What has changed in the past year or two
It would be useful to know if you left before or after the HoT expansion and what aspects of the game you prefer to play.
ANet may give it to you.
Well there was an expansion ….

Left before the expansion !

Well, PvE wise, an expansion, smallish in size but one that changed up the game in several ways with new maps, new meta events and story line, new collections, guild halls, gliding, a new heavy armor class (Revenant) and new elite specializations with a new weapon for each class. Raids were added and the new Living Story 3 is adding a new map with each new story section. The Living Story is free if you log in during that section, otherwise you’ll have to pay for it.
ANet may give it to you.
Sounds exciting!
What about the classes? Who’s more useful overall, with all these expansions and raids.
What game mode are you interested in when talking about meta? sPvP? WvW? PvE fractals? PvE raiding? Have you checked meta battle for current meta builds for your prefered game mode(s)? That might give you a better idea of what professions are in demand right now.
Meta is pretty balanced in PvE.
As for PvP… I do not know, for WvW.. I do not know either.
PvE Meta:
Big hitboxes favor ele, but less then before, and dragonhunter….
For the rest of the dps: some condi builds will produce the same amount of DPS as DPS classes.
Support builds like druid, chronomancer and berserker tend to be a litlle (to a lot) less powerfull, with the exception of the condition warrior.
HoT?:
HoT is pretty mandatory by now, provided you want to play high tier fractals, raids, have acces to elite specialistations, the new 8 maps, masteries, and have an idea where the story went and so on.
This said the game can still be played with a vanilla account, but little has changed over the time you were away.
Been There, Done That & Will do it again…except maybe world completion.
Also – We’re about halfway through (or so) Living Story 3, which also requires Heart of Thorns. You’ll have to buy the first three episodes with gems. I don’t know if the maps (Bloodstone Fen, Ember Bay, Bitterfrost Frontier) are accessible without the episodes.

The maps are not accessible without unlocking the story steps. You have to have unlocked the episodes in order to get into the maps.
The LS3 is also not accessible without having Heart of Thorns – the expansion. You can get access to the episodes for later but cannot play them without HoT
Finally coming back to this game since a year or two, was just wondering what main things has changed since then.
Also, a tier of the classes during the meta. Like who I should stay away from, etc.
Thanks!
Leather is really really really expensive right now and Anet doesn’t want to fix it

Leather is expensive right now, and ANet are making changes aimed at addressing that, but given the pent up demand, and the relatively slow moving nature of economies, we won’t know how effective that was for several more months, at least.
Fixed that for you. At least, unless you like whiplash as the price tanks to below vendor sell value, and then spikes up through the roof again, because every correction is an enormous overreaction intended to change value instantly…

Gotcha, didn’t know they couldn’t fix salvage tables a few percent a week, or fix refinement by reducing 1 input from the current 4 on something like thick leather. Just because when Anet used to fix something thought up every conceivable idea and then implemented all of them at the same time, doesn’t mean that’s what has to happen on a go forward basis.
Not sure if you pay attention to this kind of thing but leather has been a mess for over a year now. If you think the new crafting requirements for PVP and Fractal gear is going to help the situation, you’re completely out of your mind.
Adjusting supply is a delicate process. Too much, the price plummets to NPC value on the TP as supply soars, too little and not much happens. I believe John Smith said in the last Reddit release thread (or maybe here) that they are comfortable keeping the rate of new supply entering the world (not the TP) around 10% above the rate that’s being removed.
If the 10% excess ends up in the bank, on the TP or used by the gatherer is entirely player driven. Obviously anything other than ending up on the TP isn’t going to affect its price. And it’s the forces of supply and demand with how that relates to the price that ANet wants to see push the price down, a more organic solution rather than frequent adjusting of the supply knob based on how a mat’s flow of creation/destruction is on a weekly or monthly basis.
As for PvP and Fractal Ascended gear impacting. Neither use T6 which I thought was the primary complaint as that’s the only one that’s fairly expensive.
