What is the more rare item to loot?
precursor by a factor of 100K times more rare than a key…..
really? because i haven’t seen a key drop since like first month of launch
I have had two precursors drop opposed to, maybe, 12-15 BLTC keys drop. So, definitely precursors are the more rare drop.
I never use the Mystic Forge for ‘drops’. Just throw my unwanted sigils, etc. in for the Daily.
I get BL Keys from time to time. Not that rare.
Been playing since pre-release and had my very first (and probably only) precursor drop about a week ago (from a fish in the lake in Gendarran of all places.) I’m the last person who actually needed or wanted one. Go figure.
Sorry you’re having bad luck.
RNG is a pip.
You know whats funny… I have been playing since beta and no precursor. Expected as its the same as many players, really.
Now, last week I looted a key twice, and got one from the daily reward. 3 keys in one week. Last time I looted a key before that (and not from personal story) was around launch. It sort of blew my mind!
“Walk with the pack. In the eyes of Wolf, we are all brothers and sisters.”
haha, cool to see that they can still drop. I wonder if there is a difference between WvW drops vs monster drops as I play more WvW then anything else now
I’ve been playing since the beta and this week I FINALLY had my first precursor drop, a Howl. Not necessarily the one I was hoping for; but it was nonetheless a pleasure to see. Occurred while I was guesting on another server. Just happened to see on GW2 Stuff that the Inquest Golem Mark II was up and joined in on a whim.
RNG can be even more random than you think.
What difference does it make?
Bloin – Running around, tagging Keeps, getting whack on Scoobie Snacks.
From rarest to least rare, from experience (so anecdotal)
Precursors (haven’t had one drop ever – through thousands of gold worth of items into the mystic toilet – still none.)
Ascended weapon/armour items. As far as I can tell, these don’t actually drop, even in fractals – or I’m cursed.
Rare dyes.
BL keys, which I’ve had as drops in dungeons, and rewards for zone completion, are easily a few thousand times more common than precursors or ascended weapon boxes.
Purely anecdotal though.
I suppose that the true rarity of the key lies within the chest itself. The key is just a key, after all. So the true RNG of a key being WORTH as much as a precursor is RNG (for the key) * RNG (of the contents of the chest). That make sense or is it all just gibberish?
I guess I’m in the minority. I’ve had 4 precursors drop and zero keys.
And all who stood by and did nothing, who are they to criticize the sacrifices of others?
Our blood has bought their lives.
I’ve had 5 or 6 keys drop over the past year, as well as received them for zone completion once in a while, and so on.
I have yet to get anything of worth from a black lion chest. Most I’ve ever gotten out of one as far as overall silver value would probably be around 15silver.

These last two are reversed for me, but I’m by no means saying anet’s making it rain rare dyes.
I have been playing since beta and dropped +-8keys and no precursor :s.
I have gotten alot more rare dyes than anything. But overall just not getting items. I think the rarest exotic drop i have gotten was maybe a lvl 76 weapon outside of fractals
2 or 3 keys, 0 precursors.
I have had several keys- never seen a precursor- been here since the beta’s
Keys as drops, never. I have farmed them and gotten from map complete and story complete.
Precursors as drop or from forge or chests? Zero.
Started during headstart way too many hours played.
I’ve gotten maybe a dozen black lion keys.
I’ve never gotten a precursor.
That is all.

I’ve gotten Ascended Rings as drops. Ascended Weapons I hear you only really get from chests, as drops they must be exceedingly rare.
In a span of less than one week a friend of mine received The Chosen and a Wupwup Weapon Chest from opening Tri-Key Chests.
On the other hand, I have never seen a Giant Eye drop. I have seen a handful of Black Lion keys, my best dye drop was White, and as mentioned above I finally saw my first and only precursor drop.
1500+ hours, 1 key, 0 precurser, 2 abyss dye, one white dye, zero ascended chest and i do dungeon everyday.
Not trying to derail the thread but how do you actually see the number of hours you’ve played?
In my time on the game I have gotten one precursor (zap); white, midnight fire, midnight red dyes (lots of other rares but nothing worth more than 75 silver); a dozen keys; about 50 exotics (never counted, this is a swag but is fairly close); 6 giant eyes; dozens of lodestones and a WHOLE lotta items that were only good enough to bolster my Magic Find to 119%. I do use a lot of magic find boosters since I will buy keys as a “lottery ticket” and end up tossing the useless and keeping convenience items like black lion or merchant vendors, bank access and any playing boosters except PVP glory.

You can type /age to see your time spent.
Also, you appear to be a very lucky player.

I saw your posts in the thread on Immobulous so you must be referring to the giant eyes. I spend a TON of time in Orr, I think the best drops come from there and on a good day, a person can easily end up with 100 moldy bags just running from one end to the other.
I got Zap after only 5 months in game, my guildies said it was a waste of a pre-cursor to bust my stones because not one of them had gotten anything close to that combined and they had played GW1 to completion before moving to GW2.
In full disclosure though, I have spent a lot of money on gems (none in the last 3 months because I have enough gold and my main toons (3) are all at exotic or better gear, mostly self crafted). They say money spent doesn’t affect RNG but who knows.
If we aren’t taking in account the keys that drop in the PS, I would say the black lion keys are more rare.
I have had 10-12 BL keys drop in the open world/dailies/monthlies, not counting PS keys anyone can get over the past year.
Never even seen a precursor drop for either my friends or myself. I would say you have a better chance of winning the Fantasy 5 drawing than getting a precursor through RNG in this game.
RIP my fair Engi and Ranger, you will be missed.
In the past year (not including the months right after launch) I’ve had about 5 keys drop (not including daily or map completion). I’ve had 0 precursors drop, even including chests such as the ancient karka that seemed to have a higher precursor rate. However, I have found around 3 unique weapons, such as Belladonna of Dreams.
Honestly, I would prefer to find another Belladonna than most of the precursors :P
