What Happened to New Skills and Traits?
They decided to go the path of a useless gear treadmill. Minimal or not, it’s still there and before the armor comes, we’ll have to wait.
In the ‘Whats to Come in 2013’ article, we were promised new skills and traits were going to be added on a regular basis. It’s nearing November, devs, can we get an update on what’s happening?
Are being postponed due to all the existing balance problems?
Anet dev has talked about it somewhere on these forums, stating that some things in the “What’s to come in 2013” are taking longer than expected and have to be pushed in to 2014.

As far as I know the only thing that might get pushed to 2014 were new legendaries, other stuff on the 2013 schedule should make it before the end of the year.

I can’t remember what exactly Anet was referring to when they said that. I just remember them stating “some things” were not going to make it in 2013, I just don’t remember exactly what they were referring to.
I’m gonna go team A-net just this once and say…hey at least they finally made traits and skill and rune/signet tooltips understandable and clearly state what they modify and how much. New skills will be good but the uselessly incoherent info on the old tooltips was a constant irritant and that’s fixed. So HUZZAH!
Melodic Whisper, Thief :: Mephelotic Phantasm, Mes :: Xoboda, Guard :: Plikkik, Engi
Jade Quarry since launch then I started wandering the borderlands of Yak’s Bend
I’m just concerned that many existing builds have very little choice. For example, of you’re a Guardian with an AH+PoV build, you’re going to fill your utility bar with shouts. At the momens, there’s only 4 shouts to choose from, and Save Yourselves! can be very risky to use in such a build and arguably doesn’t benefit from AH much. So you’re basically left with 3.5 shouts to choose from…. Which isn’t exactly a lot.
Unfortunately Arena.net’s priority =/= the player’s priority. Instead of new skills and traits, new armor sets, craftable precursors, new legendaries they are busy with the Living Story which 80% of the commnity is sick and tired of.

80% of the player base has left due to living story. I guess maybe of the remaining players 80% like it… but that still seems unlikely.
I guess I should clarify that 80% of the 3 500 person guilds I am in have left. I guess different players experiences could vary. But my PvP my WvW and now my PvE guilds have all but collapsed.
My main concern is how they plan to introduce new skills after they started WvW season 1. I’m only casual WvW’er at best, but they said that they would not many any balance/changes (if I recall) during the season. That leaves 3 options:
1) They come out in one of the two December patches.
2) They come out before December, but are unusable in WvW until after season 1 is done.
3) They get pushed to next year.
If I recall the dev post about things getting pushed to next year it was just crafting precursors and the new legendaries/new types of legendaries.
So that means we still have ascended armor (yay….) and new skills/traits (which supposedly require some effort to get) to come out in the next 5 patches. Also ascended armor may not also come out during WvW season 1 for all we know, again to try to keep with their current balance. If that’s the case we may get a very big December patch.
To further incentivize spending your points we will not be introducing any new ability lines during the season, nor shall we be making any other changes to WvW, with the exception of bug fixes, until the season concludes.
If they don’t consider ascended armor and new skills/traits to “change” WvW then we could see one of them in Nov and the other in Dec.
The next content update seems to address that with the addition of a new healing skill for everyone: http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/game/473/view/news/page/1/read/28849/Guild-Wars-2-Tower-of-Nightmares-Announced.html

Interesting, not asymmetric, but more healing options is good all around, and looks like it gives another cleanse option for people.

I don’t see the leap to this conclusion. This new “skill” that all players can have is most likely an equipped bundle skill specific to the content only.

Eh, you could be right, I guess I’m trying to be optimistic, and that this is the small start of getting new traits/skills.
this release also introduces new rewards like the Antitoxin Spray, a new universal healing skill that allows any player to cleanse themselves and nearby allies of poison, toxins, and other nasty effects.
To me that sounds more like a “racial” healing skill than a bundle (racial in the sense that it most likely will heal less than current class options, but will at least cleanse).
They made the devs wear little dwarf hats and put them into the mines.
It seems that selling gems is a better business than building video games.
Last time I checked… it was only October, and there were still like 5 (or 6?) patches left between now and the end of the year.
Well, we’re getting a new generic healing skill for all classes.
Only took over a year.
Maybe we’ll have some more build variety 5 years from now.

Agreed. I took the wording in the blog post to mean that the skill-based HP system would launch by the end of the year. Nothing was said about when the first would appear. And look, there’s a new universal heal skill coming next patch.

Depends on if you completed the personal story or not, hehe.
Just wait until the WvW season is over, I think we will see the new skills just with the last years patch of 2013, because they said that they would make no changes to the game, that are anyhow balancing relevant while the season is running and new skilsl/traits would totally change the current game balancing, so it has just to be somethign that wil come after the season…
The seasin is just 4 days old.. it will last 7 weeks, so we have basically to endure 3 patches, until we will find out with the 4th patch at the end of the year out, if ANet can hold up onto their words (promises), or if it will end up as content, that will get into the game with early 2014.
In terms of new skills. I hope they saw what some of us posted way back when.
New weapon skills. (Not new weapons, though they’ve stated that they’d like to give classes some existing extra weapons before). I’d love to be able to pick our 2-5 skills. As it stands, you pretty much just pick 3 skills. Being able to have more freedom in what skills we choose would do wonders for new build options.

I think similar things. The same could be stated for ascended armor. We may see a very big early Dec patch. Though they may have a way to introduce new skills but make them not usable in WvW.

Zhaitan got killed in most pathetic way ever, he’s also the easiest boss I’ve ever seen….even Hogger was greater challange. Seriously, ancient dragon, probably same or even stronger in power than the gods, got killed by a freaking canoon and when he tried to destroy us during encounter, he barely scratched a ship instead of totally destroying it and forcing us to real fight without shinies
As a Ranger, I’ll call Snuffles and better beg him for mercy!

Wow. Everyone gets something at least useful and Warriors get a kittenty boss that will stand still after scratching whatever the Warrior is fighting for 10 minutes. Still better than a ranger, I guess.

Genius!
i really hope the new skills and traits thing isnt 1 sub par healing skill for all classes.
ANNND if this is temporary it will definitely be subpar.
but i have a feeling it is, and will be. All i got to say is if this is what yall meant by new skills and traits….
go back to the drawing board, come up with
either new weapons
new skill swaps for weapons
new utilities that fill in missing gaps
or new elites
this type of thing will never satisfy the need for progression, growth, and new builds that players are asking for.

I love how people pull numbers out of their….imagination to try to make a point. You have no clue how many people by percentage are sick of the Living World stuff. It’s probably less than you think is my guess.
By the same token, not everyone is barracking for more skills. Some people certainly are, but many people are not build-a-holics and are happy just to throw stuff together that works Those people aren’t hurting for build options, because they don’t follow any sort of meta.
I’d wager there are far more people who don’t even know a meta exists than there are those who pay attention to it.

looks like Anet balance to me.
MARA (EU) Gunnar’s Hold
honestly, i’m glad they’ve done as little as they have with skills and traits, and focused on playable content.
the 2 two things Anet does poorly IMO is class balance and QA….what they do strongly is art direction and content design.
so i hope they continue to put off new traits/skills….and keep making better content like the Clocktower JP, SAB, Zephyr Sanctum, Aetherblade Retreat, new TA path and Teq event.

Almost my entire guild is tired of it and we are an active PvX guild. All my friends are tired of it. A gazillion people here on the forums are tired of it. All those people who left because of the living story are tired of it. I’ll correct my statement then: make it ~90%! The living story is just a cheap way to satisfy achievement hunters.

I would be happier if they give us another utility slot so we can have a choice of 4 instead of 3 utility skills.

Most classes have been using the same 3 utilities and elite, and mostly the same weapon sets for a year now. Plus a lot of the current builds have been around in some form since Beta. It’s getting boooooring.

Yet Anet decided to create more teams dedicated to the living story. Perhaps your anecdotal evidence is just that, but Anet has hard facts to show that their player base generally likes it, and is the reason why they decide to add more teams to creating it.

Getting feedback from forums is another way to get feedback, though isn’t near as useful as the data they would collect from the game itself and on what the players are doing.

But I thought you said they already have all the data they need, hence it seemed strange to me they’d be willing to organise a poll for the community. Especially on teh community’s take on the LS drip-feeding.
I hope you do realise how incredibly difficult it is to not only collect but actually interpret data. And that’s exactly what I think Anet is going through right now, they’ve got the data about login times / frequencies and such but are drawing the wrong conclusions from them due to confounding factors they aren’t aware of.

I never said they had ALL the data they need. You know what they will do with the forum feedback? They’ll test it against the data they see in the game. If a bunch of people on the forums say “We hate living story, we will not play it, stop wasting money on it”, but their data from the game shows that 75% of their player base is participating in, then obviously the forum feedback does not represent what the players are actually doing. This is what I’m talking about, they’ve got the data, but not the causality of the numbers.
People don’t always participate in things because they want to but out of necessity or other reasons than fun, ask the people on the champ trains.
Hence an, albeit very well thought out, in game poll should give more accurate and less vague information.
