Charr. Charr for everything.
Except mesmer. The salads can have that I guess.
Elementalist: Asura
Engineer: Asura
Guardian: Asura
Mesmer: Asura
Necromancer: Asura
Ranger: Asura
Thief: Asura
Warrior: Asura
Hmm, In my opinion:
Elementalist: Human/Asura
Engineer: Asura/Charr
Guardian: Norn/Human
Mesmer: Human/Sylvari
Necromancer: Sylvari/Charr
Ranger: Sylvari/Charr
Thief: Human/Asura
Warrior: Charr/Norn

Guardian: – Human/Norn
Mesmer: – Asura/Human
Necromancer: – Human/Sylvari
Ranger: – Norn/Sylvari
Thief: – Human/Sylvari
Warrior: – Charr/Norn
PS – Sorry, but I couldn’t choose just one.

I’m just thankful ArenaNet didn’t answer this question for us.
I’m just thankful ArenaNet didn’t answer this question for us.
You mean when they scrapped the idea for having different stats for different races?
Anyway, my feelings would be:
Elementalist: Human/Asura
Engineer: Charr/Asura
Guardian: Human/Norn
Mesmer: Human/Sylvari
Necromancer: Human/Sylvari
Ranger: Sylvari/Norn
Thief: Human/Charr
Warrior: Charr/Norn
Not really looked into it that much yet myself but I think human Engi is good because you get an extra AOE heal in the F-Key options for Prayer For Dwayna.
I do know that Norn get NO summon Elites only transforms so perhaps a class that has 1 might be a good idea for some situations.
Human pretty much fits everything. They basically have a god that matches them all apart from engineer.
Elementalist: Norn, Asura
Engineer: Charr, Asura kind of but they seem more magic tech and the aesthetic matches the Charr more
Guardian: Sylvari maybe, but they seem like mostly a human class
Mesmer: Sylvari, Asura
Necromancer: Sylvari, Asura. I for some reason have always associated the Sylvari with Mes and necro despite the cheerful innocents (even before I knew about
Traherne). It just matches plant people to me though I think Syl necros are actauly meant to be rare.
Ranger: Norn, Sylvari
Thief: Charr, Sylvari
Warrior: Charr, Norn.

Human is the only necessary race in the game.. The others are just human-wannabe’s. GW1 worked well without them anyway.

Weird thing: I really liked that GW1 gave you cultural options, instead of having you pick your species. Yet, when given the option to play something other than human, I’ll as often as not pick it.
Elementalist: pretty much every race.
Engineer: Charr
Guardian: Humans
Mesmer: Sylvari, Human, Asura
Necromancer: every race
Ranger: Norn, Charr
Thief: every race except Norn maybe
Warrior: every race except Asura

[DKJ] – Jade Quarry
Elementalist: Norn, because of their nature worship.
Engineer: Charr, I mean just look at Black Citadel!
Guardian: Humans because of their do-goody self righteousness.
Mesmer: Humans, generally high-powered magic users, more than any other race
Necromancer: Humans, typical of them to play ‘god’(s!).
Ranger: Norn, Human or Sylvari, each has an element of living off the land and exploration.
Thief: Human, small and agile plus devious enough.
Warrior: Norn, Human and Charr all have cultures of might = right.
Yep, no place for Asura. They really have a society and technology which is off the scale compared to the other 8 species. If they buttonhole themselves into a particular adventurer class, it is out of curiosity. In reality, Asura I consider Asura to be a complete class on their own.
Elementalist: Human
Engineer: Charr
Guardian: Sylvari/Human
Mesmer: Human
Necromancer: Asura
Ranger: Sylvari
Thief: Sylvari
Warrior: Charr
I’ve got a followup question for those of you who answered TC’s question. Do your characters follow the pairings in your lists?
Elementalist: Human
Engineer: Asura / Charr
Guardian: Human
Mesmer: Asura
Necromancer: Sylvari
Ranger: Sylvari / Norn
Thief: Human
Warrior: Charr / Norn
My main characters are reflected by my list above. My alts…not so much.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
These opinions in most cases don’t reflect my actual characters, but from a lore perspective, this is what I think fits best:
Elementalist: Asura and Human
Engineer: Charr
Guardian: Human
Mesmer: Human (and perhaps Asura, though I see Ele/Necro being more fitting)
Necromancer: Sylvari and Asura
Ranger: Sylvari and Norn
Thief: Human and Charr (Ash Legion)
Warrior: Charr and Norn
Two of my characters fit this (Human Ele, Charr Thief) and three don’t (Norn Necro, Asura Guardian, Human Engie).
Elementalist: Sylvari
Engineer: Sylvari
Guardian: Sylvari
Mesmer: Sylvari
Necromancer: Sylvari
Ranger: Sylvari
Thief: Sylvari
Warrior: Sylvari
Or my slightly less biassed views:
Elementalist: Asura
Engineer: Asura/Charr
Guardian: Human
Mesmer: Sylvari
Necromancer: ? – none really, human possibly, charr maybe.
Ranger: Norn
Thief: Sylvari
Warrior: Human/Charr
As for my characters, all are sylvari except a human guardian and asura engineer
Necromancer: ? – none really, human possibly, charr maybe.
I’m of the same mind. While several of the races make acceptable necromancers, none of the really stand out as one. I’m hoping an expansion race fits the bill down the line, because I’m really wanting to roll one.
Elementalist: Sylvari/Norn/Human
Engineer: Asura/Charr/Human
Guardian: Human/Norn
Mesmer: Human/Sylvari
Necromancer: Norn/Sylvari/Human
Ranger: All
Thief: All
Warrior: Norn/Human/Charr
IMHO (note, the ones in italic are the race/profession combinations used in the novels):
Elementalist: Asura, human, sylvari
Engineer: Asura, Charr
Guardian: Human, Norn
Mesmer: Human, Sylvari
Necromancer: Human, Sylvari
Ranger: Norn, Human, Sylvari, Charr
Thief: Sylvari, human, asura
Warrior: _Charr , human, norn
Two notes… personally I don’t see sylvari as a race fitting much of the necromancer profession, but mostly added it because two main chars in both one of the novels and in the game (Kileen and Trahearne) are sylvari necromancers.
As for my chars… I usually try to actually make combinations that are weird. My three mains right now are a sylvari guardian, a norn mesmer (male with the “kinda fat” body style and wearing fancy clothes) and an asura warrior..
wrapped up in some crazy ritualist hoo-ha from Cantha.
A real grab bag of ‘you can’t hurt me. They’re called Guardians.
Yep, no place for Asura. They really have a society and technology which is off the scale compared to the other 8 species.
The thing I love about Asura is how they just seemlessly combine magic and technology like it’s all just part of the same thing. Makes for some really interesting lore.
Elementalist: Asura/Human
Engineer: Charr/Asura
Guardian: Human/Norn
Mesmer: Human/Norn
Necromancer: Human/Sylvari
Ranger: Any (All races probably have some form of providing hunter)
Thief: Any (What society is free of thieves?)
Warrior: Any (All races most likely have warriors to defend their kingdoms, it’s the backbone of an army)
I’m quite confused by the people that actually dont say “all” on the 3 bottom ones.
It doesn’t matter that much, they all are cosmetic with very little racial differences. The only thing that changes race wise is “My Story”, sort of. Just makes balancing the game easier and provides an outlet for those who need to customize characters
Hi there! I might be dragging a dead thread from it’s grave, but I’m interested in these kinds of topics! (:
There is some lore in place that makes some profession/race combinations odd or rare in context of the majority of the race.
Elementalist: Humans, Asura, Sylvari, Charr
Charr Elementalists would be approached with caution by other charr. In general, the Charr don’t really trust magic. (This is due to the Flame/Gold Legion assaulting the other High Legions).
Engineer: Charr, Human, Asura
Pretty self-explanatory. With the Charr’s industrial revolution, they’ve somewhat coined the engineering profession single-handedly. Asura have their golems and other structures, and Human’s are technologically advanced as well (though not like the Charr)
Guardian: Human, Sylvari, Norn,
Humans are self-explanatory (ex. Logan Thackeray). Sylvari are “noble” creatures, and their intentions are pure, excluding the Nightmare Court of course. Norn are a spiritual people, and perhaps through communicating with the Spirits of the Wild they are “blessed” with special defensive magics.
Mesmer: Human, Sylvari, Asura(?)
Humans again are self-explanatory. With the human queen being a mesmer, I’m sure many people are wanting to learn mesmer magics. Sylvari and Asura are two of the more “magical” races, especially Sylvari.
Necromancer: Human, Sylvari, Norn (?)
While many humans look down on the practice of necromancy in GW2 era Tyria (probably because of all the undead terrorizing their livelihoods), still some humans could practice it. There are priest’s of Grenth still in-game, and Grenth is the god of death after all. Sylvari are perhaps the most curious about death among the races. Not that they are seeking to die as soon as they can, but they wonder about necromancy and see its value (Also, Trahearne is a necromancer). Norn is a bit of a stretch, but with the Spirits of the Wild they can be seen as close to the Mists/Underworld I suppose.
Ranger: Human, Norn, Charr, Sylvari
Plenty of human rangers in the universe (ex. Aidan). Norn are hunters, and with assistance from Snow Leopard could be formidable ranged foes. Charr rangers could have a place in the Ash Legion as marksman, and Sylvari are the most attuned to nature.
Thief: Human, Charr, Asura
As part of human character creation, you can choose to have grown up on the streets, which thieving would probably be essential to survival. With the Charr, Ash Legion thieves are very common. Asura have been known to steal other’s plans. Whether for a golem, gate, or other construction.
Warrior: Any
Warriors are pretty typical. When you look at the Vigil as a whole, pretty much every race is represented there. Charr of course would most likely lead the numbers in Warrior’s due to their warlike upbringing and culture, but any race could be a part of their city’s security force, or the Vigil.
And that is my 2 cents! If anyone wants to add/subtract or debate something please respond. Let’s keep threads like this going!
Much love. Play on.

For a giggle you could have added yourself under necromancer
Would you like some hard cheeze with your sad whine?
I believe the question should be…what race would a class have to be, to actually USE their racial skills. As a charr ranger, i already have a moving backwards dodge (lightning reflexes) so i wouldn’t use the hidden pistol much.
Humans have several useful racials, a elite transform to grenth form that would cripple/poison all nearby foes (engineer or thief roamer?), a prayer that removes conditions (engineer has low condition removal). Perhaps someone would use the hounds of balthazar pair for their jump finishers (summon a water field then hounds).
Sylvari has several root skills and summon allies (sylvan hound, turrets, druid spirit). So this is useful for a class that lacks ranged cc’s or good summons, such as…ranger?
Charr have a summon, a might shout, a dodge backwards attack, and a close range aoe nuke. Perhaps someone that cant naturally grant might to others or needs an extra dodge.
Asura racials..are odd, for a confusion stacker/melee there’s pain inverter, and several summons.
Norn racials are the transforms, a ranged bleed attack, and a summon that can’t move. Really all you’d use all the elite transforms, so where norn shines is providing speed buffs and stealth to those classes who dont naturally get it. (snow leopard) It’s annoying to see a roamer say..engineer go stealth then charge away.
Course, any race works with any class if you ignore the skills and just play what you think looks good. Or play what you think fits logically and makes you feel comfortable.

Format: What I have; what would also work, IMO.
Elementalist: human; asura
Engineer: charr; asura
Guardian: norn; human
Mesmer: human, asura, sylvari; —
Necromancer: asura; --
Ranger: norn; sylvari
Thief: sylvari; asura, human
Warrior: human; charr, norn
Any race would work with any profession and sometimes it might be nice to have an unexpected combo.
Elementalist: Human
Engineer: Charr
Guardian: Norn
Mesmer: Human
Necromancer: Asuran
Ranger: Sylvari
Thief: Asuran
Warrior: Norn
Elementalist: Human/Asura
Engineer: Asura/Charr/Human
Guardian: Human/Norn
Mesmer: Human/Asura/Norn
Necromancer: Norn/Asura/Human/Charr
Ranger: All but Asura
Thief: All but Norn
Warrior: Human/Norn/Charr
My 6:
Elementalist: Human Female
Engineer: Human Female
Guardian: Human Female
Mesmer: Norn Female
Necromancer: Human Male
Thief: Asura Male
What I want to have:
Ranger: Human Female
Warrior: Charr Male
Elementalist: Charr
Engineer: Asura
Guardian: Norn
Mesmer: Quagan in a tutu
Necromancer: Human
Ranger: Sylvari
Thief: Skritt
Warrior: Tengu
Well IMO human is the Best for every class, but better dont make a norm, i never saw a good looking norn + their horrible movement/animation
Elementalist: Human
Engineer: Asura
Guardian: Human (Ironically mine is a charr)
Mesmer: Asura (mostly because of asuran portals and stuff)
Necromancer: Sylvari
Ranger: Sylvari/Norn
Thief: Human
Warrior: Charr
Oh no! My guardian is Asura!
Well IMO human is the Best for every class, but better dont make a norm, i never saw a good looking norn + their horrible movement/animation
I only saw two or three good looking female Norns at the minster way point area in TC DR. But we are the RP capital, so people will make great efforts to make good looking Norn.
