What happened to update while playing ...
GW2 has never had that…
You have always had to download the patch using the Launcher.
Since the release of the game every time there has been an update anyone who it online gets a message saying that there is a new patch and they will be logged out in X minutes.
Updates update the client and the dat file, there is no way they could simply apply updates to individual maps while you’re playing.
I think perhaps you’ve confused this with another game?

I think he meant GW1 which did updates and map downloads while you were playing. I suppose it’s not possible now because GW2 isn’t completely instanced like GW1 was. But yeah if that could be implemented again it would be awesome. On my current connection at home, because it’s shared bandwidth it took me 7hrs to download the 1gb of files.
Didn’t help that I left it on when I went to work expecting it to be done, but because they added another patch in between, the update stalled and I had to start it over when I came home. And spent my time waiting (well at least I got in a few TV shows, chatted with family and etc) but still, big update chunks not good for people on slower connections especially when we’re trying to catch up on daily achievements.

The way updates work in GW2 is even if anyone on the team makes any change no matter how small it is considered a new build ( I saw a video where it might get updated in house 5- 10 time a day) hence a all new download
During promotion before betas they touted a system where “we can patch on the fly and not require server downtime”. I still haven’t seen this implemented, but apparently they have the system.
Having to download a patch and server downtime are two completely different things.
When was the last time the game was down for an extended period of time for MAINTENANCE?

I like the way they do their updates….. in a dungeon you get 3hours to restart, if not you get 3 min.
Altho having said that i dont pvp so i dont know how that works
Are you confused with Hero Engine and SWTOR? They had hype leading up to game about live changes.

Nope GW1 also required a re-log and launcher patch for updates. Quite distinctly recall the “a new build is available” text showing up in the chat and then alerting you at time intervals.
The game is updated while you play. You just have to log out to download the update which takes all of 2 minutes. That’s how it was in gw1 and that’s how it is now. It’s not something like wow where it’s down for 4-8 hours to download a small patch that fixed only a handful of things.
