Unfortunately it seems as if this game isn’t doing very well with the average MMO gamer. There is a TON of negativity in the MMO community towards this game.

If you bring up Guild Wars 2 in a MMO community you’re swamped with “GW2 blows”, “GW2 sucks” etc. They usually seem to dislike the leveling and say it’s boring, grindy and monotonous. I’ve heard complaints that it’s “not fun” and there’s “no end game”.

Question is how long can this game be supported if the majority of the MMO community sees it as a failure already just a month past release?

I love the game still BUT I know that an MMO is dependent on having a large loyal community if it wants to stay fun and receive constant updates/improvements etc.

It seems that those of us that like this game are vastly outnumbered and the WvW and dynamic events in this game need people to work properly.

Thoughts?

I don’t need anyone elses approval to like this game. That’s not what I’m saying. What I’m getting at is the more people that like this game and play it the more content we will see and the longer it will be supported.

ArenaNet isn’t going to sink a lot of time and money into supporting something that only appeals to a very small niche crowd. We need more people to like and enjoy this game if we want to see it grow for years to come.

An MMO’s lifeblood is what “other” people think. You can’t just stick your head in the sand on this one. I know that we’d all like to think that trick will work. But bottom line is if the community isn’t there, then there won’t be anyone to play with. Which is the entire point of an MMO.

So you’ve managed to poll every single one of the 2 million odd players who bought Guild Wars 2 and got their opinion on it?

In every single mmo that has come out since WoW people always claim an mmo is failing or dead no less than 2 weeks after it’s initial launch. The thing is no one who made that claim has ever been right yet. Unless we’re talking about FF14.

The point is just because some people say something doesn’t mean it’s true and I find it hard to believe there is a “ton of negativity” revolving around GW2 in the mmo community.

P.S. I didn’t know there was just 1 mmo community now.

Interested in what ‘community’ you are moving in. Places I go to read/watch, all speak highly of GW2. Yes they acknowledge the games problems, but generally the feeling is good.
But if you look for and surround yourself with people who dont like the game, you will find what you are looking for.

You’re totally right. I’ve seen this happen with many MMO’s since WoW. The community in the game that likes it denies that the lack of players is an issue. Like you say they’d rather just stick their head in the sand.

Someone saying that they read someone else say GW2 sucks doesn’t mean the game is dying. It doesn’t really mean anything other than someone said someone else said something that simply doesn’t matter.

If someone has a criticism about GW2 then they can post it constructively and we can talk about it. I don’t see any way of debating “GW2 sucks” or any reason to worry about it. People say WoW sucks all the time.

But we’re all here… To be honest, I think GW2 is doing fine as a community. It’ll grow more after people have devoured all the other content out there that they pay monthly for and no longer want to pay because they’ve already eaten all the content :-P But honestly, I think GW2 is doing fine and will grow on it’s own merits.. just give it time.

Edit:
Also.. I haven’t really felt like the game needs more people to begin with.. I never have trouble finding anyone to play with and I always see people out and about.

Slow down and smell the pixels.

I’m still level 46 and I have no problem finding people to do anything. Yesterday there were like 30 people standing outside Ascalonian Catacombs which is a low level dungeon. Every time I stumble upon an elite or champion mob I just have to wait a few minutes and someone will show up to team up and kill it.

This is game is doing just fine imo.

Except we can’t even if it is constructive criticism. Either the thread gets locked and/or deleted or we’re faced with a deluge of “well don’t let the door hit you on the way out kthxbye” remarks.

No one is referring to boards/forums etc. Most of us play in guilds either in other games or this game and see when people lose interest in the game when they stop logging in or they go back to other games they played previously. This isn’t rocket science people.

Stop denying the problem. Ignoring it or denying the issue doesn’t make it go away.

I’m not exactly sure if im using the same internet as you are OP. Almost every other gaming forums/website that i associate myself with always has fantastic responses to GW2.. IGN/gameradar/g4/mmotribune/mmorpgforums; Everyone reacts very positively to this games mention because of how new and fresh it is.

And remember, There will always be people who are critical of games, but it doesn’t mean they are right lol. Almost all my friends have completely left WoW and come to this game so clearly its doing something right. (except those 1 or 2 diehard blizzard fans ofcourse)

This game does everything new and fresh, and you should try and get used to it because something tells me that MMO’s that will be released from now on will be copying a lot of GW2’s ideas

It comes down to you subjectively like an entertainment platform, or you do not. Your friends that you site as the source for the “majority” of people- if they do not like the game, do you suspect they would ever change their opinion? What content would change their mind?

That is too bad for them, they are missing out on a great game experience.

It shouldn’t surprise anyone that some people will drift off, whether back to WoW or any of the alternatives out there. A lot of people prefer specific features of other games, and some of the MMO crowd just seem to be chasing a fix they probably won’t ever find.

GW2 does some things better than other games, other things not as well, and others not at all (raiding).

Still, I think GW2 is better prepared to deal with moderate population loss than some other recent MMOs (e.g. SWTOR, but even small servers on WoW over the past many years). Two key advantages this game has to coping with declining log-ins:

1) Free and open server transfers, so as the overall population dwindles (which it was bound to) people can readily relocate away from ghost towns.
2) Economic model based primarily on box sales means that development and support are unlikely to take a big hit, unless it shrinks to the point that future expansion box sales become doomed.

Several of my friends have moved on (out of MMOs, or back to WoW) but imo that’s par for the course.

You sound like you’re just whining because a game you play isn’t “OMG popular!”, and you don’t feel like a cool kid playing it. Forums and your personal circle of friends are not a majority, btw. The majority are people who are actually PLAYING the game and enjoying it, instead of whining about it on a forum.

An MMO’s lifeblood is what “other” people think. You can’t just stick your head in the sand on this one. I know that we’d all like to think that trick will work. But bottom line is if the community isn’t there, then there won’t be anyone to play with. Which is the entire point of an MMO.

On the anvil rock server it allready feels like there isn`t anyone to play with anymore. The first month of the game people were everywhere and doing the god events constantly and there almost always something going on. It`s even hard to find people to do dungoen runs. I spend more silver teleporting around to recruit group members then I make from the dungeon itself almost. Aside from bots being everywhere, the real players have thinned quite a bit. I can travel to almost every zone that normally had people everywhere and now see maybe a handful of real players if I am lucky.

I`ve never seen a playerbase vanish like this before. I hope something is done to bring people back though. Maybe people are playing on different times, maybe they transferred to other servers, but it`s like a ghost town on AR.

Odd, over on mmorpg.com, GW2 is the highest rated MMO out of the entire list.

http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/show/all/sCol/rankHype/sOrder/desc

Ratings like that tend to be highest when a game’s launched recently. We’ll see if it stays that high. It’s possible, I guess.

Thoughts?

Comedy at its finest, seeing as how that’s my opinion on pretty much every other MMO out there.

I will admit that GW2 does not have much of an endgame. But what MMO does? GW2 has Orr, Dungeons, WvW, and sPVP. Compare that to WoW which has… insert highest level pve area here, raids, and PVP, and I don’t see what people are complaining about.

Am I just completely missing some appeal of WoW? I played it for a month and had no desire to do so again, especially since I had to pay for such a “privilege”. Meanwhile in GW2 I’m 80 and still having a blast.

Yes, GW2 has its flaws. Every game does. But there’s a lot of good mixed in there as well.

As for GW2 being a “minority,” well, that is in all honesty pretty much a given. WoW came before it and really popularized the genre, so people will swear by it regardless of how atrociously kitten it is.

Lookin’ day and livin’ night; I’m alright…

“If someone has a criticism about GW2 then they can post it constructively and we can talk about it.”

Except we can’t even if it is constructive criticism. Either the thread gets locked and/or deleted or we’re faced with a deluge of “well don’t let the door hit you on the way out kthxbye” remarks.

Well good luck to all the casual gamers, you’ll eventually hit 80 and start seeing the cracks, perhaps we can have a civil discussion next year this time.

And, yes, you missed the point. Otherwise, you still wouldn’t be pointing at OTHER PEOPLE’S reviews…

Do YOU like the game? That should be enough, no?

Of course I enjoy the game, but I also read review sites to find new games that I might enjoy. I’m sure lots of other people do as well.

OP, so by MMO community you mean the few people you’ve met who play MMOs and probably have the same interests in MMOs as you do.

I can make the counter claim that I’ve been playing MMOs since text based MUDs and the majority of people that I talk to who play MMOs think GW2 is a fun game.

Who is right?

I don’t think either group is necessarily a reflection of the entirety of the MMO gaming population nor would I attempt to position either group as being such.

Thankfully, the pizzeria offers other toppings and crust choices… See the point?

You get it, I get it, people who can’t see past the end of their nose will never get it. Welcome to the age of pop-culture, if 10 million people aren’t playing it (because 10 million people can’t be wrong of course), then they won’t even touch it.

Or perhaps because people want a multiplayer game with a robust, dynamic player community coupled with the fact that a large player base means that any time invested is likely to stick around for a while?

Connection error(s) detected. Retrying…

Odd. Media companies make money from good reviews.

((also, if I was sent a free copy (copies!) of GW2 and a bunch of cool promotional stuff from Anet and NCSoft, I’d love the game, too.))

Odd. User reviews don’t make any money and still give GW2 a 9.

Odd. Polls are always honest reflections of the majority… o.O

And, that “user review” section is controlled by the company that owns the website. Not “the community”.

I am NOT a GW2 hater. Stop reacting like I am. I simply support the idea that if the community isn’t pleased that it will impact the lifeblood of the game. Simple. If there is any negative impressions out there they need to be dealt with. And, it can only be done in ONE way: stop the negative comments. Now, THAT can be done in many ways. TWO MAIN WAYS ARE: change the “bad” things about the game so people stop thinking negative things OR just stop the negative comments. What I am trying to say is, “just stopping the comments won’t save the game. only fixing ‘the bad’ will…”

I love this fictional majority you speak of. WVW queue, queens overflow, lions overflow, orr packed to the brim with players.

Players that are “playing” the game.

Psh, mods are slacking.
