What is the best way not to get hacked ? And, what are some of the methods hackers use to hack accounts ?

The reason for this question is I came across a thread where a player accused ANET of taking his characters valuables, leaving him with nothing. Of course we all know ANET didn’t do that which only left the possibility of him/her being hacked.

Have any of you been hacked ? and if you were, what actions did you take to make sure it never happened again ?

I was hacked on another MMO before – there is no best way of not getting hacked. A determined hacker would get what he wants regardless of securities you have.

Just – don’t get too attached to things. lol

Most of the time and account gets stolen this doesn’t happen cause its owners computer got hacked, it happens because the owner was stupid enough to use the same password and or email address he used for that game on other forums, portals or whatever.
So, to minimize the odds of getting you account stolen you should use a rather long and not easy to guess password as well as a email address you don’t use on free forums, social platforms or anything like that.
In addition it is always wise to keep your machine trojan-free by using up-to-date anti-virus software and not visiting warez or certain adult-only sites.

As a general rule of thumb: Don’t be stupid, don’t give your email address or password to anyone you wouldn’t also give the keys to your house.

1. Make sure your password is sensible. Don’t make it something someone who knows you well will be able to guess. With the mandatory password change a while ago, ArenaNet redirected players to this comic strip.
2. Use your account information for Guild Wars and Guild Wars only.
3. Be careful of phishers. In case you don’t know, phishing is when someone, usually impersonating in this case ArenaNet staff, will state your account is under investigation and request your account information. Under no circumstances do you give your information to someone else, ArenaNet will never ask for your account information
4. Do not download any hacks or bots, or any similar program that claims to improve your character. These will contain keyloggers or viruses that will steal your account information when you enter it. Not to mention, it’s against ArenaNet’s T&Cs so will get you banned anyway.

I feel the need to repeat under no circumstances do you give your information to someone else, ArenaNet will never ask for your account information

I’m sure I’ve missed some important things, but it’s early and these were the most obvious to me.

For online games get the mobile authenticator, or at least the email one.

have a phone confirmation app for your game. Anet did develop and release one. What it does: when you’re logging in from a different IP you have to type in the numbers that come up in your phone app. The numbers change every 30 seconds so hacking your account gets so much harder.
