What is legendary in MMO?
OP, There’s hundreds of posts exactly the same as this. Its not unique, its tiresome. If that is your definition of “legendary” then go ahead and attach some deed and story to YOUR legendary. Nobody is stopping you.
The ‘legendary’ part is not the uniqueness, but the grind. Or the money required.

I don’t read every post the forum has from start. I only play the game for 2 months and today I suddenly have the mood to post something about this :P But thank you for sharing. I am glad there are hundreds of people who feel the same way as I do ^^
Rather than money owns everying like the real world we are living as of today. Because I don’t wish to see MMO is purely a simulation/replica of the real world… Should be a place where everyone can dream to be unique. :P
This contradicts the rest of your statement essentially and is the only thing i agree with . You see the great thing about GW is that I can play it the way I want and still get a legendary even if it takes a lot longer than the guy that farmed it.
BBMouse, the vast majority of people will agree with your sentiments. I just think Anet really failed to deliver here.

Hi, I can see where you go. People want to be rewarded when they put efforts into it. That is fine and that should be the result of exotic gears, the most expansive gears buyable.
Legendary is unique and should be harder to get. For example. You won pvp xx times for a xx period and you were rewarded by a legendary item of some title. However if you start losing the matches or you cannot keep up the tournments or whatever conditions, the item is taken away from you and someone else who fullfills the conditions get it. Your character joins the list of its owner history or something.
The point is there is only one legendary item of tht kind and one owner at a time. It does not stay on the same owner forever and old owner joins some sort of honor list to be remembered. :P Just as an example.
Not so keen on ‘win X so many times’, but I’d definitely find it impressive if Legendaries had some sort of challenge attached to them. Maybe an exhausting 3-hour (if perfectly done, of course) jumping puzzle to reach the top of a mountain/structure for the key component to some air-based legendary weapon, or completing every temple in a certain order with a special (suicide-inducingly hard) twist in the same day, or commanding a force to capture SM castle and every garrison and holding them all simultaneously.
Notice how painful to read that is?
It’s because they’d be an outstanding feat to accomplish. One may even call them legendary.

Hi Sostronk, thx for the support :P Though I am not trying to critisize Anet. Gw2 is quite fun to play as it is, and that is why I am posting in its forum and giving some ideas.
I am talking about current trend of gaming. It seems the word legendary = top tier gear. Take diablo 3 as an example. So many legendary with random stats and the end result is some different prices in the trading post. Yeah, it’s about trading again. And with new patches old good legendary may become trash and people just rage quit. :P
I like gw2 having exotic as best buyable gears. At least for the majority of players who farm daily and exotics are good goal (It took me a month to get a full set and runes for one character). For pro players, maybe they will want to get this 1 of the kind overpower legendary sword and join the honorable list of its ownership? Or became a legendary chef who owns a shop in divinty reach in a particular server that people want to take a line to get some special food :P This will +1 to guesting.

Indeed, one has to perform legendary deed to become legendary :P
I understand your concern. This is some kind of pain to get really good stuff playing games. When people play games, they want to relax and get rewards and have fun. So aim for best buyable gears, whcih are good to handle most situations in the game.
Only the dedicated should care about getting legendary. They are not necessary the best gear statwise. Just unique.

Something like thatwould be great.
The legendary system is in a great need of a revamp imo. Force us to go out there and do something epic that makes the word legendary ring true.
I prefer the non glowly intricately designed weapons personally like Eir’s Longbow, Naga Fang and the Ceremonial Swords over the flashy glowing lighty weapons that make you a dead giveaway target in WvW and clash with your armor set.
Changing to make it so it is an actual challenge to get I am on board with. But making it so only 1 person can get it is a very bad idea. This is an MMO with many players playing, playing at different times, different length of times, and frequency, and would artificially lock out content for everyone. If someone wants to take on the challenge and succeed then they deserve to have that legendary reward, and not just because they were the first ones to do it.
Having it for 1 person only takes the “special snowflake” feeling way to far in something that is a game. People do not need, nor does it any good for a game over all, to feel that much uniqueness. There is no reason for it, and it provides no benefit to the game.
Eisberg has a point. I do feel it’s a bit late for that for gw2 changing the legendary since many people already have some, especially there are ascended gears on the way. Would cause a chaos if they do change. It probably would have to be another new game who can design something around that.
As for the snowflake taste for uinqueness, I actually feel what you mean. Though there are business out there that was not looking good during market evaluation. They actually turn out pretty good after the product hits the market. Point is you never know till you try.
They can’t create a lot of complex content (like a huge jumping puzzle) for the small minority actually willing to “work” for a legendary. Especially now where the game is still young and there’s a lot more important things to do.
I agree, it sucks that legendarys are allowed on the trading post when copper mining picks are account bound… i really dont get it…
Stuff where the item is limited in a way where you literally can’t get it isn’t really any fun honestly.
Making it really hard to acquire so “You probably won’t get it, but technically could” is much better. Even if you do end up not getting the thing.
I wouldn’t say all is lost for legendaries. Right now we just have some weapons. They can (I think they even mentioned they WILL) add legendary armor. You also have to figure they’ll add more legendary weapons at some point, possibly acquired differently.
We could have some that are really expensive, some that take doing a bunch of really hard stuff, some that are time gated, some that require being in some top percentile of WvW in some meaningful way, it doesn’t have to be one method across the board. There’s all sorts of ways they could implement obtaining a prestigious thing of some sort, variety is good.
