Since Hot launched i’ve barely gotten any of this leather from any source. How am i supposed to upgrade guild hall that requires tons of the hard leather squares, while also trying to make Kudzu that requires a stack of it?

To give u one tiny example, today i ran SW full cycle meta and got tons of loot bags, salvage gear etc, and guess how many hard leather i got out of it all? 1 A single pce of leather!

Seriously, this is ridiculous, no wonder hard leather squares cost 35s ea or more. There’s none to be found, at least not for me.

Please Anet fix this we need that leather more than ever.
Thank you.

Yeah mystic forging them is definitely a sure way to get them. and obviously from the sections, not the squares. As 4 thick leather sections are needed for thick leather squares, but only 3 hardened sections are needed for cured hardened squares.

This is something that ANet needs to address.

There is too much of an imbalance of supply/demand for Hardened Leather since HoT release. Here’s a chart of how severe the price hike has been:

https://www.gw2tp.com/item/19732-hardened-leather-section?full=1

Requiring 10 refined hardened leather squares per Gossamer Patch along with the crappy salvage rates has made this extremely problematic. A single EXOTIC set of armor now costs 30g+ in Gossamer Patches alone – not counting the additional T6 fine mats and other crafting components. For new players this is an absurd amount of gold to spend, and they are being priced out by players who do have the means to farm all day to buy these materials.

But hey, this is “balancing the economy” right!? /s

forging them does not go well for you.
250 x thick leather square = 18g2s50c
1 hard leather square = 40s85c
5 crystalline dust = 1g40s85c
= 19g84s20c
average hard leather squares you get is 17:
/ 17 = 1g16s71c
you’d be FAR better off buying it for 41s

It comes down to a lot more people opening bags on lower level characters. I get a lot of hardened leather opening on my 80, and I can actually get ecto off of my rares whereas 50 somethings cannot.

I’m sure someone can chime in and say this is stupid, and prove so with math. But, I decided that transferring all my bags is too time consuming because I can immediately open bags as I progress through content versus sitting down to dedicate an hour or two to open all of them.

You really have to factor in the opportunity cost. Farming+opening bags along the way, or just opening bags on an alt. Got a bit carried away but, that’s really what it is. If more just opened bags on 80s they’d have more than enough hardened leather unless they’re really unlucky.

Yes but rarely. If you use one of the handy sites that track promotions and do it enough times it averages out to the published average. However the median amount is below the average while “paydays” bring the average up. But with even a fair number of times, I do 30 a night, I still get times that are +/-15% around the “average”.

This happend a while ago and was in patch notes and on the forum. Anet said they would be reducing the drop rate of them from salvaging since they were never the higher value anet wanted them to become. So anet reduced the supply of them by a lot and in turn increased demand and their value. This was anets goal so its highly unlikely they intend go back to giving us them from salvaging again. Dont forget they are used to craft legendaries when they were like 30c each it wasnt the goldsink anet wanted them to be.

You can also buy exotic armor with Dungeon tokens, however, salvaging exotics is worthless. I tried with 10 exotics, got 3 sections, is really ridiculous.

I don’t know what Anet is planning, forcing players to gamble on MF instead of motivating people to craft, aka, actually playing? Many newcomers will have to master some of the 3 armor crafting professions at least ’til 400, and they require at some point tons of this leather and gossamer scraps.

I hope they fix the drop ratio for this, crafting ascended or exotic armor was not ever so expensive like it is now.

How is using the TP any less “playing the game” than crafting? I know people who can’t stand to craft, but love the TP (and vice versa, of course).

The drop rate for T6 mats from salvaging exotic armor has been the same for years. And for those same years, people complained that T6 mats were undervalued (often vendor …or below, when that was still possible).

So one could argue that ANet has finally fixed things so that T6 cloth & leather finally have value.

The thing is: there’s no fundamental reason why prices should remain the same year after year. Therefore, there’s really nothing to fix. The TP allows me to play whatever content I like, sell the stuff I don’t want, and buy stuff I do. It also enables those who don’t care about crafting to earn gold by selling their mats to folks willing to pay so that they don’t have to farm specific mats.

I was talking about the Mystic Forge, not the Trade Post.
Yes, playing in the TP is playing the game for sure, you can invest a X amount of effort to get exactly that back or more if you know how to play the economics. With the MF however is pure gamble, is like casino, all about luck and players often lose much more than what they gain in return. But sure, there is always someone who loves even that kind of thrill, but most people will only use MF as a last resource, no wonder is called Mystic Toilet because most people hate it.

On the other hand, the problem about getting this material on the TP doesn’t sound right for newcomers, it is a really basic material for playability, is key for exotic and ascended armor. Is not like it is part of a Legendary which is optional for players to craft solely for the skin. Is my opinion that 30G is too much for new players to get an exotic armor, I don’t think that is fair. Now how one will be able to farm valuable material to trade if they barely have a decent armor to fight. Getting killed and downed all the time is as tedious as the MF.

Ascended armor for instance was already a laborious and expensive task, and it was ok like that, now it is just way too much. You’ll need 300 squares to craft the insignias, it is over 120 G with the prices right now sky rocketing to almost 50s!.

And just for the record, yes, crafting is tedious but if people want to get the best from the game they will crave for ascended armor and weapons, and you can’t buy that on TP. At this point if you are at the end game stage with only an exotic armor well that is a strange decision.

Use google (or Bing, etc). Guild search is bugged permanently (short version of long story: contractor no longer works for ANet, for reasons one hopes are obvious).

site:forum-en.guildwars2.com leather

The reason it’s useful to search is that you would have seen that the “discussion” follows the same lines without anyone changing their mind and without a response from ANet. That might or might not discourage you from starting a new thread.

If you don’t want to search, here’s what we can expect to see:

  • A bunch of people complaining that the price is too high.
    • Most of these folks have no background in economics or stats (which doesn’t make their opinion invalid).
    • Nearly all of them are frustrated because they want to make/buy something now and just realized the price was a lot more than what they expected or budgeted.
  • A smaller group points out that there’s no such thing as a price that’s “too high” (or “too low”); it’s all a matter of perspective.
    • Most of these have a background in econ or stats or market experience (which doesn’t make their opinion valid).
    • Nearly all of this group agrees that the supply is sufficient to meet all takers, so it’s clear (to them) that folks are simply willing to pay more now.
  • Some of them point out that the difference between ascended metal armor and ascended leather remains within 10-20%, a historically consistent ratio, i.e. by their definition, the price is just “high” not “too high”.
  • Some also mention that the situation used to be that leather was a lot cheaper and cloth armor was more expensive and things sorted themselves out.

The first group thinks that the situation is urgent and important and (usually) demands that ANet “do something”. The second group thinks the situation is interesting and not urgent, that ANet should look and make adjustments within the context of the entire economy, not this single item.

The second group thinks the first group is being too short-sighted (worrying about their own immediate concerns rather than the global economy); the first group think the second group is made up of 1%ers who aren’t feeling the pain of paying substantial premiums.

tl;dr eh, I don’t really have a tl;dr. If you want to start a new thread, that’s your right. I wouldn’t, however, hold my breath expecting a resolution that pleases anyone.

Based on their silence on the topic we can only, unfortunately, assume that ANet believes the price of leather is in a good spot right now.

I understand that some people think this is better than it being dirt cheap, but really people? There is a middle ground between dirt cheap and way too expensive relative to other materials of the same grade and tier. I don’t want leather to be dirt cheap either but I also don’t see why this means it should be the most expensive “regular” material.

The price should be addressed by Anet in my opinion. Change the recipes to use less leather (either fewer pieces of leather needed to refine it, or fewer refined pieces needed for the actual recipes but not both).

Exactly. I just crafted a set of medium Marauder’s gear and spent almost 50 gold. The Gossamer wasn’t even 1 gold in comparison. The Ebony Orbs were cheap too. I even had enough leather to make all of the panels and linings. Where did it matter? The patches. Each set of patches required 10 pieces of refined hardened leather. That’s 30-40s x10 x6. So it costs 18-24 Gold to craft enough patches to make a set of exotic gear. Where did the rest of my funds go? Pack Runes, but that’s a different problem.

A-net did boost the supply of leather with the new LS3 map. After players get the items they want from the map they will leave and the supply of leather/cloth will drop down. T6 leather is still very rare, the others(leather/cloth) not so much. It still cost the same amount to gear up a alt now as it did at the start of HoT. Players notice the high leather prices more than the lower cloth prices.

I leveled an alt recently and they’ve changed the story quest rewards so that you get about half a set of exotic armor. The rest you can either buy via gold or karma. So it’s not terribly hard to get equipped in exotics now.

I do understand that exotic armor should not come from doing nothing, but the sum of all those changes is just too much. Why do we need 5 patches for just 1 insignia, when all other tiers just need 1 patch for 1 insignia, which makes a lot more sense. Why would any person need 5 patches to make one insignia? What are they doing with the rest of the patches? Practice the inscription?!

All in all, the insignias need more than twice as much leather as the entire armor (for medium armor which is supposed to be made mainly of leather) … kind of weird. Also, the drop rates of hardened leather are almost non-existent.

“the problem is that we needed a slight nudge, and what we got was a hammer blow.”
This sums it up nicely. I’m not asking to make hardened leather cheap as hell, just make it drop more often so one doesn’t have to beggar himself in order to make one set of exotic armor. And pls, pls, PLS change that absolute nonsense of needing 5 patches to craft 1 insignia. There is just no reason to do this apart from abstrusely manipulating the market.

With LW Season 3, Anet introduced ways to farm all tiers of leather, cloth and metal in lvl 80 maps, so players arent forced anymore to play lower level maps, use karma to forge salvageable cloth gloves for linen or open champ bags on med-level alts.

This already is a mayor improvement to the previous situation. They also just introduced a new ascended crafting system that doesnt require any t6 leather for any ascended armor or weapons.

And pls, pls, PLS change that absolute nonsense of needing 5 patches to craft 1 insignia. There is just no reason to do this apart from abstrusely manipulating the market.

Insignia that requires a recipe you learn or buy from a master, aka intricate insignia, requires more patches than those you discover. And top tier gear, exotic and ascended, requires 5 patches instead of 2. Why? Because it’s top tier gear.

Your character will spend most of it’s life at max level where you will get max level drops including T5-T6 mats, more if you salvage the gear drops you don’t want to use. So crafting top tier gear will cost more mats to suck up that excess amount of mats.

LW3E4 — Farm those centaur! After about 15 minutes I had about 20 hardened plus lots of other leather.

This is exactly what I’m doing.

Forum “experts” say the new leather farm is a bust, but I’ve joined several farm trains, and I’m getting what I need for crafting and having fun smacking centaurs doing it.

I’m curious about this too. I had also been hearing the farm isn’t good, but I joined a farm squad to hit the POI I needed up there. I didn’t even go for the leather, but in the few minutes (5 maybe) I was with the group I got 6 pieces of leather.

I think the “experts” are basing this off two things:

First, the price of leather on the trading post didn’t move much the moment of release. IMO, this is to be expected: high prices mean lots of pent up demand, where people farm leather, then use it to make those things they really wanted but couldn’t afford before.

As that demand is gradually consumed we will see more leather being farmed and sold, which will gradually lower the price to the point that people are no longer motivated to spend the time and effort to farm it.

Second, they looked at the drop rates for T5 vs T6 leather in the farm, and concluded that it was broken because it returned significantly more T5. IMO, this neglects that this is the same as any other farm (eg: wood, much more T5 than T6), and that the leather farm model means you can’t skip the T5 “nodes” on your way to collect only T6, where you can with other resources.

The returns do also more closely model the actual demand when crafting, in terms of T5 vs T6 volumes, than I think many people acknowledge when they are narrowly focused only on “things that are very expensive right now”, mostly T6 only crafts.

I agree with SlippyCheeze. People had unrealistic expectations of what the farm would do. It’s going to take a while for any farm to affect the global demand for a high-volume mat like leather.

It’s definitely not the most lucrative gold/hour farm, but it is very efficient for those who want to ‘gather’ their own leather.

And lets not forget, that the last two updates included a new raid and a balance patch, so since the leather farm got introduced, common mats are in high demand, as everybody is changing builds and crafting new gear.

t5 leather is the primary loot tier from the centaur farm and rightly so. t5 leather is the biggest cost factor for the new ascended crafting system. To craft 20 grandmaster leatherworker marks to get a full set of medium ascended armor, half of the ~400g you need to buy all mats is paid for t5 leather.

And its used for EVERY ascended weapon acquired with grandmaster marks as well, bonus sections needed for any huntsman weapon.

Since the centaur farm got introduced, t5 leather already more than doubled in price and 40% of the supply is gone. So most players, especially those that are crafting ascended gear through the old or the new system, should be more concerned about their future t5 cunsumption, rather than the price of t6 leather. Thats only relevant to those players, who want to obtain exotics with hot stats or those that want to stat swap their ascended armor. Stat swapping should have a decent price tag because those players, that already have all the ascended gear they need, still need a gold/mat sink linked to common mats and build swapping. The players that complain about the high exotic armor costs for hot stats compared to vanilla stats definately have a case but I think those high costs and crafting being their only reliable source (compared to vanilla stat exotics) are intended by Anet.
They recently mentioned on several occasions that they want to make the crafting system more relevant in acquiring exotic and ascended gear and in their opinion its not hot exotics being too expensive, its vanilla exotics being too cheap.

Do you realize the “long term” effect of leather has been zero impact? Just pull up a price chart.

Do you realize that “long term” hasn’t happened yet? It’s only been a month since the farm was added (slightly less if you take into account the time it’s taken for people to organize it into a proper farm).

added: there are a lot of people that didn’t buy leather, hoping for the farm to take care of their needs. It will take a while for that demand to be realized, whether those folks decide to run the farm, pay the current prices, or change goals.

It takes a really, really long time for a market to adjust unless there’s a substantial shock, such as changing the recipes.

In addition, there are new things that require leather and new reasons for people to want leather gear, which also affects the demand.

In other words, a lot of people are getting the leather they need because of the farm, which is something they couldn’t have realistically done in January without using the TP. We also don’t know whether prices would have been higher still without the farm.

I checked my t5-6 leather and I have over 150g worth. That’s from predominately playing wvw, and after I made several armor sets worth of insignia for converting ascended gear, over the past 2 months.

I don’t understand how people are not getting enough leather to do sane amounts of crafting.

Prices for T5-T6 leather has actually gone up since the farm episode 4. But I think that’s due to players expecting a price collapse that didn’t happen and tried to unload their supply. Post balance changes has caused a lot of volatility in T4.

Can’t help but bump this topic again. And again. And again. Until something is done.

Good luck there. When LS3 Ep4 with its glorified leather farm came in there was a 200+ post thread here considering all this situation. And none of the devs commented there, even with a single post. At the same time they made lots of comments in threads about cats.
They just don’t care about h.leather price. Why bother? It is not something really important. Like cats.

I know right. I “farm” T2-T4 leather, some 50K sections in total during the last 30 days. I think it’s a bit too competitive to “farm” T5-T6. Not worth the effort.
