Seriously, what does “hot” on the Gem Store even mean?

Is it an indicator that an item is selling a lot? Or is it just a random buzz word to make people buy things?

Cuz’, y’know… I’m really skeptical that players would be buying Mystic Forge stones as one of the top items, when more than half the player base don’t even know what they do.

If “hot” is based on demand, then that begs the question why are Black Lion Keys not currently “hot”, even though they are free? If an item being “hot” was ever based on player demand, then the “hotness” of Black Lion Chest Keys should by skyrocketing through the roof! But instead, they’re not…

Could someone actually clarify if it actually means anything, or if it’s just a fake marketing buzz word that makes weak-willed people, conditioned to buy “hot” things, more likely to spend money on useless products they don’t need, like Mystic Forge stones? You know, those items most players have 160 of from the achievement chests? Yeah, those things.

Maybe my skepticism is wrong. Maybe it isn’t a buzz word. Maybe people are really buying so many Mystic Forge Stones, that they are one of the top selling items in the game. Maybe they have a really strange obsession with Mystic Forge stones, or someone discovered an infinite gold loop exploit. Or maybe some people with too much money have a mentally sick shopping addiction, and actually don’t look at what they are buying in the first place. Orrrrr, maybe it’s just a buzz word, and it doesn’t mean anything.

What do you think?

You answered your own question. This is pretty much what all marketing is anywhere now-a-days. Haven’t you noticed that before?

“Hot” is the same thing as “Manager’s Special”. These items are near their expiration date, and will go bad soon.

No. It doesn’t mean a thing. Just a selling “tactic” to try to grab your attention. Not even a special sale. I remember when the headgear show/hide button was broken. Your character was stuck with their helmet either on or off, depending on what state it was set at when the bug appeared. After many bug reports on the forums, ANet decided it was a good time to label the Aviator’s Sunglasses as “Hot”. So many people bought them and couldn’t even display them. Good times.

Maybe it means that the accounting people are lighting fires under the marketing people saying, “More sales!”

It means we don’t have anything new or soon to expire on the market.

We are heroes. This is what we do!
