How do you determine how good another player is, or even yourself? Does it matter to you how good someone else is? Personally I look at it based off of experience as in knowledge and somewhat appearance though you can buy gold and therefore buy weapons armors and skins, but how do you “size people up?”

How good a player is is relative. What matters is that you keep getting better.

It only ever matters to me how good someone is if I’m supposed to rely on them, or they try to tell me what to do; otherwise, why should I care?

As for how I would go about getting an idea of how good they are: I’d watch what they did. Anybody can fake knowledge, or have fancy equipment, but skill is shown with actions.

You can test a good PvE player with a solo ( boss or a dungeon path)
You can test a good PvP player in small fights (2v2 or 1v1)
That’s the only way because there’s no skill based armor\weapons and ranks are meaningless because you can farm it by pressing 111 in hotjoin or wvw.

In general, I can’t say I care. For most of my adventures, we’re all in it together, so I support where I can, and take help when I need it.

Really, the only time I size people up is with commanders and mini-games that I’m good at. I know a good commander generally by the quality of, well, commands they’re giving. The tag gets my attention, but only demonstrating leadership will hold it.

As for mini-games, I’m more-than-usually good at Sanctum Sprint and the Clocktower, so I can size people up pretty well on those, based on their flow, speed, decision-making, etc. Since they’re essentially jumping-puzzle-based races, it’s pretty obvious sometimes who’s good and who isn’t.

If i have played with them before dooh. This is where PuGs come in. A gambe getting players in all size and colors. Excellent players are easy to spot. Average don’t stand out. And bad players are those that you would rather leave lying on the floor C:

If you asked what determines a skilled player in LA map chat, the usual answer would probably be “zerk armor and how good you dodge”. In reality, having true skill in this game is difficult because the game mechanics are overwhelmingly simple. There’s no real requirement to learn formulas, how to counter X with Y, what to do in every possible situation, what to cast and in what order ,and things like that. Instead you have just a few skills, locked weapon skills, some terrible to nice traits and an invulnerability button every few seconds, and that’s about it. One of the most complex mechanics in this game is combo fields and not so much.

The fact that you don’t even have to manage mana in this game, only cooldowns (while in other games you have to manage both mana and cooldowns), already sets the skill bar at a far lower level than usual.

Skill does factor heavily into PvP and WvW roaming fights especially, because that is the nature of PvP and even on simple mechanics it is still possible to heavily outskill your opponent by carefully selecting your gear, treats and utiltiy skills and making the right decisions at the right time. But for the most part, this is not what the game is designed for or balanced around in PvE or WvW zergs.

So the answer is, to know skill..you have to be with people in small skirmishes. Because in other areas of the game, facerolling all your buttons usually does the job.

If we’re talking about player skill:
If they can do most, if not all content properly and efficiently. Even if they are being a kitten or elitist about it.
