Did Arenanet buy out gw2? There’s no more ncsoft logo on any of the trailers or the website. And when you go to ncsofts website it’s not on the list of games.

Arenanet took over distribution of GW2 any other details no one outside Arenanet and NcSoft really knows.

I am actually glad that Anet took over. I have dealt with Ncsoft in the past and to say that I was less than pleased with them would be an understatement. Basically, everything that Anet does right Ncsoft does wrong.

They have a history of not listening to thier community and they have now gotten to the point where thier #1 concern is getting people to spend as much money as possible in the cash shop. It has actually gotten to the point that they have events every week and every one is aimed at luring people to the cash shop to spend money.

Every other aspect of the game is almost completely ignored.

you can’t fix stupid

Funny. The main website does not have ncsoft’s logo, but the forums and support page still do. Odd.

And Nexon bought shares in them a couple of years ago which further explains the p2w direction (coughMaplestorycough). I was very worried that the gem store in this game would take on a Nexon vibe.

Not this again. Yes, Nexon bought stock. They never got any seats on the NCSOFT board and when they pressed early this year NCSOFT shut them down by getting a white knight to counter Nexon’s percentage.

Basically back when Nexon bought the stock the two companies formed a new joint studio. Their first project got canceled part way through and suddenly NCSOFT announces a very similar game coming soon. Nexon wasn’t happy about that and tried to take over NCSOFT. Then there was the stockholder meeting where Nexon tried to take over and they failed spectacularly. Nexon is now pouting in a corner with their lawyers waiting for the day when NCSOFT stock is above the level that they bought it for so they won’t take a bath on the sale.

And Pay 2 Win? In what universe?

Anet is still a wholly owned subsidiary of NCSoft, but now they’re doing their own publishing so NCSoft doesn’t get mentioned as much. A bit like how Cadbury is owned by Kraft, but you don’t see their logo on the packaging.

Anet has always been fairly independent though, their relationship seems to be that when Anet needs cash up front for a big project (like GW1 or 2) NCSoft provide it, then Anet pay it back over time.

Yes that money will then go towards other NCSoft games, it will have come from other games too. That’s how the system works.

NCSoft has done some terrible things to games … ones that made them money at that. The less they are involved, the better IMO.

Exactly, where did ANet get their development funds from? Lineage, AION? What doesn’t happen is NCSOFT can’t loot ANet’s accounts or demand more of a royalty or extra payments beyond what was agreed upon.

What NCSOFT gets at the end of the day, well quarter, is the ability to add in ANet’s sales income, and expenses, into their quarterly and annual reports.

Other than City of Heroes, the rest of the NA MMOs that they closed were all failures financially, some spectacularly. And CoH’s income dropped to the point that it couldn’t support the studio so they closed the studio which doomed the game.

The question is now can Wildstar pull itself back up out of the well they dug for themselves and do well enough as a F2P game to make the jump across the Pacific. NCSOFT really wants to be more than a one region game company. They want their native developed games to do well in NA/EU (finally doing a B&S release) and vice versa.
