Reason I ask is because several months ago, I took a break from gw2 (not asking for sympathies). It wasn’t because of any one thing, I just didn’t feel like I had anything left to accomplish except achievements which were only the pvp/wvw ones. So, in that time I played some other games to pass the time and observed what I liked and didn’t like about them (I’ll leave them un-named as to not deter the point).

Strangely enough I’ve come back here as a casual player for the time, mostly because I’ve got so much done on my account that I really didn’t wana quit just yet. One thing I really liked about the other games was the very simple idea of travel. The game felt far bigger having to actually go to a destination rather than have an ungodly amount of teleports at my disposal.

So I ask others, not to remove waypoints as I believe that would hurt far more than help, but what would it be like if waypoints were limited to actual outposts rather than scattered around as they are now?

There are contested waypoints in higher level zones that make this concept ideal but there are countless waypoints in some strange locations that just seem plopped there for convenience which imo is a little too convenient even if I had to of gone there to obtain that wp first. Thoughts?

Against. I find the waypoints to be really convenient (and if i want to just run around the map, i can always do so, waypoints in no way prevent me from doing it). Actually, i’d rather see Anet use more waypoints in new maps, not less, and remove the contestability of some in old high level zones (Orr, i am looking at you).

an ungodly amount of teleports at my disposal

amount

a mount

I knew it was a “mount” thread!

;)

On topic: against. I like that the game lets me play the game instead of wasting time on traveling. I’m even often not going to SW because of the “dedication” it requires.

20 level 80s and counting.

As a grown up, I have limited time to spend on recreational activities. The large amount of waypoints allows me to skip the boring parts and get right to the action on the (frequent) days where I’ve got only a fraction of an hour to play.

Yeah, this is pretty much my feelings. I mean, some days I’m off and can go for a walk across all of Blazeridge Steppes seeking iron ore. And some days I just want to pop from Ascalon to Southsun Cove to Orr and cut down every tree I see when I drop in.

It seems you have forgotten to ask for mounts ..

EVERY MMO is awesome until it is released then its unfinished. A month after release it just sucks.
Best MMOs are the ones that never make it. Therefore Stargate Online wins.

Totally against.

I love the travel system – world feels huge. If you don’t want to use waypoints, nobody is forcing you to. You can run all the way from dry top to ascalon.

But other people like waypoints. Don’t mess with them.

Also,

So I ask others, not to remove waypoints as I believe that would hurt far more than help, but what would it be like if waypoints were limited to actual outposts rather than scattered around as they are now?

This is super confusing. Don’t take them away, just make them permanently contested?

(to those who think otherwise) First off, no I strongly do not want mounts. All they would do is make the towns obnoxious and the zones even smaller and less relevant. I’ve played games with mounts and it gave me the same issues where I just ran past everything to get to a spot that was rewarding or worth my time. Why make miles of nothing?

Im not against the wp system, I just think they went overboard with the amount that some zones carry. I have no interest in walking 10 minutes to my destination but event farming or champ train (idk, is that still a thing?), it doesn’t really feel like effort. Look at the timer and just port across the world in the blink of an eye and afk till the boss/event starts.

There is more to this topic as far as making that travel relevant by some means (rewards, exciting encounter) and looking into how event chains are started so people aren’t overwhelmed by the limited time and forced to port all over to make them. I’m just wondering what all the effort into the maps was for when it seems like only a very small fraction of it is ever used. Are there plans to revive some of the dead zones?

Or you could… I dunno…maybe switch off the option that displays them on the map (think we can do that) and just not use em? It’s completely your choice to do so or not to do so.

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

I wish it was like gw1. There are only waypoints in outposts but there are various resurrection points. That way you have to journey to places but if you die you don’t have to restart your progress as there will likely be a resurrection point nearby.
It won’t happen but I think that system was best.

Many years ago when I played WoW (I know) I used to love to have to get a gryphon across the map. It felt so adventurous and vast. I mean its no where near as convenient as WPs but I like the feel it had.

I think the best solution is to have a mix of possibilities in different zones. I.E some zones with many WPs, some with only one or two (see SW), some with contested (Orr) etc. etc. I think its a format Anet have semi-adopted and I think they should stick with it

I have no interest in having to run even more than I already do. Against.

i aggree less waypoints are helpful for a feeling of size in the game (and size matters) but we cant change the old areas, the new maps however have a nice balance of waypoints at only strategic locations

I think the lack of waypoints in Silverwastes is complimented by the other fast-travel system which needs to have effort kept going in order to have them remain open/available. This works better than the abundance of waypoints in some areas.

On the other hand, I think Gendarran Fields has a good balance of waypoints so . . . some areas do the balance better than others. The earlier zones have a pretty high density of waypoints but I’m okay with that – the idea being it’s more important to have a lot of “respawn areas” nearby for lower levels than it is for higher levels.

Oh, I don’t miss the GW1 method. Probably because by the time they reached Nightfall there was an ample amount of effort given to just getting around the Death Penalty debuff. And after that it became somewhat of a speedbump and less important – you just carried around Powerstones or candy canes.

Remember, all those WP’s that you think are so casually scattered about aren’t really scattered about, but are in fact in close proximity to a Leyline Hub, whether large or small…think about that and the possibilities for a moment.

Some waypoints are rather redundant (the top left of snowden drifts comes to mind with 3 right in the same corner).

Follow the darkness into the depths, it’s more fun than the light can provide.
