Waste to have too many character slots?

Sometimes. I only really play 2-3 toons regularly. I enjoy all my toons, the issue is I have this mindset that I must progress each one through the story in the right order, trying to complete everything as I go along. With another 6-7 toons, that becomes a chore and i lose motivation.
I also dont raid, pvp or wvw. So apart from my fractals char, all my toons are essentially set up for the same game mode.
They do at least all look frickin awesome in my eyes and that’s the most important thing, right?
Right..?

I think I have 9 now. One is reused weekly for key and trans charge farm. One is a gem armor mule. 3 are 80s I’ve leveled over the years, only one is active unless I need the crafting on the other two. I have a ranger I started back during Trait 2.0 but stalled out as unlocking the traits I wanted was a PITA during that time for a gold poor account. The others are currently empty.
RIP City of Heroes
I have… a few…. characters (see signature). I don’t play all of them all the time, obviously. I do switch between them, depending on what I’m doing, or which I feel like playing. some I’m still levelling.
I don’t see a single one of them as a waste
| 61 Asura | 5 Charr | 2 Norn | 1 Human | 1 Sylvari |
I play most of mine semi-regularly. Of course, I have a main, or two, or three. The others have specific purposes: parked at a JP for Silver Doubloons, parked at the Orr wood-farm, parked in the Terrace for Champ Bag opening, a key-runner, parked in the Grove for daily Home Instance gatherer, etc., etc. Some double as mules, as well. Sometimes, I change them up after a year or two. My old Home Instance character became someone I now play semi-regularly, and I moved a different JP-parked character to take over those duties.
I would never think a character was ‘wasted’, as I would delete it, and make a new one to be an Elite Specialist. For instance, I have a Ranger and a Druid; much easier, for me, than swapping between the two.
I have at least one level 80 of each class, then a few extras… I think 14-15 characters in total. I don’t see them as a waste, even though I almost exclusively play one character. All of the classes that have multiple characters, all have different builds. They are fun, and changing up the play style is always good. Besides…. Fashion Wars!
I have 20 char slots. One key running char, 4 mules, 3 being (slowly) leveled and 12 level 80s. I don’t consider any of those chars a waste. Each looks different and where I have 2 of the same profession I give them different weapons and skills. It’s hard to give them all playtime of course but I switch around between them.
ANet may give it to you.
Nothing wrong it’s being an altoholic. I personally have 32 characters at the moment, and due to some recent events that’s landed me some new skins I’ll likely be making numbers 33 and 34 later this week. True enough, many of my characters don’t see much attention often times, even though around 27 of them are level 80, but I still love elm and make more. The main reason I have so many is fashion wars lol, I take great pride in the look of my characters and finding a lore based name and backstory for each of them. Since I enjoy it so much I also help guiltiest design their own characters when asked, to let me have my fun and stop me from buying another slot. X3
As long as you enjoy it though, it’s certainly not a waste. It comes in handy to, as I can always switch characters when I need a new build, if I have to farm something (like winter berries recently) it goes a lot faster, and I have 7 mesmers all parked at different JP’s that I offer ports to every so often, so it’s all in good fun. ^^
I have 10 slots to cover a male and female from each race, as well as each class (thought I’ve got two mesmers).
Honestly I only play 1 often, unfortunately. I want to give them all attention but it’s hard to do that when one is much more advanced story, stats, and equipment-wise.
I tend to assign tasks to mine. I’m currently playing one that’s on the new map and it stays there. I also have ones on different other maps for particular farms, events or dailies. I prefer to switch in between chars and leave them on their maps rather than to port around on one char. I like it because it allows me to play different chars and professions each day, even if it’s not for very long, rather than staying on one char for days at a time.
ANet may give it to you.
If nothing else, you get some free dye unlocks (eventually) from older toons. While you are waiting for them to grow up, park them some place that will add to your income in a modest way: rich iron node, flax farm, or chest at the end of a JP. It all adds up.
Not really. I play some more than others usually but when I get bored with those I play with the less frequently played ones for a while.
Depends on the player, some people play with many alts. I’m a mainoholic, I only have 2 lvl 80s, a Necro (for PvE, WvW) and an Engi (for PvP). I have a mid-lvl banker character who also opens champ bags. And a char for weekly key run. I’d never buy more slots, lol.
I play 32 characters. After I get daily stuff done, I roll on random.org a random 1-32 number to decide who to play.
Many of them are specced differently or use different weapons which offers me a different experience. I don’t always do this, but I do it when I feel like a change.
If I was smart I would hustle all my neglected alts down to Draconis Mons and park them at the end of the JP. A guildie has 10 toons doing that, and buys packets or something with the resulting unbound magic, and says he’s making 50-70g a week that way alone. But I CBA ;-)
I play one
I have one for bank donkey.
now I have 4 chars. Only reason 2 exist if for legendry pvp backpack that forces me to play other classes. if it wasn’t for that, my little class pie chart in pvp panel would have REMAINED a pure unblemished GOLD beacon of Warrior beauty for a fifth year.
now I have to look at ugly green and red cracks in it…
I have just a couple I use for game mechanics stuff — my daredevil main for story/RP, and one of my reapers for achieves and helping other players with things. Oh, and my fractals geared chronomancer, and an asura mesmer who can get to most all the JPs. But overall I have around 20 level 80’s, multiples of most professions, made for looks or for RP. Some of my RP characters haven’t seen RP action in a long time as my guild has mostly poofed from the game, but they still exist as characters and can cameo very easily.
Sometimes I cycle through flax or other farms on them, but even if they’re all parked at the farm it takes something like an hour to do a full rotation and that gets tedious. So it’s the clarion call of RP that gives many of them their time in the sun.
Since I have chronic altitis, I decided to use different builds on professions I have more than one of. This allows me to save on bag space (gear only for the active build), and allows me to play different characters when I’m in the mood to play a particular way. I also play different characters in different content. I don’t, for instance, use the same character I do boss meta trains with to roam in WvW.
I have 10 character slots – 9 used for permanent characters and 1 used for random alts as and when I feel like making them.
Apart from my main character I tend to go through phases where I’ll focus on 1-3 of them. So in any given week (or month) I might have only logged into a couple, but if you look at each one’s total playtime relative to their age it’s about equal.
But even if I’m not playing them right now I like having them there because then I’ve got the option. I’ve got 1 of each profession (and 1-2 of each race) so I can play whichever I feel like. And if I want a different combination (like a charr female engineer) I’ve got that 10th slot, combined with enough scrolls/tomes of XP to get them to whatever level I need them at.
“Life’s a journey, not a destination.”
I have all professions at level 80, and 1 spare character slot I use if I can be bothered to do a key run. It will get used on either a new profession or playable race, preferable both.
I’ve sank time into most of them, 6 are in full ascended and 7 have 100% map. Some are situationally geared though, necromancer is geared for PvX, Mesmer for Fractals, thief for general dungeoneering and farming, etc. Those three I play mainly though.
Sometimes. I only really play 2-3 toons regularly. I enjoy all my toons, the issue is I have this mindset that I must progress each one through the story in the right order, trying to complete everything as I go along. With another 6-7 toons, that becomes a chore and i lose motivation.

Yes, an excellent site it is, although because I play on medium settings I can’t always do justice to my shots. Plus I’m too lazy…
How many characters do you have and do you play all of them on a regular basis?
Is it a waste to not play them?I got 20+ character slots myself but only play 4 to 5 of them on a regular basis…feels wasted seeing all my other characters sitting around in the slots and not having much play time XD
I have 5 I play 3 most often but I switch out when I want a change. They are all pre-expansion classes too not really impressed with the new class I enjoy alternative builds I was hoping to see more than 1 each class but I guess they are still adding to them.
Playing my favorite three is fun I like the thief and the ranger and engineer. Engi is my main but I play a guardian healer and a condi heavy necromancer which is always fun love runes and signets.
Lol i hesr you. I have necro for wvw, and some farming, and guardian staff in wvw…. Warrior is for crafting, mesmer is for crafting… Yep thats it for me. Im just tooning out another charr guardian with sweet armor and bifrost so he can be my main come exp…

Some people think it’s a waste. Some people don’t. Some people use all their characters made. Some people don’t use all their characters made…
What’s the purpose of the thread and how do you help the game move forward with this subjective info?
221 hours over 1,581 days of bank space/hot pve/lion’s arch afk and some wvw.
(edited by Swagger.1459)
I have 9, one of each class, and they all have a certain use, though I admit my ranger and warrior don’t see much action. The class I have the most hours on Guardian so thus considered “main” with 2k hours, though I have played 6k hours total.
I don’t think it’s a waste of course. I’ve always liked to check out all the available options and reach at least some degree of understanding on it. Otherwise, the game feels incomplete without it.
But even if you don’t, if you do anything that isn’t solo content then it helps to be knowledgeable towards classes other people will use so you can properly interact with them and do combos and such. This is especially true if you do WvW or PvP.
There’s also achievements associated with individual classes as well, including maxing out the respective elite specs and a specialization collection.
As for repeats of the same class, I’ve never seen a need for it, but some people dislike having to swap weapons/builds, and thus this can help to have superspecalized characters too. Being able to provide any role to a group is naturally going to increase your value. It also helps soften the effects of any nerf hammers, because you can switch to other options while stuff gets “fixed”
And of course, there’s also different race/gender combos that look and sound different.
Finally, some people actually just like leveling.
I think the game plays completely differently based on the above choices so I don’t think it’s a waste.
for there you have been and there you will long to return.

I have 1 main, 3 level 80 ascended alts that I play actively, 1 low level alt that I’m currently working on, and 2 bank alts.
I’ll endeavour to have one of each profession and one of each race/gender, with two bank alts. So I’m planning to have at the very least 11 toons.
Question: How many character slots do you have before you need to start scrolling for them on the character selection screen? :o
- Sun Tzu, Art of War
I have at least one of each profession. I think I have 2 of Warrior, I like to “hack N slash”
Only one is at 100% map completion and PS completion. Slowly working all the others thru map completion at the pace I feel like, not rushing anything as I only play because it’s fun for me.
I have none that have finished LW2, HoT, LW3. Not rushing that either.
I play almost every day but still have loads of things to do because I don’t rush thru anything at all. At times my chars have SOS (shiny object syndrome) so I just move thru the game how I feel like.
(edited by PyrateSilly.4710)
I enjoy playing with different weapons, styles and build templates. I like to go against the grain with many just to try things out for myself rather than play the defined meta. I have a mixture of races and gender in each defined profession with a lot more emphasis on thief as my favorite profession.
I found when I wanted o switch up a given thief build it was a pain to retrait and reaquire all the given gear , pulling it from my locker or having to sort through inventory to find it. Starting a new one and burning off all the tomes is just that much easier
(edited by babazhook.6805)
I have 15 characters: all 3 armor classes for the 5 races. I never understood the concept of mains vs alts (well, things like keyrunners I guess) but while some I use everywhere in PVE some are less-than-ideal (like the charr guardian I created early on …. talk about a character that looks slow).
I have 27 characters (3 of each profession) and I still want more. Only 1 isn’t level 80.
To make things fair to my characters I cycle them and log into the last character in my list for dailies, if I log in early enough they get taken to Tequatl . After that I do my dailies on that character or pick someone that can do my dailies easier.
My guildies have tasked me with mapping on all my characters before I can make more and I’m keeping my word.
Each of my characters run something different, some are sandboxes that are waiting for a build idea. I like different play styles. My thieves show the most variation: condi, DPS and a weird clerics support one that I’m still workshopping.
Others are cosplay characters (I’m an ingame cosplayer) which I try to embody that character they’re based on in everything they do (and if you’re on NA you might have seen me running around in LA or DReach on these cosplayers because I try to see if anyone recognizes the cosplay and I go totally into character if they do)
There are practical reasons for many characters, I have a friend that has 18 Mesmers and she keeps them stationed at different jumping puzzles for dailies.
I love all of my characters because they make me happy? and I’ve grown attached to all of them.
I have literally 70 characters. Maxed out till the limit.
I really love playing as my other characters, I try to keep changing them Daily but of course I do have my "main".
I had an idea of creating my own "god-humanoid characters", so I design them for their weapons, outfit/armor to match them as much as possible.
Dwayna uses her Winged longbow along with her outfit and her backpack.
Grenth uses his daggers, "Tear of Grenth", along with his backpack.
And the list go on..
Dwayna, Grenth, Balthazar, Lyssa, Kormir, Melandru, Abaddon, Menzies, Dhuum are my god insprired characters.
I have three Asuran characters and three Charr characters, main reason to represent their cutural storyline and armorweight aswell.
Huge fan of the Inquest so I am going to copy all the Inquest’s NPCs armor into mine along with their weapons.
Norn and Sylvari characters are my most favorite, I think I got 50/50 here.
Almost all my Sylvari characters are based on the Nightmare Court, as I copy the NPC style to look alike.
I’ve got pictures if anyone is interested of any of my characters look like when I copy the NPCs.
Humans are my absolutely favorite race, 70% are human characters,
Here I simply try to copy any cool NPCs I like into my own such as,
Seraph soldiers, White Mantle fanatics, Shining Blade guards, Ascalonian soldiers, Pirates and many other.
I also try to get all weightarmor pieces for the human characters as I find the armor fit them best.
Main reason I have so many characters is I guess that I like to change to a different character, armorstyle and different weapon gameplay.
It’s also fun to re-visit old places in Tyria along to re-play storylines and dungeons and also random Events worldwide!
I will keep going if ANet decide to add more slots in our upcoming expansion,
It’s probably a waste, but it’s a fun waste.
I keep mine around for various combat styles and appearances, rotating out to a new one each day, unless I have something specific I’m working on.

I have 26 character slots on my main account, and 6 + 6 + 6 + 5 on my other accounts.
So yeah, I’ll get to max eventually on my main account. Not that I’ll ever have time to play them all, but I enjoy creating and leveling characters.
12 characters here, 8 of which are asura. I have 2~3 workhorse characters that get things done (dailies, gathering, fractals, dungeons, etc), the rest are mainly used for RP purposes. I currently do not have any plans for more characters, but I guess we’ll see later.

Your skin will wrinkle and your youth will fade, but your soul is endless.
i like to make concepts, ether from already existing characters or self made.
it’s problematic with the limited options in GW2 but the ones who do work are fun to work with.
i made the queen of blades a few day’s ago, apart for not being able to dye the back slot and not having the right hair style it came out quite good.
I have 27 character slots. Of those slots, 15 are used. Of those 15 I have 13 Asura and 2 Humans.
Of those 15, I have 4 I consider my “main characters” in that they’re fully Ascended so they’re prepped for just about any form of PvE content though most of what I do is open world PvE as I don’t have anyone to do more organized group content like dungeons, fractals, and raids with.
Right now I’m trying to get 100% map completion for core Tyria, HoT, and LWS3 maps with my second Human character since my first Human character is the only one with that honor. I’ll keep plugging away at it until I either get it done or get burned out and decide to take a break.
Once my 4 main characters get 100% core Tyria, HoT, and LWS3 map completion I’ll make another one of my characters fully Ascended and repeat the process until they’re all Ascended and have 100% map completion.
Then after that I’ll probably make another character. Probably another Asura or Human. Depends on where the story I have for them goes whether or not another Asura or Human is needed. :o
Why have multiples of the same class? I get people who did it in the past to have multiple builds, but now switching builds is fairly trivial.

different characters/concepts, both in GW1 and GW2 plenty of ppl make multiple characters of the same profession.
Why have multiples of the same class? I get people who did it in the past to have multiple builds, but now switching builds is fairly trivial.
A couple of reasons. One is for different playstyles and for different looks (which is important in a cosmetic based game). I have a Norn necro and a sylvari necro. One is a reaper and the other is a minion master. They look completely different and I get to choose a different armor set for each. A second reason is animations. I have a Norn warrior and a Charr warrior. imo the Charr warrior’s animations are superior and the Norn is now parked at a flax farm.
ANet may give it to you.

Ok, so it’s basically all about the cosmetics? This isn’t a criticism, I just wanted to be sure I was clear on the motivations for doing it. I am, personally, more interested in the mechanics of a class than I am in the cosmetics so I can understand why this motivation for multiple characters of the same class escaped me. I just wasn’t sure if I was missing out on something I might have otherwise wished I had known about.
i’m a pvp and i have loooads of character slots, it doesn’t feel like a waste i play most of them on my game night each week
it helps not having to switch specs,
warrior for example i have a GS toon, a shout bunker, a hammer guy and a dual axe zerker, rather than having to go through the chore of switching specs, runes and sigils i simply switch char!
plus it means you can have a look that fits, thief for example my p/p thief looks rather piratey with big boots and a pirate hat, while my most sneaky thief looks like an assassin
I have four mules (non-playing storage locations). I play the other thirteen characters each at least once or twice a week. It’s rare that I don’t get through all thirteen in a week.
I’m story-oriented and goal-oriented, though. Many of the characters were created because I want to play through all of the (original) storyline missions. I’m only “counting” it as played if I played it on my own character.
I also do dailies regularly, and so I need characters all over Tyria pretty regularly.
Why have multiples of the same class? I get people who did it in the past to have multiple builds, but now switching builds is fairly trivial.
Still a matter of convenience as swapping gear or traits repeatedly can lead to errors at the worst time.

For me (and I suspect many others) cosmetics is a big part. I could have alternate gear and use other skills on one if it weren’t for that. Also, I like leveling and exploring maps, so new chars allows this.

Ayup. Until we get build templates and the like, it tends to be easier to have a character on hand with all the necessary gear and build already equipped.
(…I’ll actually get that gear someday. Still working on some full ascended kiddos.)

I love alts.
I love what they bring to the table, the ability to personalize each one,.
There was a time when I had a group of asura that I PVP’d with, had each profession, each had a separate job or function.
That developed into having one of each profession for each race.
With the exception of Charr (I only have 4 of them), I have a character for almost every need.
Each is set up slightly different, with a different role, its own trinkets, its own armor.
I did this because I completely detest moving trinkets and armor around, total waste of time.
I have 2 characters that I raid with, 4 characters that I fractal with.
All the others work through living stories.
So for me, its worth it.

Wow, I just checked out that site… I see there are some fineeee women that play GW2.
As for the thread: You can NEVER have too many characters!
One.
Sometimes I create an alt to dabble in it for pvp but otherwise and currently I only have one character.
