Guild Wars 1 hasn’t had a major update in years and people still play it. UO hasn’t had an update in a decade and people still play it.

Vayne? Fact check yourself . . .

Ultima Online got an expansion in ’08 (Stygian Abyss) and a “booster pack” in ’10 (High Seas).

Still . . . most people I know still prefer to . . . um . . . think about playing emulated 1999 versions.

Okay sorry, Ultima Online hasn’t had an expansion in 6 years and no one plays it. I didn’t look it up. However, the basis of what I said remains true whether the specifics do or not. Changing the numbers doesn’t change the reality of what I’m saying.

For all practical purposes, it’s hard to imagine no one playing this game in ten years, unless NcSoft shuts down the servers.

Unless Anet turn this game into a unplayable mess (which has a high possibility to happen) and ascend to the worst gaming company in the world (which is currently hold by EA)

Guild Wars 2 has had about half an expansion’s worth of stuff IMO.

What would I expect to see in a full expansion?

1. Quest line with at least ten hours of play through time
2. At least 4 new maps
3. QoL and UI improvements
4. Several new dungeons
5. Class skill expansions
6. Either a new class or new race
7. Expanded crafting

A quick survey shows that 1 passes easily if we include content that is gone, but we’ll have to wait until next year before it qualifies for permanent content.

We are half way there for 2, and an acceptable way through for 3.

For dungeons we have FotM, which some might argue is enough for the dungeon component of an expansion. I probably wouldn’t.

For 5 we have only really seen one new heal skill and one new elite skill.

6 is not there

7 is about 3/4 of the way wrt 500 crafting. And then there are a few more ingredients and stats that have also become available.

I don’t know if my expectations of what an expansion should contain are off, but I think that the piecemeal nature of delivery hides the fact that we have got a fair percentage of the way to an expansion for free. to be honest, I have no idea how my list compares to a WoW expansion, so if someone wants to tell me how my expectations stack up let me know.

I agree with this in scope. Unfortunately the content is unrelated and fails to follow a common theme. So it feels disjointed when considered as a whole.

Part of me thinks that someone in ANet was thinking “hey, wanna see something funny? Watch this…”

That’s not what I really said either. People still play it, after all . . . they worked really hard to keep that castle full of cool decorative loot! If they stop playing, all of that goes away . . .

Enter the insidious and necessary “housing decay” system, where a house needs to be renewed so often or it starts decaying. When it fully decays, all items in it drop on the ground and can be picked up by anyone. More often than not? They just rot and are gone forever.

I said most of the people I know who played tend to still play other versions and offerings of the game. Yet enough people were still playing in 2010 for them to offer up an expansion of some sort.

For all practical purposes, it’s hard to imagine no one playing this game in ten years, unless NcSoft shuts down the servers.

Telling the future is hard and if I could do it with any accuracy I’d be playing the stock market.

I also couldn’t possibly have any less interest in WoW and that date means nothing to me.

BUT ..aside from that, the general point holds true: Anet does not have an unlimited amount of time before more people (like me) find a better alternative and just stop caring about this. They really do need to start bringing their A-game again and give us reasons to still care and invest our time/money.

Speaking again for people (like myself), I feel kind of guilty for spending so much of this year “shopping around” for other games to replace this with. I would not say I’ve succeeded fully (though Archeage has pulled me away quite a lot and will for the foreseeable future. I see EQN as a bigger threat down the road).

If Anet could be bothered to give us more meaningful things to do, more ways to feel invested Tyria, I’d have little reason to even care what the competition has to offer. But if that competition delivers content and activities that Anet refuses to (or still hasn’t after years) ..one kind of has to take notice of that.

Be it WoW, AA, EQN, or anything else ..the “job” of the company is to give customers what they want, and to do it effectively enough as to render competitors moot. Competitors meeting the demands of your customers, while you fail to do so, ..is good for the competitors. Your own business not so much.

A lot of customers are pretty fickle anyway and there’s not much to be done about that, but when you even have long-time loyal customers losing faith and looking elsewhere, I think it’s worth re-evaluating what you’re doing.

Question, do you think it’s unacceptable from Anet’s position for players such as yourself to take a leave of absence and come back later if and when there is content that appeals to you? What do you think Anet finds as an acceptable loss in this case? There is no subscription, there is no power curve you can fall behind in, and at the moment the story is permanent for you to pick up where you left off and replay unlike season 1. Even in GW1 Anet was public about letting you drop away from the game for awhile until there was new content available that you wanted. So, is saying I will stop playing supposed to effect some sort of change with this payment model? Keep in mind, there will be other people playing the game while others are taking a break.

Also, “the “job” of the company is to give customers what they want, and to do it effectively enough as to render competitors moot." Really? You have to think about that statement in terms of who your customers are. While there is some bleedover in demographics between other mmo players and GW2 players, there are many places where those demographic interests do not intersect. Heck, if you were to look at a Venn Diagram of interests within the GW2 playerbase you would probably find a lot of conflicting interests within its various demographics. I just really felt the need to remind everyone that you probably shouldn’t use blanket statements like “give them what they want” and expect it to make sense.

I give a lot of credit to Anet in some aspects, but yes… in this market, it’s astoundingly easy to disappoint your players and even easier to lose them if a competing MMO does a lot of the same stuff better.

You’d think that would put the market in favor of consumers, but it really doesn’t because we’re so dependent on games getting certain features right that are so huge to us. I think a lot of us MMO regulars “settle” for what is best for our desires out of the pack.

And I’m sure a lot of loyal players who stick with this game, or other games, stay only because their friends play the game, or because of some sense of loyalty toward the company itself and its reputation. This, of course, can be abused – in many cases unwittingly – by companies that either aren’t sure where exactly they’re heading or whose design goals largely don’t align with X demographic of stubbornly-sticking-it-out people.

I think there are a lot of people whose MMO wants are pretty simple. But then you get the more niche crowd that wants things to always be getting closer to their ideal vision of an MMO and things get iffy.

Or words to that effect.

What’s this 11/13 nonsense? when 11/11 comes around I have 2 Assassin’s Creed games to play. Then there’s several finals I have to study for, and other things I have to juggle around.

GW2 isn’t going to be one of those things. Generally the only thing that gets me back into an MMO (or any game really) is new content, but not just any new content. Its specifically new ways to play, whether its a new map with new mechanics, new weapons, new skills/traits, new runes/sigils, new classes/subclasses/trait lines, etc.

We already know that when it comes to GW2, only one of those things releases outside of feature packs, and its usually not even the entire map, or its temporary. We also know that we have yet to see new weapons, or anything that expands any of the professions in any significant way. So….yeah.

No new content(ways to play) = no time spent from me. There’s more to Video Games than MMO’s (and other games) that fail to at least attempt to add new ways to play every year.

I don’t hate GW2 or Anet, and I will go back to playing it much more often whenever the hell Anet decides to release the kind of content I like (that I already described in the second paragraph of this post). Until then….Meh, there’s a lot of better ways to spend my free time.

Living World isn’t a bad thing, but if it was advertised to have expansion style content, then it should have expansion style content (or is that what the Feature pack is for now…what has thus far, failed to give any expansion style content, instead opting to rework and redo many of the game’s underlying systems without any significant expansion of any system?)

Someone recently linked me a video of a WoW raid, thinking he was making a point about how awesome they were. Now I use to be a hardcore raider in WoW but I haven’t played it for 2.5 yrs now and haven’t watched a WoW vid in all that time.

The screen was literally covered with timers and addons, all positioned to be in the best possible viewing position. It took me back to those times immediately, how I wasn’t playing the game but playing the UI. Never watching the boss, but watching various addons for the boss abilities or timers and alerts for mine. It was a jolt, I realized just how far I’ve moved away from that kind of playstyle.

The only MMO that’s even come close to piquing my interest was Archeage, but when I watched some play throughs there were those darn yellow question mark quests everywhere. No thanks. Can’t do it anymore.

Neither one of those MMOs will be tearing me away, there’s a freedom I feel in Guild Wars 2 that’s unmatched by anything I’ve ever experienced. Not even interested in going back to timers and addons and yellow question mark linear playstyles.

Just now while I was typing this out, standing afk in Diessa Plateau, I heard some battle sounds. I switched screens and there was a dynamic event underway, tons of players had been drawn to this area and led them to where I was. I jumped in the battle for a few moments, the event passed by, the players washed over me and the living breathing world of Tyria lives on.

If we’re talking about GW2’s longevity, shouldn’t we be talking about games likely to arise in the future that will pose a threat?

You mean like ESO, Wildstar and Archeage ? Oh .. Black Desert .. yeah .. that will of
course blow them all away :p

And EQNext that i see as the only “real” competition is maybe still years away.
Last year it sounded for me that Landmark should be released this year and EQN
in 2015 .. now we still don’t have even a public beta on Landmark .. so we maybe
get that in 2015 … and EQN maybe not before 2016 or so.

EVERY MMO is awesome until it is released then its unfinished. A month after release it just sucks.
Best MMOs are the ones that never make it. Therefore Stargate Online wins.

I honestly wonder what good “news” would do. I can’t play through “news” nor does “news” add any enjoyment to any game I play… sarcasm aside though:

I, like the majority of my friends, have gone back to playing WoW, I was the last of the hold outs really. And I look forward to seeing those hilariously over the top new character models being released (I like the silly there, it fits).
That doesn’t mean I or we’ve “Quit” GW2, it just means we aren’t playing GW2 right now as honestly, there’s nothing really to do that interests us; and “News” of content isn’t playable, so any word of mouth addition isn’t going to sudden get us logging in daily again.

For that matter, I’ll also be playing the new Crusader Kings 2 expansion when it comes out, and Civ Beyond Earth looks like it may get some time. GTA V for PC is heading this way as well (I don’t buy consoles, so finally get to try that one).
Point is, “News” isn’t playable content and I have thus far been extremely disappointed with the content releases in GW2. I had high hopes that within a year post release we would see an expansion/stand alone costing around $50 akin to what GW had done.

Anyway, I’m sure GW and GW2 will be just fine. Its business model seems to be more flexable and giving to the standard ebb and flow of the MMO genre and I’ll be eager to try out any expansion once it’s released… if it’s released – while checking in on things now and then to see what, if anything, of interest to myself has been added.

Talking about expansions .. and WoW .. wasn’t WoW also the game where people had
to wait for over 2 years for an expansion .. while we in Everquest 2 got 3 expansion in that time ?

Normally WoW should also have been dead alread because of their lack of expansions.

I have played wow for a couple of years and yes expansions took around 2 years to be released. However new dungeons/raids/factions/vanity items etc were frequently being released during an expansion. And about the graphics, its not as beatiful as GW2 but the boss mechanics and all the stuff you could do made that up, least to me.

Some of the posts in this thread…. sheesh.

Anywho… As many other have expressed, I don’t really care about the new WoW expansion either. I played WoW for approximately 7 months; prior to MoP being released. That was all I could take. My husband and I both put it down at that point. When MoP was released, and now again with this new expansion, the extent of our interest was “omg another one?” But that’s just us. Perhaps at some point we might go back to peruse the new story lines, but I doubt it. The expansions really aren’t about story or exploring (the enjoyable components of a good rpg), but rather are all about the dungeons and large scale raids, which we aren’t particularly into.

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

Have fun spending money on a game that just releases the same thing again and again and calling it new without adding anything NEW to the game. “Oh look another raid just like last time” “NO it’s not the same it’s NEW!”

Seriously how long has WoW been out and they are just now updating their graphics? GW1 look better than WoW ever did.

Fanboys are now losing their mind thinking them finally updating their graphics is a new innovation to online games and is going to bring WoW back into the glory it was at it’s peak but can’t see or deny it’s the same old stuff now a little more pretty.

Let’s not forget it took WoW almost 3 years before they came out with the first expansion and people are crying it’s been 2 years without anything major released for GW2.

On another note personally I think people who don’t buy gems (helping support the game) don’t really have the ground to complain of the lack of content. People who by the gems to buy the “useless items” from the gem store are the people making Anet a profit so they can continue with the LS, make more “useless” gem store items and do other stuff for the game.

When a expansion or something else major gets released it’s because of the people who buy gems not the players who don’t and just complain about the gem store.

Kill stuff to unlock weapons skills, most confusing thing I ever heard of. (sarcasm)

what is WoW?

It’s the AOL of MMOs, hitting the market at the right place and time with very aggressive marketing strategies. It hit a high of 12 million players 4 years ago but has been fast falling out of favor since then, losing half of those.

Unfortunately it has spawned an almost rabid fanbase that attacks every new game on the market as DEAD if they haven’t reached WoW numbers. Which is funny when you consider that 94 million have tried and quit WoW.

The game itself is fairly generic, they don’t try new things, just recycle the same quest, gear up and raid stuff over and over. Very grindy and treadmilly.
