What did you do when you were new?
Oh this is super fun to read :D
I remember when i started playing I didn’t know I can jump so I always ran around fences and rocks.
Also i didn’t know you can swim in gw2 so I tried to avoid water so im not gonna die. xD
Good times!
Dyed a lvl 2 armor in black while still in pre searing, tough it was a normal dye.
Ooops!
(For anyone who’s never played Guild Wars 1 in that game dyes were single use. And black was about as rare and valuable as Abyss in GW2, even more so in pre-searing.)
Sadly at that time i tough pre searin was all that gw1 had that time, so we had to wait for more releases, so we could pregress in more new maps and story ark etc.
Irony… Anet releases that model in GW2 XD..
dammn.. this was in 2004 :\
I remember all my friends and I made charr characters once to start and check out that area. There was some NPC bad guy shaman that was literally killing everyone. I mean dead bodies all around the cave and for at least 15 feet, yet people kept going back to fight it … die and respawn.
I’m pretty mad they removed that event. I’m not one to play the “dumbing down the game” card, but it felt that way when that event was nixed.
/sniffleI remember the headstart. He turned it into a slaughter.
Used to be one of my favorite events. To actually have this powerful enemy in such a low level area. That’s the best description, perfect. Yeah i think it was during that 3 day headstart. It was in fact just a slaughter, bodies strewn about… players going in to help res down players … only to die, and back on release we are talking about hundreds of new players. I’ve never seen anything like that in all my gaming career, it was hilarious, yet addictive. Like a challenge that could not be won, but like the lemmings we are, we were determined to beat it.
Oh, man, I’m reminded of the bandit boss with the golem. Kessex, I believe. Or Bloodtide. I forget the specifics. It’s the event where you stop the bandits from stealing materials, so then the boss gets ticked and goes champ mode. Back in the day, it felt pretty epic.
Bodies everywhere, my friend and two others were running around trying to rez the legion of 20+ bodies on the floor (before the days of “dead WP” whinging), and with a few minutes of dodging and LoS’ing him, the map had rallied to finally take the boss out.

I got another one.
First world boss, Shadow Behemoth. That thing was scary to look at. I was just exploring the swamp and he totally took me by surprise. I was just a lowly lv15 thief. The immersion was that intense.
I know just the very first thing but that is stuck in my head.
I farmed any mob in the starting area of Metrica Province and sold any drops (t1 mats sold at first like crazy ’cause everyone was into a crafting discipline) till I had 25 silver and then bought my first 100 gems
(And I thought at that point “boy, 25s, the price will drop eventually”, ’cause it was 20s max in the last beta ><)
I wish I’d thought to buy gems with gold early on.
If I could go back knowing what I know now I’d have put all my gold (or silver) into gems and then traded it back after the first Halloween and the Lost Shores event when the price jumped up.
Although I don’t regret spending my first 24 silver on a mini Polar Bear. I’d tried every single year to get one in GW1 and never did, and realised that would probably be the first year I wouldn’t be farming it, so making it my first GW2 mini seemed a good ‘consolation prize’.

Jump off Rata Sum and kill myself over and over again like a mad man.
The thing I remember most clearly is my first warrior and the personal story (it was a Charr). I had to fight a veteran skale underwater but for the life of me couldn’t outdamage its regeneration and kept dying and dying. It went so far I deleted the character out of frustration. xD
Also, taking weeks to level up with my first character (a Norn elementalist). For the life of me, I don’t know how I managed to take so long.
And then there’s going into Orr the first time (back when Risen were really kitten enemies that could really screw you over, especially the ravagers). It was an actual adrenaline rush back then, walking around in that dead and godforsaken land. Going into Magus Falls (unfortunately otherwise known as the Heart of Maguuma these days; unfortunately because I like the name Magus Falls infinitely more and that’s what it was actually called the first 3 years of the game) during the betas and right after launch brought that adrenaline rush back again.
I remember on my 3rd day, finally going past Queensdale into Kessex and doing Draithor’s event with a lot of people. We died a lot.
I also was taken with the look of Garrenhoff and the Wizard’s Tower (Even as I was a GW1 Veteran); I even based a D&D campaign on that little town. Lovely <3.
When I was new, I immediately went to the eye of the north to get my Guild Wars earned items. From playing GW since the first month it started, it was a pretty simple transfer to learning. When I discovered there were jumping puzzles in the game I was ecstatic! I had not seen a JP for years until GW2. I remade my beta characters, and now have 27 characters. I guess I really like GW2
Matron Kaldona Kye, Mesmer GW since launch.
Matron Kaldona Kye, Sylvari Chronomancer GW2 since closed Beta.
Just a week after launch, I had managed to save together 2 gold. 2 GOLD! This is back when t6 mats were 10 copper and gems were 30 silver for 400…
I could have invested…I could have started myself on a path of rich glory — but no!
After completing a couple cow-defending events in Diessa Plateau, I came across a “cattlepult.” Chuckling at the name, I got interested and talked with the nearby Charr. He told me that I should attempt to guess where a launched cow would land (I skimmed the text) and so I guessed the tower. Immediately after making my choice, I realized to my horror that I had just put 50 silver on the line.
The cow launched. It flew far…but not far enough, and landed in the harpy roosts.
“Oh, too bad…want to try again?” He said. I could almost hear his smug laughter.
I had to do it again. I had to win back my hard-earned silver…so I guessed tower again.
The cow launched. It flew far…but not far enough, and landed in the harpy roosts…again…
“That one almost made it. Too bad…want to try again?” He said. I could swear he was smiling.
I felt sick. In less than a minute, I had torched half my savings. But I hadn’t learned my lesson yet. Determined to at least win once, and restore at least a quarter of my losses, I chose the harpy roosts.
The cow launched. It flew far…REALLY far…and landed on the tower.
“Wow, that was a good one! Shame you guessed wrong. I have one last cow. Want to give it one more go?” He said with glee.
I was dead inside. Utterly without hope. But still, I decided what was 50 silver more to my 1g 50s loss? I was already screwed, might as well complete the sacrifice.
So I put my last 50s on the line and chose the harpy nests (third option).
The cow launched. It hardly even made it out of the cattlepult…and landed just a few meters away.
“Aw, dang! That was a dud. Oh well, and sorry, I don’t give refunds.” He said smugly.
By the bear. By norn-self almost lost it then. All my despair turned to rage.
THAT CON-CHARR! I CALL HACKS! LETS SEE IF YOU GIVE REFUNDS AFTER I SHOVE YOUR SNOUT INTO YOUR SKULL!
But alas, he was a “friendly” NPC, so my frantic greatsword swings didn’t do squat.
And that is the story of my greatest launch mistake. And also why I will never EVER sucker up to gambling again.
I joined a bit late but had RL friends that already played the game and were level 80. Once I hit level 30 they took me to an Acalonian Catacombs run. They warned me dungeons were hard so I followed them closely, didn’t matter cause I died, I died a lot… Kholer was like, hardest boss ever, it was impossible to dodge the scorpion wire. Remember that AC run took like an hour and a half, thought it was all my fault because I was being “carried”
Once I got to level 80 I remember crafting/buying with karma my Soldier armor set. kitten I was a walking punching bag and hit like a wet noodle.
@razor
Lol. Funny. 2 gold was a huge amount back then. I bet that hurt. I remember my very first gold after so long of only having a few silver. So shiny!
_________
I remember back in the betas ANet gave us some gems to buy items from the gem store to use during the beta weekends. I got a mini pack and one of my minis was a brown bear. It was so cute and I knew that I wanted to get one when the game launched to use with my ranger and his brown bear pet.
I did get and use that brown bear mini on my ranger after launch, but ahhhh, the heart is a fickle beast. I haven’t used it in a very long time now. I’m still fond of it but its mostly from a memory of when the game was shiny and new and stretched out in front of us with all its unknown possibilities.
ANet may give it to you.
@razor
Just one flaw, gems were 30 silver for 100 Only makes sense if on the first day they were 25 silver.
Jump off Rata Sum and kill myself over and over again like a mad man.
LOL
I feel so ashamed
I have a pet- I am a Ranger.
I have Avatar of Balthazar- I am a Dervish.
Jump off Rata Sum and kill myself over and over again like a mad man.
Did that too. So many times I came so close to reaching the bottom too.
I did it again when they added gliding to the original maps. Then ended up in prison alongside about 6 other people who were doing the exact same thing.
“Life’s a journey, not a destination.”
I did that too, the jumping off Rata Sum shortly after launch. Probably very common. Those open windows were too enticing.
I used revive orbs. Jumped out. Died on a ledge. Revived and got to the edge, jumped. Hit ground and revived again. (And that is a looonnngg fall).
I was able to walk around under the city for a few minutes before I was teleported to the jail. Basically it’s unfinished ground. No bushes or trees. Just an open area with an basic surface.
ANet may give it to you.
I don’t really remember a lot. And I don’t have much to tell, because generally I know how to play games so I don’t have those noob moments since I tend to look things up by myself too if I’m uncertain how to do stuff.
*I ran around with random statted gear with my Necromancer. I didn’t really care what I wear, though I remember getting full magic find set when we didn’t have account bound MF yet, but we had MF% on gears instead.
*I also named my Necromancer wrong, I missed one letter and later when I tried to change my name it was already taken. Now I have a whole different name.
*Played GW2 with my crappy computer and lowest graphics the early days. Tend to crash a lot, especially if a lot of people were present, like the fight with Tequatl. Now I can play fine with maxed settings.
*When I thought that the price of 20 silver / gem was high.

I was soooo afraid of those ugly mobs killing my toon (and they did – a lot). I used to get so nervous I was literally dodging in real life, what a luck that I had my pc on a low table and was sitting on the floor. I also tried to look behind cornes and down the cliffs by leaning in RL. I suspect I still do it sometimes…
Hoarding trash (shiny!) materials. And I’m still doing that – i have 2 bank tabs filled with.. shinies! I think i really deserve the “Honorary Skritt” title.
I remember I think in the betas I made my way down to the swamp in queensdale. I was not prepared and kept trying (like 6 times lol) to kill a mosquito. I never succeeded.
Remembered another one:
I told my friends I didn’t need them to run my lowly level 30 character through the maps to complete Mad Memories Complete Edition, I’d wait and do it myself the next year.
Yeah…still regret that.
“Life’s a journey, not a destination.”
I ran around naked for some time because I didn’t know that your armor got “broken”. I had no idea why I was naked.
Honestly though I’d never played an MMO or any video game other than the Sims so I had no idea what I was doing at all. I don’t think I discovered the trading post for at least a few months. I didn’t even know what the “scary” portals were between maps. I stayed in Queensdale for a very, very, very long time LOL
When I started playing 4 years ago with my friends, we simply ran all over the place and killed everything on our way. It wad like that first 30 levels or so.
I found the nearest dungeon, helped even newer players through it. Walked around QD and other maps to observe, but it lost its glamour after the curtain was drawn about how incomplete things still were.
