I greatly disagree with the sentiment in this thread. My wife and I had a blast this weekend exploring the jungle.

The experience required for the early, “required” masteries is minimal. And there is SO much to explore and do. The verticality and and layering makes getting from point A to point B an interesting and exciting experience as you attempt to figure out how to get there.

Saturday night we spent 30 minutes “lost” (more like exploring) in a cave in the 3rd map in which I often looked at the map and can confirm the entire 30 minutes took place in a football shaped area roughly 3% of the total area of the zone. It was awesome.

One thing I think more people need to do is to move on to the other maps once they have explored a fairly large chunk of Verdant Brink. The other maps are quite different and do not really require more than basic gliding and mushroom jumping. In fact I believe you can map it all the way to the 4th map without ever even needing gliding (though I haven’t tested this).

From what I’ve seen so far you can, each map has different ground paths to move around the jungle, it’s a bit harder, but entirely doable. And my experience has been the same as yours. I don’t feel mad when I am lost in HoT as there is usually a hero point, event, or something around for me to do. And the hero points go from nearly impossible to solo, to easy if you get another person to help you. I had a guild ie who started playing, hated it because he couldn’t figure out what to do or where to go. So I jumped in and showed him around and how to navigate the jungle and ways to get masteries and he’s having a blast now, and he’s just in verdant brink. I’ve done this with randoms too. It’s awesome feeling like you’re actually helping people rather than just sorta being there. I’ve made a lot of new friends this weekend and grew a lot closer to my guild mates.

And sure, I could’ve run dungeons and used the LFG tool, but that’s an entirely different experience than struggling with an open world encounter, then having 2-3 people swoop in to back you up.

A knight in shining armor is a man who never had his metal truly tested.

Nothing in GW2 has been been gated so specifically till now.

So you can kill Zhaitan on your level 1? Better yet can you skip your entire story and just kill him OR is it “gated” behind your personal story?

No, no, no that is way to gated…..you kill Zhaitan when you create your character

Scratch that, you kill Zhaitan when you download the game

You are seriously missing the point here, and you seem to totally bypass Soulstitch reason …..by you joining a friends group you are not completing your personal story, so at level 1 you can not complete your story simply by porting over to arah and getting carried by your Friends.

To me, this xpac felt more like a small DLC with huge gated walls. The amount of event grinding to get masteries is a bit much. If I actually had to get HP in the world for elite spec, I just wouldn’t have an elite spec. The fact that I can’t even complete the story without hours and hours of grinding masteries that really don’t change the game at all once you have glider/bouncing shrooms/uplift just makes me not care about the story as well.

All in all, this xpac wasn’t worth more than maybe 20 bucks. They have put in better content in free patches than they have in this xpac imo.

I think you’re missing the point, and deliberately avoiding the the problem. If I wanted, I could do the entire personal story, at level 80, from beginning to end.

In HoT, you’re 80, and to do the story you need to do every single event you come across, as well as the story . It’s not a choice.

No, SelenaDread, briggah is missing the point, I’m sorry. He argues against something nobody asked for, he exaggerates the issues players have with HoT’s gating mechanics so much that he’s right again. Instead you can just try to stomach that a lot of players vent their frustration about having to do time consuming things they don’t really want to do in order to continue doing what they would like.

If you like to grind, that’s fine. Since the first Guild Wars and it’s expansions right through three years of Guild Wars 2 there has been grind and farming and it has been optional so people who like grind and people who dislike it got along just fine. With HoT that’s a thing of the past and whether this irks you or not, this is an issue that quite a few players dislike.

Clearly someone stated that nothing has been gated in GW2 yet there is level requirement for progress in your own personal story. He is not exaggerating, he is simply stating a fact.

The people who are playing the new expansion are all 80, and Anet is not going to raise the level cap, so you place progression attached to your mastery level. Basically you start at level 1 without removing the progression you acquire for the 80 levels…So Briggah was not missing the point at all.
