What is a "dedicated player"?
Ones who spend large amounts of cash to buy gems to convert to gold to buy ectos?
I have over 938 hours played in this game so far. I only know of 2 other people who have me beat. I’d say I’m a dedicated player. I’ve even spent money in the gem store. I consider myself a dedicated player. I haven’t played any other game since GW2 launched.
With that said, I think ascended gear is a huge mistake that will drive me away from the game if it continues. I have no desire to gear treadmill. Been there, done that, never want to repeat it again.
I have 1050 hours played and 250 euros spent on gem store and almost my legendary done I call myself dedicated GW 2 player.
But I dont care about the ascended gear at all yet. Maybe after I craft myself the legendary I start to care more about it and FoTM.

I hope Anet looks in their database to establish if there is a correlation with liking/disliking the controversial changes to cash spent. I’d like to know not if what they have done is popular amongst a majority/minority of players, but how it all breaks down on a dollars per account basis.
That would be interesting data to look over. I wonder if dollars per account is evenly distributed or not, and if not on which side of these issues it is weighted.
Good question. I thought I was dedicated just for enjoying the game without trying to be the best.
My “end-game gear” is the Durmand Priory set. Sure it’s not up there Exotics, Ascended or Legendaries, but it works for me!
Dedication is essential for success in anything.
I consider myself a dedicated player.
that doesn’t mean Anet consider you a dedicated player though.
currently their definition seems to be players who got to 80 and complained about lack of vertical progression…
Regardless of what they truly found, the above is pure PR to give the new content a good image. The justification they provided is mute since we do not have access to the data ANET itself has. If forum posts can give some insight, then the only “wall” is the kittenet implementation on the means to get precursors.(And i fail to see how ascended gear is adressing that issue)

This, this, this.
I have 100% map completion, two sets of exotic gear for my main, just shy of 500 badges banked for gift of battle after already purchasing my exotic chest piece from badges, 49g banked, an inventory full of blueprints from jumping puzzles, every single inventory spot opened from gems, bank spots purchased, working on getting every dye for my main, and thousands upon thousands oh wvw kills.
I’m dedicated.
And I will never play FotM for ascended gear, and will leave the game if I don’t hear some details about alternative ways to obtain ascended through karma/wvw soon.
I use to play 6+ hours per day and spend extra $ in shop. But according to anet I am not the preferred dedicated player. Those are the elite dungeon grinders who chase stats and gated content.
I am amazed that a corporation says no we dont want you or your money just these players. Why else release that content like that?
So I have taken myself and my money else where and a competitor has benefited to the tune of $200 in their shop and stopped a friend from getting this game because of anet willingness to change direction on a whim.
I hope it works out for them but saying we dont want you is kinda funny since the goal was to make money.
… and stopped a friend from getting this game because of anet willingness to change direction on a whim..
Word of mouth goes very far in the mmo community. I also have stopped trying to get friends to leave wow for this game. The lack of gear grind was my selling point.

What blueprints from jumpig puzzles?
And badges.
I think I have over 400 hours, but I’m not sure as I wasn’t counting. I play almost everyday. And bought at a minimum of $50 worth in gems every month. And I bought my first $50 back in July during the last beta event. I haven’t bought anything this month though. So I spent over $250 if you include the game. ::sigh::
I think I have 3 or 4 pieces of level 80 exotic equipment, and that’s it. I don’t like to play one character all the time, although recently I’ve been doing a lot of farming to upgrade my gear.

I think my investment is about the same. ..
and my credit card won’t be used on this game again if I have to replace all the jewels I bought with gold obtained from converted gems on the false pretense that I would never ever have to do it again.
Simple
NO LIFERS
that’s a dedicated player in my book and in any MMO.
That’s odd. I had my first set of exotics within the first two weeks. What’re you waiting for?
I think you took the whole “most dedicated” thing wrong. I mean… think about it. How exactly should they describe the type of player hitting the Legendary wall? Obsessed? Most no-life? Most willing to waste countless hours of their time in a game?
The phrase “most dedicated” was probably used as a polite way to describe players who had spent the most time playing, and had reached the Legendary wall. You’re reading too much into it.
Apparently it had nothing to do with the cash shop. I spent money with them. I hate dungeon grinds, so this is my reward.
If a person is the “most dedicated player,” why would they be the ones hitting the “Legendary wall.” Would they not be dedicated enough to do the things necessary to get the Legendary?
As I said before, someone needs to do a better review of the marketing materials. Use of the words “most dedicated player” alienated a part of your player base who thought they were because they played the game, enjoyed the game and spent money in the cash shop. Just because some of us did not want gear stat progression, does not mean we are not “dedicated.”
In fact, we bought the game because you said there would be no gear stat progression, only fun. We continued to play despite increasing numbers of bugs. And we continued to spend money in the cash shop despite a sparse selection of interesting items. Is that not dedication? Are we not valued customers as well?
To me a dedicated player is one who plays the game as it was intended, by not using bots, cheats, buying gold or power leveling services, and by treating other players with respect. A dedicated player also sticks it out and gives ArenaNet a chance to fine tune this still new game before calling it quits if they aren’t 100% happy with the way things are going. Dedication is not based on how many hours you play, but rather on how you conduct yourself when you do.
I was at first a little annoyed with this but I don’t think there was intent of it being a backhanded slap to any fan group. So I’m not upset with it. I think it is probably missing the two simple words, “we have found that [some of] our most dedicated players were achieving their set of Exotic gear and hitting “the Legendary wall.” No problem in that. It’s just a signal made by GW2 to players that left because they wanted a different style of endgame to come back so that they could have their ego waxed.

As a business owner I would call anyone spending money in the store dedicated.
:)
Dedicated players:
1) Those who wants to achieve things that others can’t through any means. This includes long gameplay so they can surpass other players, or spend real cash into gems and gold. This is a common practice in every mmorpg. When there’s no gems to gold transaction in other mmorpgs, they always buy cash items and sell them in TP for gold. They use the gold to buy skins or good items that separate them from average players.
2) Players who are not hotel players. Hotel players are those who just want to achieve max stats capped and their favourite appearance just so that they can start being inactive. They don’t want the game to tempt them into login because it’s human nature to climb for the best although it’s optional. End-game hotel players playing pattern are those who only login when there’s special events like halloween and christmas and put the game in their shelves 90% of the month.
This is why horizontal progression games is a big gamble for mmorpg because it can’t afford everyone to be like hotel player if the game servers to live long term.
3) Dedicated players love temptation. They always seek a goal after achieving a previous goal. Casual players hate temptation. When ascended comes out, they complaint so much because it tempts them. When there’s a rare item like halloween chain greatsaw, they complaint so much because it tempts them. When anything attractive somes out, they complaint so much because it tempts them. Casuals want to avoid all kind of temptation while playing the game.
I spend $0.00 on the gem store and get the some of the stuff ppl complain about and I only play 4-5 hours a day. What does that make me?
Recruiting dungeon raiders.

A spendless hardcore player.
Dedicated = Players who are dedicated to achieve goal xxxx. They’re willing to spend time or money to achieve things that average can’t.
Hardcore = Players who wants challenges. If you didn’t spend any money on the game, it means you want to achieve things with a challenge.
A dedicated player is one who never leaves the fap cave.

Only 4-5 hours?? O.o
(Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to play the game for that many hours per day too. XD I’m lucky if I can get half that time though.)
That’s odd. I had my first set of exotics within the first two weeks. What’re you waiting for?
haha statements like this make me feel like I’m playing the game wrong :P I’ve never had enough gold for full exotic gear. Where do you guys get all that money?
Do you play certain content specifically because it rewards you better loot/gold or did you amass your fortunes by casually progressing through the game?
I’ve completed the personal story and almost have 100% world completion with a second character and never made enough gold to give both of them full exotic :/
That may have something to do with the fact that I hate instanced content (dungeons, fractals etc) and that I don’t spend much time in the cursed shore or the new lost shores cause I find them pretty boring and it’s impossible for me to get the dailies there (especially the enemy variety).
A dedicated player is a bot, and never complains about petty things like grind.
So they are actually banning their most dedicated players!
Then GW2 is either not a game, or made by you.
can we not read too much into it ! It was a generalization she didnt mean All dedicated players but rather the majority of dedicated players from what they observed!
And seeing how this ascended gear has evolved I tend to understand thats probably a large number!
I mean we’re seeing it right now in many threads people claiming how they dropped everythign to get the ascended gear as quickly as possible! I am sure they did the same thing with the exotic gear and it was easy to get that in less then 2 weeks!
I’m pretty sure Ascended items are a play to try to keep the hardcore and competitive players in the game until they can get their E-sports ambitions realized.
If the game become a home for only the casual players, any E-sports initiative will be dead on arrival. it should have been in the game from the start, but ANet was probably lacking the manpower to properly support and balance things at a rate that would keep the players happy enough to stick with it.
I’m pretty sure Ascended items are a play to try to keep the hardcore and competitive players in the game until they can get their E-sports ambitions realized.
Most competitve PvPers have little to no interest in dungeons, especially in grinding them, the number of people doing sPvP has already dropped through the floor, most have already gone elsewhere.
The e-sport dream is already dead, I expect Anet realize that which is why they shifted the focus and philosophy of their game.
If the game become a home for only the casual players…
The only part of GW2 that is not casual is tPvP, GW2 PvE is entirely for casual players, all the hardcore Pvers have gone back to games with raids that require a level of teamwork / organisation that you just don’t need for the casual style of 5 man (or zergfest world events) you get in GW2.
