What inspired your character names?
Solanii- Sylvari Thief. Name means “nightshade”
Quivyrr- Sylvari Ranger. Self explainatory
Ignis Wyrmsblood- Charr Ash legion with a flame legion traitor father. Seriously made that backstory before I actually knew it was a choice in game, lol. Also made a charr engineer named Gear Wyrmsbane
I have 2 humans (lilith deasph and fin deasph). The last part is a made up word. Lilith is a necro (origin from bibilical text) and fin is the last of the deasph to inherit a certain blood trait.
Also have an asura mesmer named Phlucks (so glad i got that one) and a norn guardian named Kontego the Garrison (from the latin word “contego” which means shield)
I also did not post my REAL character names…just altered variants so that no one spams me or something, lol.
“A release is 7 days or less away or has just happened within the last 7 days…
These are the only two states you’ll find the world of Tyria.”
Fallout! cuz i like fallout like everyone else lol
Fallout! cuz i like fallout like everyone else lol
Fallout 3 was bad and New Vegas was worse.
It’s also opposite day
My ranger’s pet bear’s name is Deathclaw.

OMG i want to throw a rock at you!!!!! Fallout 3 was nothing amazing but New Vagas was awesome
Character I have is named Winter Swallow… Its my sister’s name, translated from Mandarin. Beautiful name.
i name every character after the most storied characters related to the toon’s proclivities that I can find in my copious knowledge of anime. (if you’ve seen it on american tv, I probably haven’t used the name)
Shiro Tagachi – from….shiro tagachi gw1
Sylvari Ele.: “Zinnia Of The Frost” A Zinnia is a flower, and like most flowers, they can’t survive for very long in freezing temperatures. By giving her this name, it tells people that she’s stronger than most, and can thrive in an environment where others will DIE.
Charr War.: “Bloody Rahl” I took the last name from the" Sword Of Truth" books. I just added “Bloody” to it because, it fits the blood-thirsty ways of the “Rahl” family.
Asura Ran.: “Lydia Missinshins” I got Lydia from “Beetlejuice”, and just like “Cotton” from “king of the hill”, she seems to be missing shins :P
Norn Gua.: “Mordu Eyepoke” Mordu was the evil looking bear in “Brave”. And who wants to get poked in the eye by Norn?…not ME
Human Thi. “Kylie Killbert” that was a name I used in GW1. No real background, it just sounded good.
I made up all my characters names on the fly, except for my charr, Wenda Soulhunter. I found a charr name generator since I wanted to find something that was deemed “charr compatible.”
Ebon Brandr means “Black (or dark) Blade”
Gestankfaust is the German’ish translation of the Tool song “Stinkfist”
I made Monte Desamos as my first and main char in gw 1 too… My favorite movie and book was Monte cristo… And i loved the name Decimus, but it was too common and my cousin took it as a last name, so i created Desamos! Monte Desamos…
Made mine up on the spot, they have little meaning behind them, it’s not like I’m naming a child lol.
Rozbuska – its “Detonator” in my language:-) I use it for my engineer in Warhammer Online and in GW2 it cant be different:-)
Tekkit’s Workshop
Same name I’ve been using since 1994 for everything to do with computers, online or not. Main character of the book Black Steel by Steve Perry. Only use a diff name if it’s taken. If it was allowed, ALL my toons would be Sleel, “I’m” playing the game, not the toon.
Where it ain’t allowed I make up dumb “last names” so I can still use Sleel, Tun Gestya this time. No, it dun mean anything, just made up a random noise and made it a word. Or incorporate Sleel into a “clan name” and use it as a last name if I can’t for a first. So, if you see a Sleel running around, might be me. Deff me if it’s “_of_Wpg”, use that in some cases, but never in a game.
Lady Rhonwyn comes from a book I read and loved. I’ve always loved the Welsh language and love the sound of Rhonwyn (I have the audio version of those books…)
In GW1, I had several characters (especially the males) with Welsh names (or rather, words translated into Welsh and used as names). In GW2, I took some of those names and changed them to fit the race. Danea became Danna (though, I also have a Lady Danea in GW2), Lady Katlinel became Katlinel Darkeyes.
I wanted to use Eithne (I already had a character Lady Eithne in GW1) but couldn’t as Anet already used it (I found out during the last beta before release…). I couldn’t use my second choice either (Arglwyddes Coeden) as that one was still reserved at that time (it was from my second GW1 account). Nor my third choice: Lady Eithne, for the same reason.
I’m still searching for an Asuranized version of the word “Mercenary” to accompany my Tracker Phloxx.
My Sylvari’s name is ‘Flowre’, because I’m uncreative and ‘Flower’ was taken :p
My Necro name Crash was inspired by the greatest rock band ever made Bon Jovi
Kaliyanei (Sylvari Ele)- Cambodian for beautiful. And I just like how it flows when I type it and it can be shortened easily for others trying to address me.
Ironically, my Human Necro means flower (in Khmer as well), Sinoun. xD
As far as Katreyn (also the name of my Human Guardian), I really don’t recall where it came from. One day I was trying to come up with a new nickname/username, and I had a friend that always purposely botched my name when sending me texts and talking to me, just to annoy me. And it kind of morphed from that.
Human Thief- Akari, I always have a character named Akari. No reason beyond liking how it sounds.
Sylvari Guard- Lor Danas, I liked the movie Willow when I was younger and the babies name was Elora Danan…something about the name resonates goodness so I use a variation in MMO’s from time to time.
Mesmer- Sor Danas, as stated above.
Charr 1-Raven Whitepaw….he’s all black w/white paws.
Charr 2-Pax Pain….Dual Wieling pistols like Max Payne.
Norn 1-Ursa is his first name, I know I know…1 thousand of these running about, but hey, it makes sense. Means bear in latin.
Norn 2-Sorenn Loxx is my necro and a name I’ve used in other MMO’s for necrotic/warlock archtypes.
Asuran Ele-Red Blu Blurr….ok, so I watched smallville for 10 seasons. Sue me.

All of my characters names are Celtic/Irish names, i look for the meaning behide the names, like my necromancer Rhona Seanach, Rhona means Powerful & Seanach means Ancient or Old, and if I like the name and they fit in with the type of character i making (i.e. race, looks & profession) i’ll use them.
I have 4 Norns and 1 Charr all females and all have the same last name.
Recycled some names from work by Jack Vance, and the Judge Dredd comics. One char-name is based on an elite skill.
Jacque – a name that sounds sophisticated
Jackalope – a rabbit with antlers; not sophisticated.
A pretentiously sophisticated and corny animal.
Jaqalope
Charr Legionaire
Dragonbrand
Most are joke names such as Ledengery Miskate and Harry the botter, I like to be remembered and put up a smile if I can
Honor swiftclaw, Tylor hailstorm,Darksoul Arthur and their buddies just don’t cut it for me.
My characters have a mix of both racial(ish) and names i just like.
E.g. Charr Engie- Gorgutz Skarnob
Sylvari Warrior- Arter Choke ( i love puns)
Norn Guardian- Hamma Wreckface
I have more but those are the names i like the best
Romilly is my favorite character from one of the Darkover fantasy books.
Here story:
“Romilly MacAran: The main character of the novel. At age 15, she runs away from home disguised as a boy to avoid an arranged marriage to Dom Garris of Scathfell. In her coming of age, she discovers latent psychic powers, befriends a king and saves an empire.” She does allot of figthin / and wandering throug the forrest / and here psychic powers enable here to interact psychicly with anymals.
I invented/inmagend her to start a family later in life, and al my character are related to that family. In the books “Di” is often used to indicate a bond or relationchip to something else.
In GW1 and now i GW2 is name al my characters “something” di Romilly
examples:
- Luciella di Romilly
- Jaela di Romilly
My character name is Miss Terribad. I have NEVER played guild wars before and i had no idea what i was doing. I knew i was going to be a bad player at the start so i named my character that! I went with the warrior class because i heard it was the easiest to play. I now am a commander on dragonbrand that leads eternal battle grounds everyday with that name! And i am now currently making a guardian named Miss Incredibad!
Miss Terribad
Dragonbrand
The mother of all dragons in one book
I’ve used Patronis Caine since the glory days of Shadowbane, always either a Thief/Assassin/Monk depending on the game classes.
Argyle Connovar and his daughter Megan I’ve had since EQ2.
Davion Hawkwood is in honor of my old guild Leader in EQ1, Hawkwood Company is named in honor of our Guild there called Hawkwood’s Companions, the best Guild I ever joined in all my years gaming.
Aloysius Huxley is a combination of a character from a book series and a writer, any time I need a “brainiac” type character name, that’s the one.
Hawkwood Company
Fort Aspenwood
For my 1st character, I used google to look up viking names, but for the rest of my characters I just created a name that said something about their profession.
I’m always looking for an excuse to post this amazing name generator,
http://www.rabbly.net/gnominomicon/namegenerator.html
Although it may be stated for Gnomish names in World of Warcraft, there have been so many gems in that name generator I just couldn’t pass up.
Also to answer the OP’s question, I always choose names that either have an association to a nostalgic cartoon / story character, or names that just make me smile (thus the name generator I linked).
Just a few random name examples from the generator that make me smile:
Cherila Fivegadget
Maritink Togglewheel
Kinny Jogglebyte
(Oddly enough, most of the male names sound very sexual… so I won’t post those >.>;)
(edited by TheUndefined.1720)
Atropea Belladonna is the latin name for Nightshade, a highly toxic plant. It sounds nice and my main is a sylvari so …
Delayed content is eventually good. Rushed content is eternally bad. ~ Shigeru Miyamoto
When I made my Asura Necro I suddenly knew that her name was Xim. She looks like this is her name. And because I was not really familiar with Asuran name conventions I made it a bit longer so her name is Ximepher or short Xim.
Edit: Oh and I hoped this name would make her seem a bit more evil or dark but that didn’t work out at all. She is way to funny and pretty bad at beeing the gloomy necromancer. xD

My main is a human mesmer called Diamond Mask
Diamondmask is the nickname of a character in the writings of Julian May and the character has extraordinary mental powers- it seemed fitting to me.
I once had someone come up to me and ask me if my name is based on Illusio- I was so chuffed.
In the betas I was once rezzed by someone named Sugoll, which is sort of like the goblin king in the earlier cycle of the stories- incidentally he is married to Katlinel the Darkeyed- mentioned by LadyRhonwyn earlier in the thread.
My human thief is called Crowgirl and is inspired by Charles De Lindt- particularly a poem in the beginning of one of his books
“they both carry a smile to show when they are pleased, they both carry a switchblade up their sleeves”
My Engi is called after my grandmother, since she would have made a great Engineer-
Isabella Katerina
Budchgon … My other half’s Asian name :-)
Engineer named Toolpack Shakur, warrior named Love Muscle, elementalist named Machine Gun Ele. I usually prefer my names in games to be a little silly, don’t care too much for the lore
I went with Jazz standards for GW2…because they are creative and fun
Satin Doll
April In Paris
Minor Mood
Chameleon
Stella By Starlight
80 Warrior – Rytlock Brimston Jr.
80 Warrior – Logan Thackery Jr.
80 Thief – Caithe Jr.
80 Elementalist – Zojja Jr.
80 Ranger – Eir Stagalkin Jr.
Mesmer – Snaaf Jr.
All inspired by the parents.

That name was too long… That’s why I changed it to Darkeyes. Oh, my ele Charr is called Earthshaker…
My character name is Dead Gods Mouse.
It is something that Pyre Fierceshot (think it was him, been a while) exclaims to Gwen when he is released by her & she goes off on a rant, wanting to kill him.
P.S. I play Charr obviously

Rocking Wizard Wars until this mess of a game is fixed…

Awesome! Although I would have sort of pegged him for a Norn- Earthshaker does sort of fit the Charr
My brain.
wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooop (there 15 characters)
All my chars are named Rin Something. I made Rin from my real first name (removed a couple of letters) because I wanted something that sounded japanese. Then I tried to find japanese words relating to the character for their second names. For example, my Necro is Rin Zetsumei (which means death). Though not all my chars follow this method. Three of my chars just have japanese sounding names, Rin Aki for example, my main, was just made up to sound asian (though the word Aki means fall, which could be seen as somewhat accurate as it’s what most of my enemies do after meeting me ).
I was quite surprised when I first played GW1 and found a place named after my character.
I have a guardian named Eman Yllis. Some might think that’s a silly name, but I’ve seen sillier.
I have always used the names of interesting old world saints, ones that have a flavorful background….hermits, vows of silence etc…
Chicken.
OMGWTFBBQchicken
All my characters are based on the name “Shanjo” which I’ve been using in MMO’s since forever and forgot the origin.
Other characters:
Shanual Le Weiss : my elementalist. “Ual” meaning holy in elivish I think, and “Weiss” meaning “White” in german (took this from a game called Nier). Le…..The?
Shan Valshan: Les Miserables :P (Jean Valjean)
oh wait I remember now, I was forced to take the name “Shanjol” because “Shanjo” was taken in this game…….I will find you…….
Alleria Windrunner is probably fairly obvious. (Named after a Warcraft 2 character, 1 letter different because the original was taken.)
Ilex Hedera – It’s the latin genus names for holly and ivy. I was making a character in green clothing at Christmas and feeling uncreative, but not quite uncreative enough to call her Holly. Plus I like the word Ilex.
Danielle Aurorel – Danielle is just a name I like and have always used for my main RPG character for years. Aurorel is a mash-up of Aurora (dawn) and Elen (star).
I’ve also got Wraith Darkblade and Xexxi which were just attempts at lore appropriate names for a charr thief and an asuran respectively.
“Life’s a journey, not a destination.”
A human thief named Bernie Paidoff, after one of the biggest thieves of all time, Bernie Madoff.
Norn Ranger named Great Gonzo, not after the muppet, there was a Ted Nugent album named, Great Gonzos!: The Best of Ted Nugent. Ted Nugent is an avid bow hunter. My bear pet is named Fred, after Fred Bear, the founder of Bear Archery, my other pets are named after arrow and bow parts, Shaft, Fletch, Broadhead etc.
I try to make names that suit the lore. I also try to invent them myself, so it is difficult to say what inspires them. I would not purposefully choose the name of any known real or fictional ‘hero’, but as much as I read, I am bound to mess up things some day. My memory is not infallible.
Norn Guardian – Sigrid Ulfkin. I knew from Eir Stegalkin that this type of a surname is in use by the Norn. Ulf means wolf. Sigrid I like and it fit with with her twin sister’s name.
Human Necromancer – Shenda Alassor. No particular influence that I can recognize. It just sounded right for the character. Of course, with her background it probably should be Lady Shenda Alassor, but since using titles is against the rules that is out.
Sylvari Ranger – Salvia Sage. The name of the same plant in two laguages. No other reason than pleasant memories of sage plant tea helping with a sore throat and I like its soft green color.
Asura Mesmer – Yirka. Just tried to get a one word name that would kind of fit with the Asura. Checked on the internet that it is not some celebrity first to make sure. Apparently there is a town in Israel called that though.
Flavia Sootpaw – Charr Elementalist. In this case the name existed first in my imaginagion and then I made a character to fit. Flavia gave her the yellow coat. Sootpaw comes more from her being fire tuned Elementalist with the Flame Legion Shaman father, but she also does have dark markings on her wrists. ‘Fighing Flame with Fire’ would be her motto.
And the youngest,
Norn Elementalist – Rolf Ulfkin. Cousin to Sigrid and her sister. The first name inspired by a Charr character whose company we enjoyed in game. It also goes well with the wolf theme as it comes from Rudolf, which means ‘famous wolf’. What Norn parent would not want their son to fit that name? (Yes, he is my only opposite sex character. So far.)
