I started playing at headstart and therefore wanted to get in quick with my usual game name which is Thereon. I started a human female and created an alt called Thereonx to store equips on as per every other game. Got bored with Queensdale and thought id go check out the Sylvari areas….havent looked back since.
Sylvari typically have just the one name but there is no rule saying they cannot have a second name, just that ‘it isnt known how other Sylvari would react to an individual with two names’. I like to stick to naming conventions but many have created Sylvari characters with two names so id say this ‘taboo’ of two names is now gone.
So the story- my Sylvari awoke with the memories of a fallen human female soldier called Thereon. She admired the courage and passion of this individual and so took on her name shortly after wandering into the world. She soon felt a pressing need to blend in with the general population of Tyria in order to best get to know them, and so made the decision to adopt the second name Avenrise meaning ‘A white plant rising’.
There’s a whole backstory behind the human female thing but ive never bothered to write it down, its just in my head. I wont bore you with it! Needless to say im waiting for the name change contract to be released!

My Old D&D characters

LOL
Beowulf Wyrmslayer is my main (human) warrior. He takes the name of his Guild Wars 1 forebear.
Beowulf obviously from the epic poem. Wyrmslayer as he kills dragons.
My ranger is a Sylvari called Wildheart. Again, her name follows that of my GW1 ranger’s, who was Wildheart Everlone.
Her name is a direct reference to the British heavy metal band “The Wildhearts”.
Similarly, my human mesmer is called Nexus Icon, a song by The Wildhearts about a particularly narcissistic rock star. It just seemed fitting for a mesmer.
My Asuran thief is Spring Heeled Jack .
I have three Norn.
A female elementalist called Hurdy Gurdy, an homage to the Swedish Chef and the comedy language option in Guild Wars 1.
A male guardian called Norbert Twice. I don’t know why, but the name has a nice feel to it, a certain rhythm.
And a female warrior called Magnificent Chest. Sorry, I couldn’t resist.
My gigantic Charr engineer is called Mister Tiddles. Want to make something of it?
It was a continual source of amusement having him accompanied by his best mate Dinky during the personal story.
My other two characters are Moonyew, a male Sylvari necromancer and Mireclaw, a female Charr thief. Not too fussed either way about those names.
Therefore I may take some time replying to you.
A few of my toons are named after characters in George R.R. Martin’s Song of Ice and Fire (Game of Thrones) series.
Human Elementalist – Dracarys. The High Valyrian word for dragonfire. Danaerys Targaryen speaks it to command her dragons to let loose a bit of flaming death. =D
Norn Guardian – Argilac Durrendon. An obscure character, not much more than an historical reference in the story. In ASoIaF, House Baratheon’s (as in Robert Baratheon, king when the series begins) sigil is the stag and their words are ‘Ours is the Fury.’ King Robert’s ancestor, Orys Baratheon adopted the sigil and words when he and the Targaryens took Storm’s End from House Durrendon, of which Argilac was the last lord. I really only went with this name/theme because the Norn T3 cultural armor is amazing and I wanted a toon where the stag theme had some significance.
Human Warrior – The Kraken Queen. Named for Asha Greyjoy. She’s not much to speak of so far in the HBO version, but in the books she’s quite the BAMF warrior queen. The sigil of House Greyjoy is the kraken, and she is one of those fighting for the throne after her father’s death.
I’m a dork.

My names are based on norsemen ,metal and WW2-
Asura Enginner – Ervin the Fixer. Ervin has been a name I’ve used since DaoC, had it on a Kibby shadowblade back then, the name comes from Erwin Rommel, the field marshal of the so called Ghost Division (7th Panzer Division) during WW2. They covered ground so quickly at the invasion of France that even the german high command lost track of their position. It been a name I’ve stuck too, always on a little people race (except in SWToR), it has that goofy sound to it, but it still sounds good.
Sylvari Mesmer – Watain Blacklight. Inspiration comes from the Swedish BM band Watain aswell as the song Watain from the band Von. Inspiration for the lastname comes from the song Legions of the Black Light.
Human Necro – Marduk Irondawn. Inspiration comes from an old diety, a character in scholomance aswell as the swedish BM band Marduk. Irondawn comes from the album Iron Dawn.
Norn Guardian – Skallagrim Kveldulv. Old norse names, cant find much better for norn characters. Been with me since DaoC. Skallagrim = Grim skull, grim helmet, bald etc. Kveldulv = Nightwolf, has been used as a word for werewolf.
Norn Ranger – Hilding Hrafnson. Old norse name. Hilding = Chieftain or kin of a chieftain. Hrafnson = Son of the Raven.
Sylvari Thief – Mithotyn the Rover. Name has been with me since DaoC, inspiration comes from the viking metal band Mithotyn and their song the Rover. It’s always been an elf-ish character, mostly a hunter or ranger. But here he turned into a thief.
Lusnatuis (Sylvari Mesmer) – Lusnatùise is Gaelic for “lavender.” Opted for a slightly altered version of the word.
Adila Bushira (Human Elementalist) – Adila = Swahili for “justice.” Bushira = Swahili for “brings good tidings.” I’m a former City of Heroes player who called Justice server home. This character name is a nod to my old COH server.
Zlixxa (Asura Necromancer) – Something I cobbled together that sounded cool
Tikaa (Asura Warrior, though seriously considering rerolling her into a Ranger) – Something I cobbled together that sounded cool
Kaira Sharptooth (Charr Engineer) – Sharptooth is a name I used for my Charr during the BWEs and choose it to represent her wit. Kaira is Greek for “right or opportune moment” and I thought would go well with Sharptooth.
Kjirian Sjöberg (Norn Guardian) – Kjirian is a name I’ve used for several D&D characters in the past (usually cleric or paladin). Sjöberg is a common Swedish surname that means “sea hill.”
Beite (Sylvari Thief) – Gaelic for “white birch” (aimed for a look that is reminiscent of a Paper Birch at the end of fall, beginning of winter).
Henge of Denravi
My human Is Lady Sofi she so cute
And My sylvari Fairy Mother – because she is a Fairy :P
The Gates Assassin – Five years ago, when “Fractions” came out (I was young), I made an assassin in a guild called The Keepers of the Gates. We all named ourselves after the guild. I made The Gates Assassin. People started calling me Gates and it really stuck.
Raine Avina – I’m a game designer and one of the games I’m making is Forever Rain, where Raine Avina is one of the main characters. Friggin love this character, so I made her my main.
Message me any time in game.
Monk Anchorwind – A tribute to my style and passion [helping others] from D&D through GW. I usually name my Monk/Cleric type Crysania [Thank you TSR], but I wasn’t going to name my warrior Crysania, so my warrior is named Monk instead.
I messed up my asura ele’s name – Wurra. I was aware of the double consonant thing, so I used that. Then later I read “Feminine asura names typically end in -i or -a vowel sounds, and the masculine in a consonant sound.” Oops! After some consideration I concluded that Wurra is an asuran equivalent to such modern human names as Sydney, Kelly, Tracy, Lynn, Terry, etc. So there!
I once had a dog named sparky who liked to bark all the time. For some reason I ended up making this stupid nickname of “spacky” who liked to “back” (created by taking out the R’s) Simplify the spelling and change the B to a P is how I got SpakPak
Norn Ranger – Stribog Heckovski – Stribog/Stribor is an old paganic name of a slavenic God of Wind and Forest. While Heckovski is a similar to my nickaname hec, its always something with hec because its an old story from old mmo and explains why i got nickname hec, but too long to write that
I’m not very original when it comes to names, and I like the names I have on my World of Warcraft characters. I have decided on using one of my wow character names for the first name and the realm I was on in Wow for the last name.
Again, not original, but it’s better than failing the name game at character creation
Blaeys, my sylvari mesmer, is a derivation of Bleys, the wizard who taught magic to Merlin in Arthurian legend (http://encyclopedia2.thefreedictionary.com/Bleys).
Main Sylvari Necromancer – Monkshood (deadly poisonous blue/purple plant)
Norn Warrior – Lycan Thrope (Norn can shapechange)
Charr Ranger – Charnivore (pet is named “fast food”)
Charr Ele – Charnoble (as in the nuclear reactor)
Asura Guardian – Pragmatic
Asura Engineer – Innept (spelled wrong because he is inept)
Human Thief – Mouser
mine are all Japanese names of course!
Human Guardian is Tamoe Gozen named after the legendary Female Samurai … Gozen is just a title like Lady in english.
Elementalist is Murasaki Hanabi (Purple Fireworks) and is a purple Sylvari
my green Sylvari Warrior with the branch head is Tsuigi Midorinoki (twiggy greenwood).
Mine are references to my many years of WoW:
Marcus Ironfoge (Norn Ranger): I had a dwarf hunter named Marcus, and well, Ironforge is the capital city of the dwarves in WoW, so it made sense to keep the tradition. Also, my pet Brown Bear is named Ol Sooty, reference to the named elite bear at Loch Modan, Ol’ Sooty.
Kara Blackrock (Norn Guardian): references to my two favorites (and probably THE best) dungeons in WoW, Karazhan and Blackrock Depths.
Alianza Argentina [ARG] @ Sorrow’s Furnace
(edited by Julian.8326)
My Ranger – Dewey Killem, he travels with his pet brown bear Howe and his fern dog Spot.
My Mesmer – Astral Projections, after my Ritualist in Guild Wars 1.
My Norn Warrior – Slayer of Insects because she killed a VERY large worm in the tutorial and she is proud of it. Lol
My Charr ele- Sandy Claws.
(edited by Astral Projections.7320)
Lelani Firecaller (Human ele)—one of my GW1 characters: Lelani is made-up, Firecaller because she was a fire ele. She was my favorite character in GW1, so I had to re-create her in GW2.
Isabella Fuochi (Human mesmer)—one of my GW1 characters: Isabella because I liked the name, Fuochi (“fire” in Italian) because GW1 character was another fire ele and had red hair. Used it for my GW2 mesmer because I like the name and she also has red hair.
Aerndis Bjorndottir (Norn ranger)—one of my GW1 characters: she was a tall, blond warrior, so I gave her a Viking name (should have been Aerndis Bjornsdottir, but that was too many letters). Seemed natural to use this name for my GW2 Norn.
Fluffy Sniffynose (Charr eng)—I saw a video from Kotaku where he made a female Charr and kept exclaiming about her fluffy tail and sniffy nose. So I made a Charr character for the last BWE named Fluffy Sniffynose, and then my husband insisted that I use the name for real when GW2 came out. We now have the Clan Sniffynose guild because my husband, his brother, his sister, and his nephew also made Sniffynoses.
Belladonna Morte (Sylvari necro)—Belladonna for the poisonous flower, Morte because well, duh, death.
Tess Crankshaft (Asuran thief)—Tess is cute and fits the Asuran naming conventions, Crankshaft because she needed a surname (just Tess was taken) and that sounded appropriate for an Asuran.
My human warrior Invictus was inspired by a poem by William Ernest Henley. A wonderful and amazing poem.
My asuran mesmer Psycho Somatica was inspired on the concept that our mind is powerful enough to create physical manifestations so I thought it perfect for my mesmer. This was a name I used often in GW1.
My asuran thief Violent Delight was inspired by the fact that he delights in settling issues with his daggers, sword, pistols and anything else he can grab.
My human engineer Lunasea is inspired characters I have had in other MMO’s.
Most of my characters are named after either the Kurzick Houses from GW1 or their patron saints. (we were a Kurzick Guild in GW1) My characters are all named Mortis, after my first MMO necro character, so..
Mortis zu Heltzer – Human Necro
Mortis Durheim – Norn Thief
Mortis Vasburg – Human Warrior
Mortis Perahta – Sylvari Mesmer
Then I have one named after a monk I made in Nightfall with a Derv secondary that I used to melee the whole game. It was a blast to play back in GW1 and, little did I know I was kind of making a guardian way back then. Remade that character for this one and kept the name.
Smitten Mittens – Charr (of course) Guardian
My main is an Asura Necromancer named Kierr. Kier means dark and adding an r makes it fit the naming scheme.
My human’s name, Evelyn Verity, I chose because I liked how it sounded. I have no idea what it means.
I forget how I got my sylvari’s name, Lethais. I just know that it’s a misspelling of a gaelic or celtic name because the original was taken.
My norn is named Idony Gestsdottir. I forget what Idony means, but the Gests part of her last name means mystery man, unknown man, or stranger. I thought it was pretty fitting since she’s a mesmer.
My charr’s name is Rhetta Gearhorn because I couldn’t think of anything. I’ll probably remake her at some point when I figure out a better name.
