to play so when I see some players that have like 170 Mastery points I’m like WTF !? I was excited when I bought GW2 at the start of this year and regretted not getting it right away instead of sticking with GW. But in my honest opinion HoT hasn’t been quite what I envisioned. To me it kind of feels as if everything has to be rushed or timed / planned out or waiting for a spot in a LFG. And sometimes I just want to unwind and explore at my own pace, which is why I’m really behind with Mastery points. Not QQing just my thoughts on the game

I don’t regret buying it but…….

Finished the story pretty quick.
Got most maps 100% pretty fast. (One map to go I think).
Found the so called “Adventures” pretty frustrating and stupid. (And you have to do them to get mastery points).
Meta events mainly fail when you get in the tougher maps.
Maps are sparsely populated.
Places are hard to find. (When you or somebody else asks for help, you or they can’t get there).
Events are hard to find and get to because of the maps, some you see on the mini-map, but not on the main map.
Contested waypoints, all but one on a map can be contested.
Glidings cool.
Raids are off limits to me.

Was it worth it, maybe, if your a big fan of GW2 it’s an essential.

Edit…….
Forgot to mention, probably going to have a break for a while, sort of reached a stage where I log in, think what shall I do now, can’t be bothered, log out.

Like has been said, it all depends on what you like.

But opinion wise, no it’s not worth it right now. HoT has an enormous lack of content than what should come in an expansion. This seriously feels like a patch with a Living World episode (seriously, the story is that short). If it was 20 bucks, go for it. If it was 30 bucks, eh, but sure why not. But not for the price it is currently at.

The game is kind of a mess right now, especially with Anet not really having any specific focus with the game right now. And it’s now about buying your rewards instead of earning them. The Gem Store and Black Lion Chests has more content than HoT now, just in the few weeks HoT has been out.

But yeah, that’s my opinion. There’s more I’d go into, but most of the other posts have covered it already. Read reviews, check some other posts (though most are negative, but for good reasons), and watch some videos and come up with your own conclusion on if you should buy it or not.

I personally don’t play much anymore myself, as others have said too. Only time I log on now is when friends need help with something, otherwise, I’m off playing other games now. HoT kind of put the nail in the coffin for me.

I don’t own it, personally. I made that decision based on the information that’s been released. I’d advise you to go watch some gameplay videos, read some reviews and ask around in-game, if you want a more well-rounded perspective of things.

There are things in this expansion that seem compelling, but not enough to warrant the price, in my opinion. But everyone values their entertainment differently.

As a WvW focused player, absolutely not.

If you only play WvW there is not much in HoT (maybe the elites) for you to buy because the new WvW map can be accessed without having HoT.

Some people had hoped that the new WvW-map would only be accessible für HoT owners, so that the others could play on the old map they liked more.

Get it when it is on offer, half price or less.

Verdict? HoT any good / worth the money?

Current price of HoT is only worth if you play PvX and multiple professions. If you do one game mode, with one character, the price is way to steep.

Story is good, but not amazing (some huge cliffhanger issue’s, climax not reached when it should have).

HoT maps are amazing, I always loved mountains for their 3D feel, but this is even better. Especially Verdant brink is nice (the others, especially Tangled Dephts can be pretty hard to maneuvre).

Music is amazing, though some filler songs are way to soft. 10/10 score though for the Tarir+Tangled Dephts Meta event songs.

Elite specs 6/10 I think. To many feel incomplete. Others got nerfed so their existance is already flinging (druid).

Pvp: Bad. 2/10. Worst meta ever, Worst balance, League system is rushed, Elite specs kitten strong (perhaps to much). But if they are nerfing them in pvp, it will hurt pve ‘elite spec’ viability wich will be a rollercoaster of bad things to happen to gw2. Seen it before, and if they don’t split skills pvp vs pve, the future for Gw2 isn’t bright.

Mastery system 6,5/10. (If you play super casual, perhaps 5/10). It may feel grindy but it’s account bound, and you never loose what you finished. Aka got gliding? All your chars get it no matter what. Experience is very easy to obtain (I finished Tyria ones in under a month). HoT ones take a bit more time. The biggest prob is silver/gold adventures required for mastery point. Like the one with jumping as a mushroom where the required jump skill is very unresponsive and hard to understand how to use it, I think 90% of the playerbase will never reach even Bronze on that adventure. Bad implementation.

Verdant brink meta event 7/10 (improvement has to be made to make Axemaster (strongest boss) more rewarding so people don’t skip him. A solution must be found for afk ppl at Raid entrance.

Tarir meta event 9,5/10 (Some may score it lower). Personally i love the lore, the looks, the feel of the map, the meta event, the climax, the music etc. The start up (very earliest part of meta event) could be slightly more open i guess to all sort of players I think).

Tangled Dephts 7/10. It’s good, and challenging… Perhaps a little to much? Dunno. I don’t want it nerf per sé, but at same time, i have only tried the map once, and never looked back. Tried some lfg’s, but the very few ones that go for serious attempt always fill up crazy fast. I think this might get abandoned sooner or later completely by player (ghost zone), wich is not good though. Challenge vs accessibility, hard choice here. It doesn’t help the map is a crazy maze. Perhaps the entrances of ‘go above,’ ‘go below’ cave entrances should be better noted on the map?

Dragon stand meta 8/10. Pretty nice, but with the condition casual people really can make the map fail, and create toxicity. This map attracts everyone, the hardcore and the casual. But to combine them, it must have ways to succeed without having people do the wrong thing cause a failure. And for now, if people don’t know what a ‘preserver is’ or why they should ignore a mordrem mob army, it can really cause a big failure on the map while some ppl try crazy hard. For instance if 1 lane hold boss down for over an hour (crazy hard/challenging), but the others lanes just don’t get it done, it’s a huge punishment. Perhaps a consolidation price should be given per lane for keeping a boss down longer the 30 min? Not big ofc, but you know people and loots, they like it, perhaps enough incentive for people to learn. The end battle is epic (I have to say Anet finally got an end battle versus a dragon correctly visioned and implemented, of all things to fail, this was one of the first thing that i though would fail. But it didn’t. Amazing job whoever created this.

Thief elite spec: 4/10
Tempest 5,5/10
Druid 7/10 (was 8/10 first but the nerfs and changes made it worse)
Warrior: 5/10 (mostly cause it’s relative good in pve, bad in pvp)
Dragonhunter (7/10 – would get more if it wasn’t so one sided and boring spam traps)
Revenant 8/10 Would get more if base rev (not herald) was better implemented).
Scrapper: 8/10 While not perfect, Engie needed a melee weapon badly, and all 5 skills are usefull and fun + traits really bring something to the game
Reaper: 9/10 Design + utility + fun are amazing.
Chronomancer: 9/10 This was badly needed for pve mesmers. Might be a tad op in pvp though. (mostly the bunker version).

Wvw 4,5/10: new maps LOOK amazing, but don’t FEEL amazing. And: no incentive. Worst loot ever (no player to kill), etc. Nerfed badges rate in eotm etc. So no incentive is killing this mode (+ the map feels to big for 40 vs 40 fights).

Raids (5/10) are to focussing on the hardcore. The loot is to bad (yes to Bad you heard me, an Ascended piece should be garanteed, not a 1/4 RNG dice roll). Raids should not have been balanced on ascended stats (ascended armor is way more expensive then ever, not good, cause much players will cease their armor+raid attempts). The VG is ok I guess. Though it favors to much certain profs. Like why is an elementalist (squishiest prof in game), not top dps? It probably does half or 1/3 of what best dps specs do (wich are most of time much tankier. This creates a stigma ‘no tempest unless we know them’. ‘Definitely no thief’, etc. Should be fix. What makes it worse, pvp damage nerfs on auto attacks, could make raids harder without the intention of it.

Personal opinion.

Legendary weapons can be hidden now!
No excuse anymore for not giving ‘hide mounts’-option
No thanks to unidentified weapons.

For so little content?

- 4 maps that are just pretending to be huge. You will find yourself punished with less “participation” just because you decided to explore the map rather than do the linear events. And because your participation was so low, you get just the basic of basic of rewards.
Oh and remember to repeat that for every single map until you get the rewards from the vendors.

- Elite specs that force certain classes in specific roles. Good luck playing that power ranger as a druid… HAH. There goes the " We don’t like trinity system" talk.

- Have I mentioned that there’s only a few armor and weapons sets that are new? Really little stuff compared to the original game at launch. And if you consider the amount of Black Lion weapons that could’ve been a part of the expansion, its really disappointing – Pact weapons, Mordrem Weapons, Improvised weapons, to name a few.

- tl,dr: Do not buy HoT now, wait for a sale, it offers to little and what it offers is disappointing. I would feel better had I paid $20, instead of $50.

I’d second this.
Unless you are a total sucker for the game i’d reccommend you wait for some more content/ look for a sale.

I would prefer to TEST the new HOT game (test key for one weekend or 10 hours). I am a long time GW/GW2 player and my current feeling is to not purchase HOT for 50$.

They had that in GW1.
