What are the Devs playing?
Only one that I know for sure is that Robert Hrouda (Content Designer) mains as a Ranger, with a Hyena called Sir Chompers and a Devourer named Captain Snips. :P
Goal: To have one character of every race, gender, and armor class combination at level 80.
Current progress: Human 4/6 | Charr 1/6 | Norn 1/6 | Sylvari 1/6 | Asura 1/6 | Total: 8/30
They must be playing it.
And if not casually, then at least to test things out.
And even if that is not so, then what WAS their favorite profession?
Devs let us know! I can’t be the only one curious about that
Only relevant thing I can give you is this. From the big man himself… well hes not that big but you know the phrase.
Not sure if what he plays, but seeing what he thinks is the most challenging is interesting. I would have never guessed it.
Interesting!
He clearly states ‘imo’. Other devs may think different. As all players do too.
Seen this picture before somewhere, if I recall correclty during BWE 2 or 3.
To clear up a possible misinterpretation from my post: I’m not trying to find out what a dev think is the best profession.
I’m wondering what their favorite profession, or as we call ‘main’, is.
That is something different and says nothing about what they think is the best profession.
As long as we make that clear, I don’t see any reason why they would not tell us.
Sooooo…. Devs?
As long as we make that clear, I don’t see any reason why they would not tell us.
I can think of a few reasons. All of them have to do with the way players interpret and overanalyze every single thing a Developer says, to the point of paranoia. If a Dev says his main is a Thief, you can be absolutely sure a lot of players are going to blame him if they have a problem with Thieves in PVP. Ditto for any other given option.
“That Dev plays Elementalist? Well she obviously isn’t doing her job, because our profession sucks.” That sort of thing.
Obviously not all of us are going to respond this way, but the risk is probably too high to justify too many Devs openly taking about their gaming habits.
The above quote kind of makes sense considering the three professions he lists are the scholar professions. I wonder if its intentional that the scholars take the most practice and heavy thinking to get good mileage, while adventurers are a good balance between ease of use and difficulty, and soldiers are straight forward. Would make sense and explain much. I’ve noticed I get a lot of great mileage out of my elementalist and my necromancer when I figure out the perfect combo for a given situation.

You are right about that.
But, I expect and hope the majority of our community doesn’t do that. Most of us are wise enough not to overanalize what their main is. Again, it’s not about what they think the best profession is, it’s what they find the most fun profession to play with, without disregarding the other ones as less good or whatever.
Just like you and me, we have a main, but do I think the other professions are worse? No of course not, just not my playstyle.
I also hope and expect that the minority that does overanalize that, gets corrected by the majority of the community that understands that their main is nothing to overanalize.
I think the community is that far.
Let’s see?
I’m pretty certain that I saw Jon Peters playing a warrior last week.
Pretty sure they all play mages. :P
@Bast Bow
Wishful thinking. I cannot count the posts I’ve seen today where someone said “Well, insert dev in charge of balancing classes here (forgot his name) loves warriors, so they won’t get nerfed. Ever”

Wasn’t that Tigole in WoW?

I’m probably the definition of an alt-aholic, but for the moment, my main is a Ranger. I love running around with my pet spider exploring different areas.
You should tell them to please fix spirits Dalmarus
I really want to play a viable spirit ranger.
Myrmidons of Kryta (MOK)
Blackgate Server
When I was a kid, I worked at Dunkin Donuts. I never ever ate Dunkin Donuts.
That said, I found it completly baffling when Mr. Hrouda admitted to being a dungeon designer AND a ranger. How is that pet treating you in Twilight Arbor Robert? Fun to hit stow and have it…you know..not stow? Ah well I use it kill myself repeatedly and hope the bounce wastes my group also!
Is there any real reason the pet stow command doesn’t work? Vertical changes, fall damage, zoning, all lead to it coming back. Is this intentional?
80 Engineer / 80 Guardian
80 Necro / 80 Thief
Someone in my guild killed a Dev in WvWvW (or a Community Team member, not sure there’s a way to tell the difference). They were a Thief. And they were dead. Muwahahahaha!

we got the same taste
jungle spider is my spider
but it can’t handle some jumps…he’s like “dude, i ain’t going nowhere -_-” ?_?
“Only the finest of potatoes in my zerkburgers.”
@ CC Dalmarus: Thanks for sharing! Happens to be my main to.
@ Kyias, Naginto and andybmcc: Let’s not demotivate the devs for sharing by jumping on them what to improve because they happen to enjoy a certain profession… Please.
There are other parts in this forum that provide the oppertunity for you to provide constructive feedback on how to improve the gameplay and they read those posts too.
This post is just for them to let us know what profession they like and play the most, without us jumping to conclusions or letting them know what to improve.
Any other devs want to share?

On twitch they almost always are playing Guardians, and usually seem depressed when forced to play something else.
JP knows Necros are far from the strongest, if anything he just listed the opposite of the truth in perfect order.
What he said was pretty clear.
Necro>Ele>Mesmer>Engi in terms of how hard they are to play.
Not balance.
Ah, I see my mistake, for some reason I read that as ratio of skill vs reward/success.

Take into account this was said during a Beta Weekend Event (2nd or 3d, don’t recall). There has been a lot of twitching/nerving/adding/removing since that time.
And indeed, it says nothing about best/worst profession.

Not really.
Utilities and traits are pretty much 90% the same.
Just different balance situation. I say that list is still solid.
You must be a sadist if your main is a ranger. Then again it does not sound like you are pvping to see how poorly designed the pets are.
Any other devs want to tell us what profession they like playing most these days?
