First off, i think gw2 is a far superior game that has improved upon many aspects from the original, but the main storyline just lacks in comparison. Not even necessarily what the story is about, but how its told.

In gw1 we had many mission points across the map that you could go to and find a party of players that want to complete that mission plus the bonus mission within it. This offered a sense of community and playing together. These missions were also usually pretty long and often challenging too, especially with the later introduction of hard mode. These missions felt rewarding and fun as you progressed through an instance with 7 other players and got the story along with it. I miss going to one of these missions and typing out LFG and waiting for human interaction. All the people typing, interacting and messaging each other to party up made the game feel more alive. (The LFG tool in gw2 completely removes this and makes the world feel dead imo, but this is another topic and im off topic now)

In gw2 we have these tiny little personal story missions that offer 0 challenge at all and usually last less than 5 minutes of your time which is laughable. And worst of all, there is literally no reason to play these with anyone else with you. Theres no sense of working together to accomplish a misson.

The closest thing we have to the gw1 mission system is probably dungeons and raiding, but thats not really a proper comparison considering gw1 had like 100 missions across 3 continents plus bonus and hard modes.

In an upcoming expansion or something, i really think arenanet should implement this system again as it is incredibly fun and rewarding for you and your party to work together to complete a mission.

Before anyone gets mad at me either, ive actually never tried any of the living world content, so if its anything like gw1 missions let me know.

I just miss reaching the next mission and travelling and progressing in the continent to get to it

I also played GW1 so I know of what you are discussing here and comparing. The thing is it was needed in GW1 because there was no open world. They made the missions that way to put the Multiplayer aspect into the MMO part of it.

Here there is an open world so they really didn’t need to “force” it. You can go out, anywhere and find players and join in on working with them without the drama of needing to join groups or needing this or that class etc or whatever.

Yes dungeons here are pretty much GW2’s version of that as well as fractals too and then of course raids. Dungeons and Fractals as well as raids are believe it or not MEANT to be about the stories they bring. Sure people play them for the rewards mainly but there are the stories there and that’s what it’s meant to be about.

I certainly don’t think it’s a good idea or want future PS or living story to turn back into what GW1 was. It’s just not needed here. I however certainly am not against new dungeons, raids or fractals with new stories as I think that will of course add more to the game.

I think maybe you need to find a guild or group to adventure with and perhaps do dungeons and fractals for the STORY part perhaps? That is NO skipping the scenes, watch them, ENJOY them and get that immersion that you are seeking.

One thing I would like to say however. I did like the dungeon system better in GW1. That is you go in and clear out rooms one by one. None of this nancy garbage you do here “run past the mobs” “cheat this way” for faster clears! Perhaps anet could add a few more like this too!

Since when did this business of being a hero become being a business?

I do miss the instancing and the henchmen/hero/mercenary system. I also miss the AI. And I miss ally targeting skills. Way too much cleave/aoe in general in gw2.

Well I don’t actually miss these things because I occasionally play gw1.

Things I personally miss from GW1 ( or what GW1 did better )

Dungeons, ( uncluding the elite ones, UW, FoW etc )
PvP
HardMode ( this is still something I think Anet could do in GW2, just make a map instanced, for 5 or 10 man to go clear.
Locked Chests which you needed lock picks for.

The thing i miss the most is Cantha. i was hanging around there alot in GW1, because i loved the theme and the art.
I was pretty hyped for HoT because of the jungletheme, but i’m a lil disappointet with the maps and the story. It just didn’t pull me in the way GW1 did.
I like the way the do living world at the moment, because it brings players together just like missions in GW1.
Perhaps if they overhaul the dungeons soon it would have a similar effect.

I do not know what Guildwars you were playing, but that is far from what happens in dungeons. They were actually worse on people running them and going past mobs than Guildwars2. I know I used to run CoF in Guildwars. We used to speed clear Tomb of the Primeval Kings With a Monk a Ranger puller (sometimes two) A Blood is Power Necro an Mm Necro and two more support splinter weapon Rangers. And Tombs was the only place you actually had to clear an area out before you moved on to the next level.

Also FoW , UW, Tombs, Urgoz, DOA, and the Deep were not dungeons. They are Elite Missions Some people could run for example a get to the end reward FoW in about 7-8 minutes

I agree with this. There were so many trick builds, dual 600 monks and all sorts of stuff. We used to go into the Fissure of Woe with a perma sin and an ele and just use meteor storm while the perma sin held aggro. If it was done right, the ele never aggroed anything and the permasin couldn’t die.

You dont’ have to run past mobs if you can just farm them with no danger. lol

Well the perfect dungeon for running past mobs was Shards of Orr again shadowform played a key role in that dungeon. Also took people about 7 minutes to complete.

The one thing I miss from GW1 is the fail condition in quests. The only struggle is dyng having to run back to a battle. Some events can fail but thats usually because of a timer more than a fail condition. I never really feel challenged during missions anymore. Its always, I can kill everything in one go, or I die once and have to run back to the fight.

The only difference I see between finding a group in GW1 and GW2 is the LFG tool means you don’t need to be in the same map and the person starting the group doesn’t need to keep spamming the message, they can just put it up once and then wait.

Locked Chests which you needed lock picks for.

We have like 6 or 7 different kinds of those now.
