If there are warp gates that enable people and things to be teleported from one point in Tyria, to the Mists, then back again to Tyria to another point, why aren’t there warp gates big enough for airships? Would it take tremendous amounts of energy to keep these “warp ports” working? How do warp gate technology work? One explanation I could think of why there aren’t warp ports in Tyria is because of the energy required is exponential in nature. It’s a strategic military advantage to have warp ports if you ask me, not just warp gates for the troops. Heck why not blink the whole ship while we’re at it. kittening awesome to see an air ship use mesmer and elementalist magic to do all sorts of offensive and evasive maneuvers. Version 2 of airships perhaps? Get a piece of Bloodstone, chuck it inside an airship, and there we go. Nukular powered airship.

Edit: Holy kitten, I just realized now. Scarlett used something similar to warp ports to transport the Marionette and the Breachmaker all over Tyria. How did she learn that kind and level of magic? Where does she get the magical energy to power that spell, or even technology?

Ok, so two things. Ask an Asura they’ll explain it over your head, but they’ll explain it.

The good guys aren’t the only ones with the ability to use portals. If they worked the way you’re describing they would not be an advantage because anyone could use them that way.

Beyond that, they aren’t interchangeable. One gate links to one other gate. It isn’t like you port into the mists then just randomly come out where you like. So in order to gain a strategic advantage you’d still need to get your giant gate to where you want your ships to show up. If you’re doing that anyway, why bother with the dual move? Why go to the Mists? Just wheel in your gate, turn it on and move your troops straight from where ever to the new location in one move.

Ultimately it’s far too unwieldy. That’s why Scarlet bypassed gates and just opened rifts from one place to another to move her armies at will.

Oh, the Mists part. That’s just a theory of mine, because portals “seem” to tear through reality, and in between reality is the Mists.

Yeah, you have to set up the end point as well, and if it’s big, it might take months. ^^;; But defensively, that’s like the Panama canal, a short cut for airships.

Well, I mean they do go to the mists. Fractals, WvW and PvP all take place in the mists and all have a portal going from them to Lion’s Arch.

How they got the end point there in the first place I couldn’t even begin to guess, but they did.

kitten , now that you’ve mentioned it, I suddenly remembered Mai Trin and her Aetherblades in EotM. They and their airships are now in there, and I vaguely remember Mai Trin saying that “Scarlett had a purpose for them being there” (aside from being a part of an achievement grind for players ofcourse j/k). I think they will have a part in the story of Heart of Thorns. kitten Scarlett, what were you thinking?

About the end points in the Fractals, WvW, etc. I remember there was this one Task in Brisban Wildlands called “Assist Ulta Metamagicals with their asura gate research”. They are fixing asura gates, and there were some clues in the dialogue that suggests that either they know before hand the “tuning coordinates” of a place, or they literally are trying to tune in to some sort of magical signal, sort of like tuning in to radio signals in real life. Since asura gates and waypoints are located and function best near leylines, maybe the nature of warp gates are closely connected to the leylines and aether/Mists itself. My guess is that they were trying to “tune in” to the strongest “aether signals” so to speak, and the signals where they point to came out to be the Heart of the Mists, and the Bordelands, and disastrously, Dessa discovered the coordinates to the Fractals.

The reason all those are in LA is probably the same reason Scarlet was drilling in LA.
