Q:

I was being whispered vulgur language . Now i’m a big boy and i understand that it’s expected in competitive games. But considering the rating on GW2 it made me wonder.

I was being told that reporting players for verbal abuse that direct vulgur insults at me would actually get ME banned for abusing the report system. Is this true ? If so , then what is Verbal Abuse and when should we report players for it ?

Genuine question here.

A:

I take the “Verbal Abuse” report option with a pinch of salt (no pun intended xD). I much rather prefer the term used in GW1 which was “Offensive Language”, which brackets verbal abuse (something that has a direct target) as well as abuse that is more generalised and includes vulgarity.

Basically, anything that could be construed as offensive should be reported. You won’t be banned/punished if you report something that could be taken as offensive but wasn’t bad enough to be punished for, for example. Gaile later says further on in the thread something like this “If you’re not sure, report it and let the professionals decide”.

You can be punished if you go out of your way to report somebody who hasn’t done anything wrong though.

EDIT: A good rule of thumb is to consider people’s comments in a more realistic setting. Would you be taken aback if you were told this by somebody you just passed on the streets? Would you get stares if you said this to a 12 year old? The the age old rule of thumb: If it’s not something you’d happily say in front of your grandma/generic grandma-old-lady figure, don’t say it in public chat.

idk in direct response to your question, but I’d like a Hate Speech report option, apart from the Verbal Abuse one. there’s a lot of bigotry in map chats sometimes and it’s really awful.

If you don’t like it report it. It’s then up to ANet to determine if it crossed the line or not. They are the final arbitrators.

We are heroes. This is what we do!

Anything you didn’t want to be said to you that you wouldn’t say to your elderly grandmother, in church, is reportable.

Be careful what you ask for
ANet may give it to you.

I’d say if you think it’s offensive report it (although some people are easily offended).
Reports are handled by human moderators, they’ll be able to decide if it really is abuse or not.
Report. Block. Move on.

What Anet might ban you for is abusing the report function; for example if you don’t like a guy so you constantly send verbal abuse reports to Anet because the guy is talking about the weather.

However, if you feel like you’ve been abused verbally, then report it. Anet will NOT ban you for it. Even if Anet disagrees with you they will not ban you for it. Gaile has been very clear on this over the years.
