Vitality - need some rework?
They’re both necessary.
Vitality is required for conditions, as they ignore toughness and armor.
Toughness is required for direct damage.
The thing is, for direct damage, both vitality and toughness play a role. For conditions, only vitality plays a role. Of course, it also comes down to what class you’re using: warriors and necros have a much higher base health than anyone else, whereas guardians and eles have easier access to protection, thus they would benefit more from vitality.
But if I had to choose one stat, I’d pick vitality over toughness. Simply because toughness has no effect on conditions.
Vit is fine, healing power needs a modest boost though. Not to much Because we do not want to have “Clerics” running around.
Vitality helps you survive both physical and condition damage. In a vitality build, heal skills are less effective due to large health pool vs physical damage compared to a toughness build. Heal skills are equally effective vs condition damage.
Toughness helps you survive only physical damage. In a toughness build, heal skills are more effective vs physical damage, equally effective vs condition damage.
It looks balanced to me. Vitality helps you survive both condition and physical damage at the cost of healing skill effectiveness vs physical damage.
Toughness helps you survive only physical damage, leaving you vulnerable to condition damage.
Oh wow, thanks for all the sweet answers, i really didnt see it that way and it make much more sense now.
Since i play a guardian conditions arent a big deal for me and its perhaps why i didnt notice much.
Thanks for sharing with me, learned alot!
I think it is a bad stat in guild wars 2 so far. Of course you want enough to not get one shotted but most people often just go for more toughness instead. Because even if you have 40k hp (exemple), if you dont have toughness, this hp will drop extremely fast and you arent able to fill it up.
Lol, there’s no need to read further than this. If you stack only toughness, you are useless as well, you need vitality to survive through conditions

Unless you play a class with constant condi removal like a SA Thief.
I’m confused…I’ve always heard the opposite. Vitality seems the way to go in this game unless you’re planning on catching lots of heals, which in the current state of this game..probably means you’re a Guardian or Elementalist?
This is the first I’ve heard that Toughness is overpowered…usually hearing that either Toughness or Healing Power or both could use love?
I would prefer anet to merge vitality and healing power, tbh. Cause most heals are so pitifull that any major investement in vitality becomes pointless, since you can’t heal yourself back up to full in combat anyway (unless you’re AH guardian). It’s a rather worthless stat to stack in most cases, just get enough to survive bursts.
