What do you think is overall the best profession, and why?
I play a guardian btw.
I have a 41 Guardian and a 13 Ranger. I prefer the Ranger. Why? Because my 7 year old daughter likes all the pets….. truly. Also, she makes and names all my characters. Yes, they are all women.
The one you feel like playing?
Overall, i’d probably say the Guardian.
They’ve got options that many, many classes do not. They are completely viable healers, tanks, zone control, damage and even condition damage (never, NEVER underestimate burning)
Add to the fact they have access to one of the most powerful buffs, Aegis… I believe overall these guys are #1. They truly can do it all in a number of ways and good guardians in pvp are absoultely disgusting to fight against and EVERYONE wants one in their party.
Tailoring because I get extra bag space. Oh, you mean class:

Yep, role guardian. Everyone should have one eventually.

No, he means profession.
OT: jumping on the Guardian bandwagon.
Tailoring because I get extra bag space. Oh, you mean class:
What Rizbo said…in GW2 “Profession” is ranger, thief, guardian etc. Craft is tailoring, armorsmithing and so on. Same thing when we say boon instead of buff and condition instead of debuff/dot.
Regarding the OP i dont play what is best, i play what i enjoy. I dont really enjoy playing Mesmer, Necro or Ranger. I kinda like the Eng, Thief and Guardian though.
lol, epic fail there on the “correction”
In any case I would say Guardian.
- Weapon choices all have a clear and well thought out purpose
- Utility skills are varied between offense, defense, and support
- Traits are well laid out and synergise well
- Good balance of combo fields and finishers
- Decent array of conditions and fantastic boons
- Multiple high performing builds
I think Warrior would probably come in second followed by Ranger to round out the top 3 spots.
I agree with all of you, well most of you anyways. I have tried several professions, all of them I believe, and I found the guardian to be the best. I now do much more damage with my guardian than I ever did with my elementalist, when they are at the same level of course. Also I found that guardians have extremely good survivability. I die very rarely has a guardian. When I was an elementalist I would die so often, it became a usual routine in the game almost. I think guardians are a pretty good profession. Of course there are no good/bad professions, only good/bad players, but guardians in my opinions are slightly OP’d at the moment. Also I wanted to ask, how are guardians with a scepter/staff, or in range dps?
Best for what?
I play a mesmer because of the great 1v1 potential and unrivaled escapability. Some professions have debuffs that affect the players’ characters, my profession applies the “confusion” debuff to the players themselves.
When we say “best”, we mean a profession that is best overall, not for a certain thing. What do YOU think is the “best” profession at the moment, and why?
Warrior. Gaurdian’s playstyle is more involved than I like. It seems like you have to push buttons to do what a warrior can do with traits and leveling up (self-preservation wise). Warrior’s ranged options/damage rival and/or exceed rangers as well.

Agree’d. Warrior #1.
I’ve tried out every profession so far, and the rest just feel 100% bleh compared to the warrior.
After having tried all the professions in the mists i think Warrior is the strongest and Guardian is the best designed overall with best skill combination: variety performance cool animations etc.
Interesting, perhaps I will try out a warrior, just to play around. The only problem or thing I sort of dislike with warrior is that they are a bit bland. But of course, my opinion is just a drop in an ocean of many. I think I chose guardian for the “magic” lol.
Thief..
Great single target DPS. Solid aoe dps with shortbow..
Amazing in all WPvP and SPvP.
There isn’t such thing as a best profession this is really more of an opinionated question.
I have a lvl 80 guardian and I absolutely love playing him.
In terms of versatility or jack of all trades it seems warriors take the cake because they have a lot of different weapons at their disposal.
You are right remix, this is a very opinionated questions and that is what I intended for it to be. To find out what other people think the best profession is. So far it seems most people go with the guardian, well we can take our discussion further with more posts that come in.
At first I thought that the Ranger would be the most overpowered, kind of like a hunter from WoW. It certainly did not turn out that way, I have found the pets for the Ranger to be useless, what about you guys?
I am starting to get annoyed by the guardian, they have no good range. What do you guys think?
Guardian is the BEST profession especially the NORN with bearform and those powerful books of runes. The healing skills are sooooooo helpful and allow me to take on 2-3 mobs or more at much higher levels than myself at least 3 five levels higher. Guardians can play up close and ranged and this is another plus for them. Come in ranged with scepter or staff and then switch to greatsword or mace depending on your style for close up dmg and healing skills. I don’t know how many times bearform has saved me in a pinch but it’s a lot and that one BOON skill that has 10 seconds of everything active at once (save yourselves or something like that) is another life saver. With my build I can put burning (one of the best conditions out there) on my foes one an AOE.
So GUARDIAN NORN is BEST class/profession evah.
I am starting to get annoyed by the guardian, they have no good range. What do you guys think?
No good range?? You haven’t been playing them right then because they have some GREAT RANGED skills check out the ELITE rune books and then the Arcane Sword and the OWL and the HAMMER!! The Scepter is an excellent ranged weapon and I use it often with its AOE circle and of course the Staff has an even great AOE dmg circle but too many of its skills are defensive yet helpful keepiing mobs away from you. Running a Staff and Scepter with a torch can do some awesome dmg fast if you KNOW HOW TO PLAY them together.
All professions are so normalized that I always felt like I was playing the same profession no matter what profession I was playing….
You know, I have never really tried a scepter/staff seriously. You make an excellent point Ravinhood, I must be doing something wrong lol. I will try out the range on guardian. So far most people say guardian is the best profession, but they recently got a slight nerf from ArenaNet. Let’s see what happens…
It seems that guardians can be very good at range, perhaps they are currently the best profession after all you guys have been saying. Any other professions that you think are the overall “best”?
Elementalist.
Because John Kittening Madden.
Seriously, try a D/D Ele, and make sure you’re actually trying to do stuff like swap attunements, use self-profession combos, etc. That stuff is bloody FRANTIC. Hard as hell, and for a reward that’s not especially better than something easier, but I’ll be darned if it isn’t refreshing.
I use to play an Elementalist , they were of course excellent in DPS, and were a ton of fun to play. Personally I think what keeps the Elementalist from being the overall “best” profession is the fact that they really do die a lot, so much that it becomes a regular part of the game, dying. Well, what do you guys think?
hard to tell which one is the best, but the absolute worst is piece of cake
necromancers by a mile
Yeah I have heard quite a bit of necromancers…I have heard they have excellent survivability, but how is there DPS?
Necromancer, it weeds out all the scrubs trying to play in the big boy pool lol.
guardian lack of a viable ranged weapon that works beyond 600 keeps them from being op imo
and no, scepter is not viable ranged. it travels insanely slow and generates no symbols to combo out of. the orbs from the auto attack do hit decently hard – if they land. but it had better be a stand-still boss.
luckily in the nastier encounters like claw of jormag anet also added packs of champions and veterans for guardians to play around with while everyone else plinks at that dragon with real ranged.
Right now?
Probably warrior. Simple, not too many bugs, balanced, diverse and numerous builds.
The one I find most fun though, is my engineer. But has too many balance and bug issues to be considered ‘best’.
Warrior is easily #1. For guardians out there, wait til you hit level 80 and complain about how much lower your hitpoints are compared to Warriors.
So basically Warriors are tankier, do more damage, have a better ranged option and still provide awesome mobility and buffs for your party.
No, he means profession.
Classes are called professions! Quests are called Hearts! Public Quests/Rifts are called Dynamic Events! Battlegrounds are called Scenarios! RvR is called WvW! Buffs are called Boons! Debuffs are called Conditions! Professions are called who the juvenile domesticated cat knows!
My god this game is revolutionary.

Interesting opinions on warriors. I think I may agree with you. At end game, melee just really doesn’t work that great and range is great asset to have. Maybe warrior is the “best” profession due to the guardians lack of range attack. What do you guys think?
Just made a warrior, I think I will play it for a while and see how it compares to the guardian.
Some people seem to define “best” as “most ownage with least effort”
Class I enjoy playing most atm is Mesmer, but that might change as I get higher level in other classes.
There is no “best” profession.
Guardian seems to be the best class overall followed by warrior, elementalist is not viable and the others are mostly at the same level except ranger and engineer have some cheese that is sure to get nerfed.
Ditto, but liked guardian and engineer alot too.
“best” for me? hmm idk… i work alot and havent had alot of time to put in to any 1 profession. My highest level is a lvl 32 ranger followed by a lvl 8 ele then lvl 4 warrior and lvl 3 theif. I like them all, however the ranger feels a tad generic but again im lvl 32 and probably havnt gotten all the game mechanics down
I have been playing a warrior just for a little bit, not very far with it though. So far it seems the same as a guardian, but I am just in the level 3 area lol. Can anyone tell me how the range is on the warrior, if needed could a warrior go range rather than melee?
I run my warrior w/long bow and rifle. It’s fun and they are effective at range but I think rule of thumb here is melee usually does more damage. Long bow has some nice AoE and rifle (a little more popular) is single target. When you get higher in level you can have 2 weapon sets so you could use a ranged and melee.
Mesmer just WRECKS people in PVP. Does moderatly well in PVE.
Guardian is just plain awesome in PVE.
Elementalist is awesome as kittens in PVE as well. (dual dagger earth/water/air F T W )
I see a LOT of complaints about the elementalist.
1. Dont face tank. DODGE !
2. Dont use a staff.
3. Dont use fire.
4. Take DEFENSIVE skills and use them.
5. O M G Toughness!
6. OMG Vitality ! YAY more HP!
7. Swap elements. Water does offer some healing, its small but it just may save your life.
( pass it on ! )
Rangers rock. Great ranged and melee attacks + great group support skills. Collecting pets is kinda fun too.
Warrior does alright.
1. Hit enemy with weapon.
2. Is enemy dead? if yes, move on to next enemy.
If no, return to #1.
Thief is a ton of fun to play as well. Great mobility and every weapon conbo feels really solid.
Engineer is different with all the weapon kits you get. I am kinda mixed on the engineer. I am not sure I have stumbled upon the right set of goodies that really make the class spectacular. But then again I am Asuran so The engineer IS the best. Science has proven this to be true.
No comment on the necro, havent played it yet.
No one said it yet?
Okay then. The best for me?
Of course Necromancer!
Are you kidding me?
We have the most awesome 1 second fear condition while thief only have what? 3 seconds? Pfffttt…….
We have minions! Free meat tank, no need to feed them, free monthly charge, and they die so easy that we often forget they exist. And that’s not all. Jagged Horror! Yeah Jagged Horror! Who doesn’t love little-bleeding-deformed-rat-like-onlygodknowswhatitis?
And our damage is the most fun thing! Big damage? Too mainstream! GW2 is a revolutional MMO, small is the new big. We deal the worse damage. Isn’t that cool?
(and many other features about Necromancer that will simply make it the best profession ever)
Other profession, I think Mesmer will do. They are fun to play.
Rangers! They’re the best all around class – tank, dps, healers.
Hmm…Elementalists are indeed an excellent class, but they require a very large amount of skill and an experienced gamer behind the keyboard. I originally played a ranger for my main. I leveled him up to level 10 and stopped, I felt his dps wasn’t all that great, and he was boring. But the guardian proved to be much better than the ranger in dps. Let me ask you guys a questions, I have been thinking this one over for a while. Which is better overall: the Warrior? or the Guardian?
I like all of them, some just suit me better than others.
Thief is my highest, love her. Warrior is next on my alts, followed by Mesmer, Ranger and my newest Guardian.
I can’t get into Engineers, its the whole tech thing I guess. I just deleted my second Ele, compared to GW1 Eles they just don’t seem to measure up. Probably a balance thing to do with WvW.
smack..Wut?…smack…smack…
Yeah I never liked the Engineer that much. I recently heard that Guardians received a major nerf, where they now have just about as much health as an Elementalist, I think this is absolutely crazy, I mean Guardians are supposed to be a tankish profession, right? I am still playing Guardian, if they are better in range than the Warrior is, then they may be the current “best” profession overall.
