What are your essential inventory items?
The MOST important Item I have is the Home-Portal Stone.. I use it 50+ times a day.. It’s excellent for so many things, like gotta run to the restroom but you’re in some crazy map away from a waypoint? Might get killed while away? Port over to your home, then jump back to your spot when you get back to the computer. (800 Gems)
Other than that I’d say the Copper-fed Salvage-o-Matic and Mystic Salvage kits for rares/exotics.. Black Lion kits for gear you want to keep your rune/sigils from.. Endless Tonics, Flying Carpet, Seaweed Salad & various Utility foods.
Mostly the Home-Portal Stone is the best Item I own. After that would be Watch-work Mining Pick and Salvage-o-matic.
I always carry a mystic salvage kit and the hall of monuments stone.
flute and spy kits
Apart from the givens (salvage kits and gathering tools) a tree tonic, witch broom from the witch outfit, and dragonite ore to feed Princess.
Aside from the usual of copperfed salvage kit and harvesting tools, a permanent bank access and a Royal Terrace Pass.
The permanent bank access allows me to open up my bank from wherever I am whenever I want and is hands down the most convenient item I have. The Pass is useful to go directly to Divinities Reach to a site with eveything I need without opening up the map and searching for that waypoint. (and that place is way more convenient than Lions Arch).
ANet may give it to you.

For a free alternative to the portal stone, you can just enter the PvP lobby.

Yeah, another advantage of the Home portal is that you can gather if you have nodes.

Another free alternative is a Hall of Monuments Portal Stone, available to everyone and “sold” at no cost in Lions Arch by a Skritt merchant in the cave in the north west corner. It takes you to the HoM (right besides a portal to Lions Arch) and back again to where you were.
ANet may give it to you.
Keys… oh keys -.- lol (like zephyrite lockpicks), Mystic Salvage Kit, BL Salvage Kit, Bank Express, Trading Express, Merchant Express, Repair Canister, Rev Orb, Perma Mystic Forge Conduit, all my various weapons for different areas of the game, various boosts, potions, food and other buffs, Witch’s Broom, Box o’ Fun, Common Clothing Tonic, Endless Toymaker Tonic, Pirate Sword, Endless Blue Quaggan Tonic, Maize Balm, Tele to Friend, Aether Keys. HoMS. Banners like Hero and Gathering etc.
LOL… I actually didn’t realize I had so much… the toys and stuff are for GM gatherings and world boss waits. I do have 128 slots thank god.
Guild: Creators of Destiny Awakening [CDA] Disabled GW2 gamer; love all aspects of GW2!

I think the only things I consider essential are a Mystic Salvage Kit and any spare weapons I use regularly (e.g. my ele uses two daggers most of the time, but also carries a staff).
My characters usually have some other junk in their bags, my main has a whole heap of consumables, tonics, toys etc. but I wouldn’t sy any of that is essential.
“Life’s a journey, not a destination.”
Coper and Silver fed
Home stone
Trading Post
Mystic Forge
Bank
Keys and all those annoying items that anets keeps shoving down my throat when I try to run new maps ¬¬
My harvesting tools, my copper fed, mystic kit, BL kit, and food/ utilities. Everything else is fodder.
Unlucky since launch, RNG isn’t random
PugLife SoloQ
Same as almost everyone, salvaging and harvesting tools and all different kinds of keys. Other than that, I usually have blue and green luck in my inventory, as I only consume them when I have a full stack to save me an amount of clicking.
I’m a bit surprised though that nobody said food and utility buffs yet? Currently I’m using all the stuff I got from Halloween.
re: I usually have blue and green luck in my inventory, as I only consume them when I have a full stack to save me an amount of clicking. – They recently added a “consume all” option to the right-click menu for essence of luck.(But only essence of luck, unfortunately.)
On the characters without the permanent versions, multiple salvage kits usually basic and master. A replacement set of gathering tools. All the weapons my character can wield and aren’t currently slotted. Food buffs depending on planned activities.
RIP City of Heroes
Salvage o Matic, Mystic salvage kit, 5 food sorts (3 power, 2x condi), All key sorts, Permanent merchant, permanent black lion merchant, permanent hair style contract (more fun then I expected xd), Permanent back contract, Home portal stone, Royal terrace Or Airship pass (I used both, but only one per character, switch em around sometimes). Mawdrey, princess and the other one.
Took a long while to farm all of this (especially permanent contract) but I have no regrets. Especially bank contract is great for inventory managing.
No excuse anymore for not giving ‘hide mounts’-option
No thanks to unidentified weapons.
Salvage kit(s), food, possible gear swaps, and any map specific keys I need. With all the loot that pours out of HoT, anything else would be a waste of space.
Home Portal Stone, Copper Fed Salvage Kit and Infinite Gathering Tools are your best investments in the Gem store.
Food, Tele To A Friend, Bank Access, Repair Canisters for high level fractals, Revive Orbs and now with Masteries, XP boosters.
Merchant and Trading Post are mostly convenience.

FYI for others:
The same services (port to safe spot; return to previous location) are available for free from the Hall of Monuments Portal Stone (vendors are in LA and listed on the wiki page).
Another option: WvW. WvW contains quick and free access to the Bank, Crafting Stations, Merchants, etc. And you can return for free to the PvE spot you left once you’re done.
The guild hall is perfect for afking too.

I know, but I still save up to a full stack. That way I don’t have to use many ‘consume all’ on smaller amounts like 20 or 30 every time I salvage stuff, but only once on the full stack.
HoM stone, spare tools and salvage kits, food/utilities, 250 jars of bees, and the Nuhoch Warbler so I can make fart noises over unskippable NPC chatter
Royal Terrace Pass~!
Yak’s Bend FO LYFE [AI] [AGI]
minipets will be the death of me
Silver Fed Salvage-o-Matic, a lot of endless tonics, experimental rifles/teleportation guns, different weapons for different occasions, keys/crowbars/machetes for opening stuff.
Learn to Dance Vol 1
I’ll stop in the middle of a raid to go get it from my other chars if it isnt with me.
My airship ticket. I use it at least 6 times for my daily stuff and many more times throughout the day. I should probably get myself a home portal stone. I also carry my copper-fed, salvage kits, a bunch of food items, fun tonics and toys, ley line extractor and my HoT currencies ‘cus I’m too lazy too keep storing them in my bank. I never really know which map I’ll be doing and I don’t want to loose my spot in that certain map once I find out that I forgot the curencies.
noone has mentioned Executioner’s Axe Toy yet! :P
a long range charge on a 2 second cooldown, its effected by swiftness too.
the ultimate tool for getting around quickly.
Basic and Rare salvage kits, thats it.
Pocket mystic forge.
Stack of mystic forge stones (to use pocket mystic forge to make more mystic kits)
Mystic salvage kit
Zone keys (bleh)
Ley-Energy matter converter (because I don’t remember I’m out of keys until I’m out of keys, so I use it as an emergency key so I can hit that chest and then buy keys in stead of the other way around.)
“Serious” stat consumables
Other foods/consumables I pick up for when I don’t want to use my ‘serious’ ones but still want xp buffs.
Collection of res orbs/combat boosters just in case things get serious. (because having them in the bank always means not having them when I need them)
At least 100 bandit’s improvised bombs.
At least 10 ash legion spy kits.
At least 5 fire elemental powder.
All of my utility and stat infused amulets (so I can change buffs on the fly)
Backup pistol (because certain fights have shields/knockbacks that prevent properly using deathblossom, and pistol/dagger is better condi DPS than shortbow in those cases)
I used to carry around a hom portal stone, but then we got a guild hall and I didn’t need it any more.
