Greetings!

I’m having a bit of trouble picking my profession. I used to play a Mesmer/Warrior in Guild wars 1 and now that I bought Guild wars 2 I made a Mesmer straight away since I thought it would be a natural choice for me. However I have noticed that the way mesmer works in Guild Wars 2 is lacking somehow. Maybe its the fact I used to play a Mesmer/Warrior combo? The profession seems somewhat weak and the abilities even though funny lack the power to kill enemies. Should I make some other profession or stick with the mesmer? Is the mesmer better later on or is there a profession that resembles the Mesmer/Warrior combo from Guild wars 1? I’m at level 14 with my mesmer at the moment.

Mesmer is better when you get higher level, due to traits.

Fair warning though, Mesmer has to work a lot harder than a Warrior to be effective.

A lot of your damage is going to be reliant on your clones/illusions, not direct damage like other professions.

If you are trying to just do full out physical damage like in GW1, it won’t work. While Greatsword and Sword/Pistol are nice damage dealers, your main power source is coming from your shatters as well. A Staff Mesmer can dish out some pain with a full clone/illusion bar and working those shatters, but you gotta utilize them. Otherwise you’re only doing half of what you are capable of.

And don’t just leave your clones/illusions there as “henchmen” either. Bust those bad boys up with Mind Wrack and Cry of Frustration to dish out some hurt. It helps to spec into reduced cooldowns to get the most of it as well. You could easily take down mass groups of mobs with a good shatter build and proper placement in seconds.

As we all know, Mesmers are the superior profession amongst all professions. Nothing is better than they are. So don’t give up on it! Once you master it, you can join the rest of the high-class awesomeness and know how much better you are than everyone else.

Mesmers are godlike in every single aspect of the game.

Wanna do a dungeon? Looking for Mesmer!
Wanna go zerg in WvW? Does anyone have a portal mesmer?
Wanna roam solo in WvW? Prepare to meet some mesmers.

Well, I kind of lied. Because they aren’t that good in solo farming PvE. But not many people actually do that after level 80.

Umpf!.? Mesmers weak?! they aren’t.

But when you’re not aure what to pick, try engineer.
It’s a hard to play class. It’s darn complicated, we’re (still) kind of buggy (about 5 traits STILL not working), we nee ALOT of tweaking, etc.

It can only get better with an engineer

But seriously, Guardian combines magic and melee really well. You can use a staff/wand but aswell kick some butts around with hour hammer.

Not that this is much help, but I haven’t found a class yet I don’t enjoy playing. Admittedly, I haven’t made a warrior yet, but as a person who avoided melee roles in GW1, I’ve really enjoyed my Guardian, and even play melee on my Ranger and Ele, just as examples.

My personal suggestion is make a toon of a profession and give it a whirl. Buy the various weapons it can use, and test them all out. You’ll get a feeling fairly quickly if you like that profession or not (since the weapons are the fundamentals imho and utility skills and traits just make the profession better as opposed to making the profession).

You might be surprised at what you find you end up with! And good luck!
