Hi,
I briefly skimmed the article about the economy, magic find, and ascended weapons from Lindsay Murdock and John Smith.

From it, I gather that there are only two ways to obtain ascended items: Drops from areas that drop ascended items(fractals), or crafting.

So if someone doesnt craft and doesnt run fractals, they cannot obtain this gear? Are these really the only places you can earn them?

I guess we need to now level up one of the three crafting disciplines, or hop in fractals.

Lame.

Champ loot will drop ascended items so it is my guess that there is a small chance for weapons aswel.

I honestly think this is the last straw for me, at least for a while.
Want rings? Run fractals, or trade in laurels.
Want accessories? Trade in commendations or laurels + 50 ectos(equivalent of at least 10 gold in ecto)
Want weapons? Must have a weapon crafter to 500, enough time gated materials, and ectos. Or go run fractals.

So the non fractal runner, the non crafter, the pure WvW’er, the pure dungeon runner,…miss out on quite a lot of opportunity and mats.

Ive really had it with this game.

What content are you unable to accomplish without this as yet unavailable weapon?

I keep hearing all this whining about gating you off from max level gear but what exactly are you going to be able to do with it that you arnt able to do now? Kill Lupi in 12 seconds instead of 15? Its just another thing for casuals to get in a huff about

How about if Anet had stuck to their manifesto and actually kept horizontal progression. It literally has nothing to do with being “casual” or “hardcore” when it breaks from their original stated intent.

I have made this suggestion in a few post already but maybe Anet could keep the new ascended gear a pvE thing only and upon entering WvW the gear would be scaled down to exotic stats. I know that lots of wvwers current builds are based on using ascended trinkets so that would remain the same.

I’ve gotten almost as many exotics during Clockwork Chaos as I’ve gotten for the rest of the game, about 6. Let’s say Ascended drops with the frequency currently exhibited by exotics. I doubt it, you probably have the usual chance to get exotic or Ascended, and if that comes up, a small chance to get Ascended. But let’s say they do drop that quickly. Based on Exotic drops, the chance you’re going to get an Ascended weapon with the stats you want is vanishingly small — assuming I’m reading “you will get an Ascended Weapon chest that allows you to choose which weapon type you want from within a stat combo.” correctly. That is, get an Ascended Shaman’s chest and choose any Shaman stat weapon you want.

I expect crafting will be the only reliable way to get one with the stats you want.

Not just fractals? I have never gotten anything ascended that wasnt in fractals or WvW

After the update ascended items will drop in said locations. Right now they do not.

Yeah we can get these drops anywhere just like precursors guys

Ascended items will drop in different areas in the game not just fractals…

This is good but the drop chance is a wee bit better than a precursor(by a 1/1000000 of a percent), so don’t hold your breath…

Basically, if you want a ascended weapon before Christmas get crafting to 500…

It really has nothing to do about huffs or casuals for that matter. The problem is vertical progression. And, everything you need to know about VP can be found in the words that make up the concept: Vertical, the power level of the game increases; Progression, it continually increases over time.

And, VP can be described by an integer series: 1,2,3,4,5,…n where each number represents a new tier of ever more powerful gear. Upon inspection we can see that participating (grinding) in the process is mandatory, not optional. It makes no difference whatsoever whether the difference between 1 & 2 is material. Vertical progression does not progress by stopping. It is self evident that eventually you will not be able to play the game if you are not grinding it out on the assigned treadmills.

And what about the treadmills? Ever wonder why they call it a gear treadmill? Here’s why: everyone is at power X and new gear with more power drops, let’s call it power level Y. Everyone jumps on the treadmill. When they get off everyone’s at power level Y. Meanwhile, the environment has attained power level Y as well. Before and after the treadmill ride there is no relative difference between player and player (if they rode the treadmill and they really had no choice) or player and environment. In reality they have gone nowhere; they’ve just been exercised on a non-optional treadmill.

That’s all well and good for hamsters, but players in 2013 are realizing more and more that the emperor of treadmills has no clothes. We want more from our gaming than a mandatory treadmill ride. Vertical progression is an old answer to the question of making an engaging MMO. We’re ready for a new kind of MMO.

Nothing. Thats not the point. I want BiS gear. I currently have it. I enjoy the game. I don’t want to spend more time, energy, and resources getting the next tier piece. Because I already have it.

I misread. Apologies.

Still, probably a similar percentage as pre cursors. I can bet a paycheck that they will not make ascended chests drop as often as rares or even exotics. That would nearly make the crafting bit of all of this obsolete, since you can get a fair amount of rares or even exotics in a day of farming.

@Raine: I am OK with verticle progression. In other games. Not GW2. I bought GW2 and was hyped because finally a game without VP. But now since its hear, in whatever form people call it, however much its downplayed as VP, it is still a form of it…it has poisoned the game. My game that I was so hyped for.

So, its back to the drawing board for me. Like I said, Im OK with VP as long as the developer says that this type of gear progression will be in the game and not walk the fine line as Arenanet did, with nearly everything in their manifesto, blogs, interviews, etc.

Edit: Id like to also point out… Yes, we were aware all of this was coming. We were aware that ascended armor and weapons were coming ever since November-December. Its no surprise and I am not kitten because of that. It is the manner in which this game is handling rewards, gear, skins and gear progression that has me turned off.
