Wadrobe charges, yay or nay?
I think the cost is no more than it ever was. You will be able to earn charges in-game, just as you were able to earn Stones and Crystals. The wardrobe is nothing but convenience.
I’m more concerned about the loss of town clothing in its present form. Instead of giving us vendors who can sell us the same town clothing the NPCs wear, and allowing us to mix and match pieces, it seems that now, town clothing will be even more restricted, even less flexible (no mix and match) and Gem-store only.
I just want to be able to hot-swap my looks like in every other god-kittened game. Transmute two or three sets of armour and switch between ’em freely and as often as I like. Got mah fingers crossed for the next three days.
Also, THIS needs to be a thing. Seriously. It’s been a year. Any word on anything along these lines being in the works?
The dev’s need to earn some money to man.
I’m happy to pay for stones to swap my armor look instead of content lockouts and selling power in the cash shop, in the hopes that someone buys them.
Don’t forget that you only need to use ONE transmutation charge for each skin and you can use it infinitely.
I’d say that’s just enough freedom. A few goldsinks help a lot with the economy, too.
Agreed. The thread I linked to actually shows a way for the devs to make more money by selling us unlockable gear pages.

This isn’t the way it has been explained thus far. Would be great if you are right, but you don’t get infinite use after one transmutation charge. You have the skins unlocked automatically when you equip or salvage the item, then if you want to apply that skin later you must use a transmutation charge every time you wish to transmute it onto another piece of gear.
That said, as long as they give charges for EVERY instance that they currently give transmutation stones now, I’m good with it. If they nerf this then it will ruin the system in my opinion.
I will get plenty of charges from PvP rank and my stack of transmutation stones so I don’t really care about it right now. Charges will be much easier to get than transmutation crystals so it’s a good change.

Exactly. While I don’t know that every game has a means to switch out armor looks, many do. ..At little to no cost.
Secret World has a free-to-play option, and they don’t charge to switch out your appearance. ..In fact, no stats are tied to your clothing. You switch whatever you want, whenever you want. They sell clothing sets, and pieces in their cash shop just as GW does.
Star Trek Online also has free-to-play, and again, for nothing but a pittance of in game currency, you can customize your outfit. Again, they sell outfits in their cash shop. They also have tabs to store outfits that you’ve put together. They sell additional tabs, so you can have dozens of outfits that you’ve put together from the clothing you have.
The new wardrobe system would be perfect, if not for transmutation charges/stones. In fact, hell, they could even keep transmutation charges. Just give us a daily allowance of ten, or something like that.
As it stands right now, the current system (as well as the new system) discourage people from switching out their armor looks any more than once in a blue moon. People should be able to switch out their looks from zone to zone. Sub-eighty players should be able to keep the look of an outfit without having to switch every ten levels for armor upgrades.
Seriously. I know they need to make money. I’m not asking for something for nothing. …But the tax on switching out your armor-look in GW is one of the most costly in any MMO.
In a game advertised as having horizontal progression, cosmetics driven end-game, charges to change your looks do not belong. If ANet truly wishes to have a cosmetics end-game, they should not implement these charges. There are other ways to make money off of gems, as shown by the prevalence of musical instruments, infinite use gathering tools, and toys/outfits/etc. I would prefer they focus their efforts there.
Transmutation is fine, I wouldn’t expect them to do away with a source of income. We just need tabs, pages or some other system of creating looks through transmutation, saving them, and applying them freely when out of combat.
Manually changing out individual bits of gear with transmutation charges (with no means of saving the finished look) as as demonstrated in the wardrobe preview is not particularly appealing.
Actually I think this makes transmuting level 80 gear easier than before. Considering how rare Transmutation Crystals were, now charges can be earned from exploring towns and PvP reward tracks. If you don’t want to pay for charges then you can earn them by playing the game instead of relying on a RNG reward from a black chest or daily.
As long as there are still decent ways to earn stones/transmutation charges in game (which we already know there will be), I dont see any negative change compared to what we have now. If anything, we will have more freedom over how our characters look.

It’s not a negative change. The new wardrobe system is great. What sucks, is the high tax on the ability to actually change the look of armor. It sucked with the old system. It’s going to suck with the new system.
I’m not talking about the ability to change the look of an entire armor set once, or twice a week, on one character.
I’m talking about wanting to change the look of an entire set of armor three-five times a day. ..On more than one character. (Just as you can, in many other games)
There’s not really an efficient, or affordable means of getting enough transmutation stones to be able to do that. ..Certainly not for someone (such as myself) who only does PvE.
