I think having waypoints cost karma instead of coin would be a much better idea.

First, it’d be a (much needed) karma sink. Everyone has an overabundance of karma with nothing to really expend it with. (Especially since they keep introducing new Ascended gear with new currencies.)

Second, it’d reduce the actual cost of dying back down to a reasonable 1.36 silver (from an absurd 3 silver or more depending on where the nearest open waypoint is.)

The Orrian Jewelry box was introduced as a potential karma sink, but the Minis are more common than Lodestones… And you can’t even sell/trade the minis. So most people aren’t finding it worthwhile.

Finally, it makes sense from a gameplay perspective:
What’s the most common reason to want to waypoint? If you want to quickly get to an event.

So you want to replace a much needed gold sink (that has a DIRECT effect on controlling in game inflation) to a “much needed” karma sink that has no effect on anything? A currency that has limited personal value does not need a sink, except perhaps that it becomes difficult to introduce new karma items for fear players will be able to acquire (those items) instantly. THAT, however, is better solved by just putting in a karma cap and items such as the jewel boxes. Making karma account bound would also be a great idea for more karma uses.

Arguably, how is it a “much needed” gold sink? Don’t we already have plenty?

Repair costs, cost to list on TP, etc?

On the other hand, we have no karma sinks.

Because it is one of the few gold sinks that EVERY player must use (that and repair,)everything else is optional…that is why it is much needed. Well, ok – you could walk I guess…

Karma does need a sink but not at the expense of gold sinks. The waypoint costs are pretty affordable as it is. Completing 2 or 3 events and selling off junk will get you back 3 silver easily. If you are dying or waypoint hopping so often that you can’t even do that then it’s not the cost that is a problem.

I’d expect you to be in the minority. Most players seem to have an overabundance.

Obviously a matter of opinion, since you don’t speak for “most players”. I feel the current cost to waypoint is fine the way it is. It’s a noticeable sink, but definitely not game-breaking.

I don’t think a gold sink can be switched out for a karma sink, simply because karma is not an inter-player currency. There is no exchange of karma between players – everything we use karma for is technically a sink. But because gold changes hands between players, most of it remains being circled in the game economy. Karma is not an issue, because there is no circulation.
I understand what you’re trying to get at; I’d rather not spend coins on WP either, but from the X-Sink perspective, the two currencies are not equivalent at all, and do not hold the same position in the economy.

I think the current costs of WP’s are too high. I don’t have a lot of coin, and I didn’t get in on any of the exploits or whatever they were that made the early players rich in game.

I find having to spend 10s + to WP around a zone to look for herbs to be too high.

It discourages me from going places and doing stuff I want to do because it’s too expensive.

What if there was an option? Maybe to spend karma or coin. Or a combo of both, lower WP cost but add a little karma to the price. Instead of something being 3s to WP to, it could be 1s and 1k karma or something.

I don’t know. Some players can afford to WP all over the place. Some can’t.

I also don’t have a lot of karma built up, I spend all mine.

Maybe I’m just playing the game wrong because I have no extra coin and no extra karma like so many other players do.

Fortunately, waypoints are a convenience for players that wish to get to a location quickly, rather than a requirement to get to that location at all.

Though, I wouldn’t mind if they put up a 7/day or 30/day waypoint ticket up on the gem shop.

Or an actual permanent discount on WP costs for JP achievements instead of -20% on waypoints for 24 hours for what, 2k influence?…

No, EVERYONE does NOT have a overabundance of karma. Maybe YOU do, but you dont speak for everyone else. How about players that are building up karma for upgrading to the level 80 karma gear? Or those who’re building up karma for their legendary weap after completing 100% world exploration? Your suggestion would make it that much harder for folks like that to build up the karma to get that gear.

I haven’t even played that much and if I were to drink all the Karma I had, I’d have around 2mil.

That’s after blowing half a mil for clovers and generally wasting it freely.

Karma is ridiculously easy to get. The vast majority of people do not need karma/would not need to grind to get it. In one evening of WvW my Thief had an extra 60,000 more Karma. Methinks someone needs to stop trying to speak for everyone saying they need Karma just because you have mysterious trouble getting it.

This doesn’t need to happen. Lack of karma for some players aside, this is just a way for players to marginalize the cost of waypointing which is already at perfectly fine levels. Development time is best spent finding real uses for karma.

No thanks.

Give me other reasons to use karma, not that i have a “over abundance” but i’d like more options to use it… Say like converting it into guild influence.

Open up the TP. Look over the column to the left. That is why we need gold sinks. Six months ago the most expensive item on the TP was 100g, now that same item is somewhere in the realm of 2500g.

Dragonbrand – Reforged Vanguard [ReVa]
Kyxha 80 Ranger, Sokar 80 Necro
Niobe 80 Guardian, Symbaoe 45 Ele

Anyone WPing around enough for it to hurt their income is just not thinking.

I can see that they made Karma insanely easy to get by adding it to just about everything you can do. It needs uses, but not “sinks” due to previously mentioned reasons. I would be all for being able to buy a reduced WP booster with it. I mean it is “karma” and I’m supposed to get it for being all helpful and stuff, you’d think the locals would be nice and cut me deal. Guild Influence boosts would be good to for the same reasoning.
