Speculation: Have you done Stronghold during this beta? I have not. But I almost wonder if that A will indicate guild Alliance chat in HoT and you somehow got some bleed-over …?
Means you’re typing in Roman characters (English input). It’s used for other languages via IME.

IME is the software used to change your text input. e.g., typing in East Asian language characters using an English keyboard.
There are a bunch of stupid hotkey snafus that can cause you to change your input if you have IME enabled. alt+shift is the first one that comes to mind.
