We need on screen consumable bar

Pressing a button is hard.
Pressing a button in order to bring up a window that entirely or partial obscures your view in order to then double click on another icon in a sea of icons, while in the middle of a fight is, in fact, hard. You are correct sir.
A consumable bar, even if it was only two to four keys, would be very helpful, considering the number of consumables available in the game that basically never get used because it’s such an inconvenience to even try.

I would actually like an item that is a “Consumable Auto-dispenser.” It could reside in the inventory and hold a stack of consumables that it would automatically dispense as needed each time the previous one runs out. It could be a gem store item similar to the Metabolic Primer, except permanent and better. I am forgetful and my consumables often seem to run out exactly when I don’t want them to. Others may want something like the consumable bar you mention because they want to be able to switch foods during fights and such, which this obviously would not help.

Nothing wrong the way it is now – that is too kitten.
I have no issue with an optional 3 slot bar that can hold any 3 consumables

Players are basically lazy – that is too much work…..
I’d rather have a notification that my food ran out, as I am very absent minded (not lazy) and suddenly will notice I don’t have food on.
Not sure I understand the request formulated :S
However I’m not against splitting the effect of consumables/boosts/misc items and the conditions/boons bar.
Everything gets hidden behind the minimap very quickly if you cast “save yourself” under the effects of a magic find boost, a peach pie and a sharpening stone. Having the stone, pie and boost icon at the top of my screen would help me see what conditions I am afflicted.

That’s even more to do once your inventory is open while in combat, bet you die a lot doing that.

Staying on top of consumable downtime to such an obsessive degree of precision is simply not necessary. If your food buff wears off mid-fight, it’s not going to make any noticeable difference if you simply wait until you’re out of combat to re-apply.
I agree that having an additional action bar for consumables would be convenient, but the topic title “We need on screen consumable bar” is quite an exaggeration. Maybe if there were something other than simple consumables we could put in those slots — like more skills or macros — I could see the point of it. But since those things aren’t possible in the game, I don’t see how an additional action bar is imperative right now.

I don’t think this is a good idea at all. People will complain that they left it on, and then used up another food automatically when there was like 5 minutes left in the dungeon, or after the final boss.
You said so yourself, you are forgetful about this kind of stuff. So are many others, who would forget that it’s left activated and blow through their whole stack of food while it isn’t needed, or when they go AFK in town and leave the game running.

IMO, RIFT had the best consumables bar setup.

I don’t think it’s a terrible idea. However, I usually just keep my consumables (fire ele power, ogre pet whistles, food, sharpening stones, etc.) in one to two rows in my top inventory bag. That way they’re always in the same place (at the very top) when I open my inventory.
My suggestion is for two assignable buttons that lets you flip the current /skill bar over to a /emote bar and then over to a /consumable bar.
/skill bar
you know how the weapon swap works now with the 1-5 buttons yeah so the devs would not need to program a whole new UI bar into the game just use what we already got. But maybe add a color change to the borders of each respective bar, so the skill bar would remain black and the consumables could be green and the emote blue.
/emote bar
yes I want those little /emotes in my bar like other games use, here is a link to fine example https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vzV5tyR2Ibo
/consumable bar
I don’t want just foods here guys…. I want it all.
Alcohol, Bundle items like the ash legion spy kit, Blueprints the siege weapons in WvW, Boost that you get from the gem store, Tonics & Mini Pets and other persistent items like the musical items or the riding broom. Think about this too, any item you buy just to spam using, can be clicked alot faster hitting number keys than mouse clicks.
How I would like for this to be added.
First create a new area in the hero’s <Equipment tab, down at the bottom put in a small mock up of the current skill bar when the button u assign to be used with flipping the bar is pressed it will flip between the emotes and consumables mentioned above. When you click one of the buttons inside the bar it will open the correct items that could be placed in the bar, so if you click on the emote bar it will show all the emoticons that can be placed in them and if you are looking at the consumable bar the same way, you can either click the item you want to put in that slot number or drag and drop. Alternately you can drag and drop directly from your inventory without going into the hero tab.
You will be able to set up two buttons to hold that button then the number button for the item you want to use. The button press would only show the items in that bar while (Holding) that button down, as soon as you release the button it goes back to being a skill bar. This should circumvent people complaining about that they had the emote bar open and a thief started doing a number on their backside and all they could do was wave their butts goodbye. Once you have learned your number placement of consumables you should be able to click without thinking or blocking your view and during combat.

I like Gummy’s idea.
I’d also be very happy with 3-4 on screen slots that we can put food/tonics/minipets/toys/instruments etc. in. Ideally with the option to keybind them.
I don’t quite understand why this isn’t higher priority for ANet, given that it would increase the popularity and use of minis and instruments etc. which are gem store items. I thought the water fight thing looked really cool, but I also know that it would wind up forgotten in a bag somewhere if I bought it, just like minis.
I’d love an additional action bar that where we can put consumables or other items (kites) for quick access. Even better if we can add keybinds.

I don’t see how having a small 3-slot Consumable bar would ruin the game.
all for it.

I suggested something similar a while back. Anet didn’t give me the time of day.

I think I’m going to have to say you ware fully unaware of the number of consumables available in this game that have nothing at all to do with food buffs. There are many consumables that actually cause things to happen, like skill type effects, kits and summons. Most of which don’t get used on even an infrequent basis because of effort necessary to enact them.

This is how EQ2 does it, food is equipped like gear and just auto eats it when the timer runs out. Love how that works. Can right click on it and toggle auto consume on and off. I think a concept like that would transition to GW2 really well. Have a slot for food and a slot for oil/stone in the gear panel, stick your consumables in there, toggle auto consume on when yer ready to fight, toggle it off when yer chillin’ in town.
