They took it out about the end of September, just a few days back. I wouldn’t expect it back in the gem store until Spring.

Yep- I’d agree with Flesh Wound and predict Spring.

They seem to be initiating a “seasonal” gem-store, where there is a rotation every 6 months or so. We saw Zodiac armour removed about 6 months ago, and now it has returned after the removal of some other armours.

I never understand this rotational idea in item malls.

I was tempted by that Viper skirt as well. I so nearly brought it. I was that close (holds two fingers up very close together). I am still ‘that close’, and any day I could get the ‘mood’ to buy it. Yet Anet have made absolutely sure they don’t get my money.

I’m not complaining, I just don’t understand the logic.

Although it may not affect you (at least consciously) the tactic does work for the majority and often works on a subconscious level.

Scarcity (or the illusion of scarcity) makes an item far more desirable. Most people who were genuinely close to purchasing would jump on the item before it disappears. A lot of people don’t want to be in the OP’s situation- even if it means buying something that potentially won’t be used, or wouldn’t have been bought under regular circumstances (panic buying).

Moreover, I’ve seen some studies that suggest that fewer items/less cluttering means that people are more likely to actually purchase an item. Lots of information to handle and digest puts people off- even if that does mean a lot of choice and variety. More comparisons = more confusing = more effort to actually purchase.

Typical ‘any store’ selling psychology. The item isn’t selling well because it’s been sitting there for months. It’s old news and you can buy it ‘tomorrow’ (that is whenever you get around to it). Take it away for 4 to 6 months, bring it back for a short period of time and not only is it ‘new’ but you can’t wait till ‘tomorrow’ to buy it because it will be gone if you do. Result, people buy it when it comes back in larger numbers than what the sales would have been if it had been sitting there all that time.

In response to the good posts above…

I guess it does happen in the high street where they have a product for only a limited amount of time, more so in the ‘bargain shops’. But somehow I have never seen the latest model Mercedes bounce in and out of the showroom. Can’t say it’s a tactic that the high street has embraced completely.

I was tempted by viper as well and hope it makes a return. It looked great but having just bought Trickster’s (which I was happy to get while it was there) I was loath to spend a couple hundred gold more on another armor skin.

Keth:

If you are spending $80-$100k on a single Guild Wars 2 account you might want to seek help.

If you are trying to compare the business model of the in-game store…I still think of a car as a much larger purchase, especially a luxury/performance vehicle than say…a new set of clothes, toys or gear to use while trekking around the countryside. A much closer comparison would be one of those big grocery stores that also sells hardware and other home/workshop items. You’ll find they do similar things in the local Wal-Mart. Just try to find Pumpkin flavored hot cocoa or Egg nog outside their respective seasons.

Each model Mercedes is only a hot item for a year. After that the dealership no longer sells them (except to sell remaining stock) because the new Mercedes model has come out. In this case a Mercedes to armor comparison would be an armor set on sale in the gemstore until the next armor model has come out and the gemstore stops selling the old set. I’ve never done it but I assume you can’t go into a dealership and buy a unused car model from years ago from the factory.

Necrotic has got it bang-on.

You can’t compare “life altering” transactions to these in-game micro-transaction. The micro-transactions are there to try and convince you to purchase multiple items, similar in function but different in design or taste. The only competition the in-game shop has is with itself too, so not only are they trying to persuade you to buying an item, but they’re trying to persuade you to buy this item now and some other item later (whereas I doubt that Mercedes dealership is expecting to see repeat customers on a short time frame).

Festive/season-based food items is a good comparison- purchases don’t tend to be an expensive one-off and the pricing is in a similar range to gem-store items.

But it is very difficult to weigh up similarities between micro-transaction goods and real-life ones considering they are a “permanent item” (unlike food, which we do value differently) but also because there is absolutely no other way of obtaining such items elsewhere- in real life (regarding permanent items) you could turn to online auctions for example, which does change the scarcity and thus how we look at a product.
