Just curious, what profession do you think has the most interactive and enjoyable combat? For Pve or PvP

I only tried Gaurd and Ele. I personally like playing Guardian a whole lot more since I was trying to aim for the most healiest/support class. I’m not usually a Melee user in games but this is a fun change of pace. xD [PvE by the way.]

I’ve tried them all to at least see and use all the weapon skills and several slot skills, along with complete inspections in the mists, and I’d personally (keyword) rank them in this order, from greatest to least:

Guardian
Elementalist
Engineer (as long as you don’t just spam grenade #1)
Mentalist
Thief
Ranger
Warrior
Necromancer

This is just for pve. For example, I think warriors are much more interesting in pvp because half of warriors “thing” is getting in melee range and preventing targets from getting away. A lot of these moves are fairly pointless in pve because 90% of mobs want nothing more than to be in melee with you, and the other 10% don’t even try harder than stepping 2 feet to “get away”. So your gap closers and cripples are boring, and you have basically 1 combo field that you can use to self combo while soloing. Couple this with most weapons having high auto attack damage and abilities like “does a small amount of damage and applies 4% vulnerability”, or “does a small amount of damage and buffs you to do more damage for a very small amount of time”, along with many, many slot skills and traits that are “use this and do more damage for X time”. It just ends up to be a /yawn with no depth in solo pve. I rank necro lower because they are similar to warriors in that they have a lot of abilities that cripple or vulnerability on use, yet don’t have the crazy damage that warriors do. Axe, dagger, and scepter main hand are basically auto attack and use #2 to deal more damage and/or cripple. Staff is cast some marks then put it back in your bag for 2 hours.

The top half is basically there due to the added depth/interactivity of self combo fields and/or weapon switching.

Out of the ones I have tried:

Elementalist (PvE)
Thief (PvP)
Warrior (Both)
Ranger was really boring for both

“meta” this, “meta” that. Please stop saying the word “meta”.

I find Necromancer to be the most enjoyable for both PvP (tournaments) and PvE (explorer dungeons).
I’ve played most of the classes to lvl 20+ either during the beta or after release. Also played every class in sPvP.

My 5 classes in order of enjoyability are Engineer, Guardian, Warrior, Ranger, Mesmer

Engineer (80): super fun, indestructable, complex to master
Guardian(55): fun, can be defensive or offensive, interesting fights with moderate complexity
Warrior (72): Kind of fun, nice to steamroll stuff but can get boring
Ranger (45): Kind of boring, just send pet and hit a couple of bow skills, still playing around with this one to see if I can get some complexity out of it.
Mesmer (8): Hmm, I’m not sure about casters, they are so incredibly weak, glass cannons by nature but Anet did not seem to compensate them, they aren’t balanced in having higher dps than other classes since they are weak. Mesmer is fun though, I just need to get the hang of it and I have a feeling they will become much more fun.

Ele + engi for all game modes. Have been playing those since the first BWE and still like them best. Both are easy to start out with but have a lot of versatility, interesting class mechanics and are difficult to master.

Guardian and Engineer.

The other 3 are Mesmer, Thief and Necromancer, but I just keep going back to Guardian and Engineer, both are just so much fun and complement each other well.

I have to disagree strongly, my Guardian (who on topic, is my most enjoyable), plays nothing like my thief at all(again on topic, my second favorite at the moment), and my Engineer feels totally different again.

The similarities with move types, whirls, blasts, projectiles etc. and the various combo fields is intentional and a system I particularly enjoy.

Yeah there is enough variety for 2 or 3 classes. It’s just extremely bland when compared to other games in the genre. I really dislike how you can’t build a character in GW2, you work with very limited presets. There is more depth to 1 class in GW1 than all of GW2 combined. There is a shockingly small number of skills and so many of them are boring.

I only play a warrior and I love it. To see his combat animations is pure fun, if all the rest put aside. Jump up and on the ground and see them flying, kick him in the kitten and see him flying, knock him with the rifle and see him flying. Stick a banner in the ground, throw bolas, and on top I can transform in a snow leopard and disappear, just enough to steal the champion’s chest and run away. Oh and to see the drake spiting fire only to block it with a shield.. priceless. Good work on this profession, Anet, (clap, clap).

Guild wars should be war between orders, because orders are guilds too.

I’ve levelled a warrior to 80, followed by my ranger. I have an engineer at 20 as well as a mesmer.

Warrior I absolutely love, but you have to make sure you change it up frequently and experiment with different weapons and builds. I started out, as so many do, a fan of the greatsword, but now I love hammer and axe/warhorn. There’s a lot of depth to warrior that it’ll take me a long time to explore.

My ranger I knew I was going to like, but for a while, between say 30-60, it got a little boring.
But once I specialised her build and went for conditions and vitality, she became incredibly fun to play. She’s 25/25/0/0/20, which sure, is probably complete pants for dungeon play, but with my favourite weapons being sword & torch / shortbow, she absolutely annihilates general PvE mobs with insanely high DoT from her conditions, especially when backed up by pets that also cause bleeding.
Adjusting to a ranger that is primarily melee has definitely taken getting used to, but it’s so fun

I’ll also add that I found the longbow pretty uninspired and flacid, both on warrior and ranger, much preferring the rapid fire rate of the shortbow on ranger and the punch of the rifle on warrior.

Of the two twenties I’ve got, engineer & mesmer, engineer has caught my attention more but still seems to be lacking a certain something I can’t quite put my finger on.

And mesmer is so completely different to the mesmer I played in the first game, I’m having real problems liking it. I think that may be down to the class performing best when you know there’s a real person on the receiving end, and I’m not really comfortable taking him into PvP quite yet.
I also find illusions fiddly and irritating, and to have them be the major focus of the class is a bit of a letdown. It’s a great shame the Domination line from the first game hasn’t translated to GW2 in any meaningful way. Mesmer was best when wrapping the enemy up in a trap of their own creation, and I just don’t get that feeling in GW2.
That old “Darned if you do, darned if you don’t” attack of Feedback, Wastrel’s Worry and Wastrel’s Demise just doesn’t have a GW2 equivalent.

Please note that due to restrictions placed on my account, I am only allowed 1 post per hour.

I haven’t tried anything other then Thief yet as I only started this game a week ago, and I am having a blast. (I use more then 1 button that’s for sure.)

I will test more Profs, probably Guardian after, not sure yet.

I agree about GW1 but most other games in the genre there’s usually 1 spec to rule them all aka cookie cutter build per class, maybe 2 or 3 if the class can viably take on multiple roles. Or when looking at the number of skills, they might have 30+ skills available per class but more often than not like half of those skills are used 1x per week situationally and the majority sticks to the same boring rotation that some respected players have parced to be most viable. If the game offer macro’s and/or add-ons this is usually even reduced to 1 button “rotations” for most fights and in some fights maybe 5 other skills situationally used to counter something. This all while standing still for the majority of fights or just occasionally repositioning to avoid AoE’s / other boss skills that are too strong to be healed through.
I prefer the GW2 system but to each their own.

Necro for me. Varied play style for PVE. Excellent DoT damage for ranged play style and fun combos for melee if/when your target shakes off your ranged barrage. They also have higher surviveability with my play style compared to an elementalist.

Ranger, Engineer, Guardian, Warrior, Thief…..but kind of a toss-up for the Ranger / Engineer for first place. I can solo 5 levels above mine with my Ranger, but Engineers are just fun to play…especially in a group. Almost lets me play a Healer again, lol.

Ok….deleted the Thief for an Elementalist…my new favorite, I think.

Thief

For PvP:

Elementalist is also fun in both, but only level 10. Will be buying more character slots, enough for all professions. As each one is unique and has something appealing about it.

The three classes i like most. But after playing hours and hours I realize its all about onebutton and same short rotations..

Why do that to yerself? If you’re finding one build boring, switch it up, Lyssa knows you have the choices ta do so. So what if you think one build is “the haxor wingbang insta win”, if it’s not fun then ya need to find another build that is fun. The game shouldn’ be about “how fast can I kill monsters?” but, “how much fun can I have while doin’ it?”. When I get bored with one build I jus’ toss in a different Weapon, switch my Skills around ta something new, and play with my Traits to add a different dressing and there ya go. I’m always finding some new combo that’s fun to play out an’ see where it’ll take me … ya can’t stick with the same one-shot build for 50+ levels and then blame the game that the class feels samey; try mixing your flavors.

I’m sorry I stepped outta yer box, don’ worry, if
ya whine enough they’ll put me right back.

Note I am a PvE only player.

Of the professions I have played a reasonable amount of time with:

Elementalist is my favourite. This character has clocked over 350 hours of my 390 hours of playtime. I have always played support, healing, or CC oriented casters or hybrids in all previous games, and Elementalist gives me the ability to do all that while being fun for me to play.

I recognize the weakness and bugs, but the profession is still enjoyable enough for me to stick with it.

I haven’t played Guardian as extensively as I should, but my opinion thus far is mixed. It’s a good profession, but I’m not really into the “frontline melee” type play that Guardian is best at. Excellent support capabilities, so it still appeals to me enough to want to build one up.

Mesmer in BWE3 was excellent. I’m quite disappointed with Mesmer in the live release. Maybe at or near cap it’ll be better, but I do not enjoy playing this profession at this time.

Ranger I’ve only recently started, and I like it so far.

The other four I have not played:

Engineer seems interesting, and looks like a difficult to master but quite effective when you do profession. I made one, but have not played it past the tutorial as of yet.

Necromancer, Thief, and Warrior (mostly, support oriented Warrior does mildly appeal) do not appeal to my personality and playstyle. I may play them in the future for completion sake, but they are not professions that I would immediately flock to.

PvE: Ranger (the pet and the pet skills makes all the difference)
sPvP: Mesmer, Thief, Engineer (trickery, mobility, versatility)
Worlds PvP: Ranger, Mesmer (the pet is great to go behind enemy lines, and the Mesmer has some fun AoE boons that are great for massive combat, like Mass Invisibility, Feedback, and Signet of Inspiration)

Guardian is a really fun profession, but it needs more ranged options for my likening
Warrior is very powerful, but it’s also way too simple for my taste
Necromancer I will probably play in sPvP when the other professions get a little boring, but the “master of death” aesthetic is a turn off for me
