So I am fairly new to the game and can not really enjoy it as much as most due to my low FPS (25 average in pve). But I still love this game lol. So I made a Ranger a while back, got to 39 and wasn’t enjoying ranger as much as I was at start, so I made a thief which I wanted to have as my first toon in the first place. I am now lvl 28, and already feel like making a new toon (mesmer) to try it out. Am I the only one that does this? I think it may be because I simply have not found my ideal class, but it feels a little silly to keep doing this… So, anyone else find themselves doing this?

1. May I ask for a screenshot of your graphic settings? I may be able to help you getting a better fps.

2. Absolutely not, you are not alone.
I alays do this in MMOs, and this game entices you to do so more than any other as far as I know.
My current main characters’ professions are: elementalist, thief, warrior, engineer(still an alt). I am waiting to see if a new playable race is added before making a ranger and a necromancer.

3. You can teleport to Heart of the Mists(PvP lobby) and try out any profession you want. Everyone has the same gear and skills in that part of the game, so you can easily find a profession which suits your playstyle.

My graphics are on lowest possible, with the exception of the maximum models on screen upped once, having that on minimum sucked lol. Good to know I am not alone. I just feel like I am going to be doing this for a while before I “settle” down to level my first toon to 80.

I did this for quite some time. Sadly I’ve come to rest on only three professions I enjoy (well, four, but one of them doesn’t do the job I want it to). I would say your best bet is to read up a little bit on builds and build options, see how traits look in a calculator, predetermine what your gear would be, etc.

Basically, spend some time off-game deciding what you would like in-game, except the key advice is to not take all criticism at face value because there are quite a few players on these forums, and indeed many other forums, that will say DPS and Zerker is the way to go until their face turns blue.

But don’t take what they say seriously. It certainly helps but don’t sacrifice your own mobility and survivability to make those kittens happy.

Once you’ve established all of this, however, your primary goal in-game would be to find a good guild that you enjoy that you can play with. Guilds tend to have a few handful of players who are really good at the game and don’t need that “DPS zerker meta” crap and they’ll openly accept someone who can’t play the best loadout possible and, without surprise, still do well.

I guess TL;DR – yeah, I had a lot of trouble figuring out what kind of professions I wanted. I just came to accept that this game is so easy that the elitist DPS attitudes are way off mark.

I see. My main issue is my lag, I can’t enjoy thief etc due to this. I found with ranger I could sit back and still help while not being so close where I couldn’t react quick enough. I am building a new gaming PC soon so I will hopefuly have this sorted soon. I may have a go at a mesmer later then, no harm I guess. Would still be nice to see others’ opinions too :P

What do you mean with “maximum models”? Do you mean culling? Because if you turn that down you should experience a big increase in FPS, and then you could probably increase a few of the other graphic settings.

And there is absolutely nothing wrong with taking your time.
There is no race in this game. Unless you need the best of the best right now, which means having to go through painful farming for weeks only to have a little better gear than what otherwise is easily obtained.

I have 12 toons. I can’t stick with the same ones for long so you are not alone. It is called being an alt-aholic. However, after starting with Guardian, then Ranger, and then dabbling in the rest I main my Mesmer now. I hated Mesmer at first until I learned how to play it. Now I love it. I find it most fun and most versatile. However, at times I get bored and fire up an alt or two for change of pace. All my alts have different personalities so it makes things fun to switch around from time to time.

I have one of each profession and I try to play each equally. It means I’m a ‘Jack of all trades, master of none’ sort of player but I have fun. Each one plays differently and I’m don’t get bored using the same skills day after day.

Not weird to make new toons. Heck I have 14 lvl 80’s, one of each prof plus extra rangers, guards, warrior, and each I like for different reasons. And I understand about the FPS problem, but for me it’s because of my atrocious internet speed. Sometimes the meta events are like looking at a flip book, and I could probably take pics on a camera that fast LOL Proud to be an Alt-aholic

7k hr, 13k AP, 16 char, all classes 80 Sadly, 3.5k hr. Ranger

I live on the edge of an decent connection. If I’m lucky I get 1 or 2 bars of 3G. If I’m not lucky, I get zero bars of 3G or even zero bars of 2G. I’ve found that having a minipet out is useful. I keep an eye on it while running around. If I see it stop moving I know I’m lagging and need to stop until it starts again and catches up. If I run up to a node and can’t harvest it and I see the minipet is standing off a few feet, I know the game thinks I’m actually over there and not by the node and either need to wait till the mini runs over to me or go to character select to reset my position.

Uh, see sig below. No, it’s not silly. Sounds like you are hunting for the right class for you. Totally been there, done that. Through multiple games.

It is not unusual for me to have upwards of 40 alts in any game I play. I am usually look for the right feel (aethestics, etcetera) as well as trying out different classes, and builds. I often finally find my “main” after playing several other classes for 6 months to a year. Drives some of my poor guildmates nuts as we are trying to build synergistic groups.

You are smart to experiment on the front end.

Going through all the professions (even at a low level), will give you a feel for what they can do and an understanding of general gameplay if you come up against one in PvP or WvW.

Keep experimenting until you get it right and good luck finding the professions that work for you!

Oh, and welcome to GW2.

BG: 52 alts, 29 lvl 80’s. They all look good, so I am done with the game: Oct 2014

I do this. Only one level 80 (Elementalist). I make and remake the others all the time.

Sadly, I believe there is no cure available to current medicine…

This is often called “Altitis”, which simply means, that you like to create new characters for various reasons. Be it the looks, the class mechanics, disliking later content, or whatever.

I do not think most GW2 players have this, as people tend to level at least one character to max level to see what the game offers.

From what I have seen, people with altitis tend to give up at one point, as they have a hard time to break a certain level barrier and therefore missing out a lot of content. Restarting new characters can only entertain you for so long and areas start to get boring.

I am actually more of the opposite, as I usually have a main that is there for everything and very few other characters (well I once manged to level a necro to 80 as second main, but the game already felt repetative).

My advice is not to stick to one character, but you should choose one of your toons and level him each playsession just one level. After that, play whatever you want. This way you will eventually reach the level cap and be able to see all content.
