Can anyone explain what is the ultimate goal in this game because every time I am setting up one for myself, A-nets messes it up

- When I hunted the map completion star I had to go through the WvW and play with 5FPSs in those zergs so I can just get those stupid PoIs and vistas. Now they are not included into it anymore.

- When I was glad I got all my traits open, they thought to add more traits and use skill points and money to get them. And now they just open them like before.

- When I decided to grind for the money to buy some legendaries out of the TP then they added new Legendaries so the old ones become obsolete. And the new ones made only by crafting. I despise crafting

- When i thought my character became a Hero after killing the biggest threat in Tyria: Zaitan, A- nets brings up a silvary psyco who raises up another “Biggest” threat: Mordemoth. What will it be next? Another (race) psyco rasing up another “Biggest” threat? Ao we have 5 races, one was, 4 more to go?

- When I thought that reaching lvl 80 with multiple characters was my ultimate goal, A-nets throws in new leveling : the mastery system which makes all my lvl 80’s just a waste of time becasue now I have to get exp for more then my number of lvl 80 to get some elite specialization. So now having lvl 80 written next to your name make you a noob again when others show off their 134 mastery points (aka the new infinite level)
What will be next? A secondary elite specialization with a new zone to grind for new mastery points? I guess so.

and the list can go on.

I am sorry, but no matter how A-net will describe their game, for me it is not an evolving game but a trickery for a time waster where every goal you set up for yourself will be crushed down sooner of later.
They said they don’ t introduce new gear treadmill, but instead they introduced something much worse: grinding millions of exp for illusionary goals which will be shattered with the new expansion because you will never ever reach the ultimate best but instead you will return back to your noob status just feeling better then a super noobs (aka new players)

The masteries were introduced in response to a desire by the community to have horizontal progression. They were developed from feedback accumulated during a long discussion period with the community.

Legendaries. Well the old ones are of course not obsolete. Not sure why you think they are. There are just more options now. As far for crafting, well they require more crafting than the old ones did sure, but they should represent all aspects of the game. I don’t like pvp, but I accept the need to pvp to get such a trophy.

The Wvw Map completion. Well yes, unfortunate, but they changed it based on community feedback. It was the right thing to do for the game. Players like yourself and I are not invalidated by doing it the longer way though.

Yes there will be more “pscyho villains”. We knew that before the game was released. There may even be other threats beyond dragons.

To answer your question though – there is no “ultimate aim/goal”. An MMO simply has to put in the kind of things you have listed in order to progress. To many the game was stagnating after 3 years with only tweaks here and there. HoT progressed the game and set foundations to further that progression in the future.

Also remember most of the changes listed are in response to community feedback. So it isn’t Anet “messing” things up, it is changes made in collaboration with its playerbase.

Apparently some players hated going into WvW to get the PoIs, and there was enough of a hate against it that anet removed it. Anet went with what some players wanted.

- When I was glad I got all my traits open, they thought to add more traits and use skill points and money to get them. And now they just open them like before.

players wanted new traits to earn or to attain by the old capture method in gw1. Players hated the new system, so they went with this new one. Again, players sent feedback and anet responded.

- When I decided to grind for the money to buy some legendaries out of the TP then they added new Legendaries so the old ones become obsolete. And the new ones made only by crafting. I despise crafting

old ones aren’t obsolete. I don’t know how you came to this. People wanted a way to attain legendaries rather than just waiting for RNG to hit or to farm for gold to buy a precursor and to make it feel like more of a journey to earn the legendary. Anet listened and tried to get that feel. So again, players wanted something and demanded anet provide.

- When i thought my character became a Hero after killing the biggest threat in Tyria: Zaitan, A- nets brings up a silvary psyco who raises up another “Biggest” threat: Mordemoth. What will it be next? Another (race) psyco rasing up another “Biggest” threat? Ao we have 5 races, one was, 4 more to go?

you do know there is more than one elder dragon right? We first killed zhaitan, now mord is here, there are still more to go that need to be dealt with when the time comes, and it seems when one falls, the rest get stronger. So yes, every new dragon will become the newest “biggest” threat.

Masteries are account bound, not character.

What will be next? A secondary elite specialization with a new zone to grind for new mastery points? I guess so.

yes, there will be new specializations down the road. yes, of course there will be new zones. So you can gather hero points now in preparation once you get your current specialization to save for the next, or save now and wait if the current one doesn’t fit your fancy.

and the list can go on.

I am sorry, but no matter how A-net will describe their game, for be it is not an evolving game but a trickery for a time waster where every goal you set up for yourself will be crushed down sooner of later.
They said they don’ t introduce new gear treadmill, but instead they introduced something much worse: grinding millions of exp for exclusionary goals which will be shattered with the new expansion because you will never ever reach the ultimate best but instead you will return back to your noob status just feeling better then a super noobs (aka new players)

um…isn’t that the case with every expansion? They just raise the level cap instead and add newer gear. This is Anet’s way of horizontal progression. The masteries don’t really make you more powerful (trying to see how gliding makes me stronger than the other guy), with most just allowing me to reach new areas, fight specialized creatures, and only one I can think of that lets me survive better agianst a certain type of enemy.

Hmmm. So you don’t think they should ever change things around, try different things out, shake things up, give people something else to work for after level 80?

Did you truthfully not expect that the game wouldn’t bring in new dragons to kill after zhaitan?

Be careful what you ask for

You are trolling, right?
- You are angry that they changed things for the better
- You think old legendaries are obsolete just because there are some new skins for them
- You are playing a game in which the ultimate goal is to save Tyria from 6 elder dragons, yet you are surprised there was a second dragon after the first one
- You think not having masteries means you are a noob
- You are angry they added new specialisations which you can get by playing the game for a few hours, days at max.
- and you claim there is more…. wou, I think you should take a break.

Have you ever played an MMO before?

New things to work on will always be added.

I don’t think the old legendaries are obsolete. They will have the same stats and function of the new one. If you want the skin go for it.

The trait changes were growing pains. Sometimes you have to change a system if it isn’t giving the effect. It’s better to change it then leave it broken.

The mastery system doesn’t increase the power of the character. Just gives them access to new areas. Also it is at least account bound.

And yes there will always be a new next boss. If there wasn’t we would have to retire and be farmers or blacksmiths.

With the removal of wvw from completetion it will make it easier for you if you decide you want a star by one of your other character’s name.

And yes more elite specs will be added but I am guessing those are a long way off.

I started playing GW1 at 4 years after the release. I had bought a complete pack with all 3 campaigns and the expansion.
When I started playing and I got to lvl 20 very fast I asked around “What is the ultimate goal in this game?” And everyone answered “It is the GWAMM tittle”.
I started to hunt that title and it took me 2 years and 7 months to get it and the game didn’t change at all. I have had the feeling I am catching up with everyone who was a veteran in that game and in the end I did.
I was not feeling I am getting further and further away from the ultimate goal like I do now in GW2 where i ahve trouble finding the ultimate goal..
And from my knowledge, GW1 is still going strong with no changes at all.

Truthfully, Guild Wars 1 was closer to a single player game than a full MMO. A single player game has pathways to follow to get to the finish line, then you’re done. An MMO isn’t like that, You get in, level, beat the big boss. Do whatever or leave till the next boss arrives, rinse and repeat.

Guild Wars 2 is following the the broad outlines of the MMO gameplay. They might have promised things would be more like Guild Wars 1, but if the population showed it wasn’t enough (by leaving) then of course they are going to change the way the game plays.

Be careful what you ask for

Gw1. Changed a lot over time. You figure you got in 4 years after it started. New classes released, new skills, and new skins all got released with each game in the series. Skills would get buffed and nerfed.

Also GW1 technical isn’t an MMO. It was a CORPG.

I wouldn’t say it’s going strong. It is currently stagnant and in maintenance mode.

Do you still play GW1 every day for multiple hours?

This. In GW2, you have to set your goals yourself.

Also, since GW2 is under development, they will add new stuff every so often. Like new masteries, legendaries, classes, raids, elite specs etc.

Which makes sense, otherwise once you reached your ultimate goal, you would be bored and have nothing to do anymore. And then we would start to see QQ threads, I have all legendaries, 100k gold, all achievements, nothing to do in GW2, GW2 is kitten.

Goals are determined by the player himself and old legendaries aren’t “obsolete” but rather newer options will be on the table. I’m on the verge of completing a crafting goal (all three ascended armor sets) and just need the insignia for light shoulders left.

You could aim for a certain WvW or sPvP rank, tracks (obtaining all glorious armor pieces), story achievements (I like ascended trinkets and the luminescent set so I did those), save up for a weapon like infinite light (my newest long-term goal), etc.

But the true ultimate goal is winning that glorious hero armor, since earning it means I’ve truly mastered the game. Since I really want the champion genius title I’ll likely queue in tournaments as an engineer (needing to win 150 matches = around 300 games played total on the class) especially since scrapper somewhat counters dragonhunter. Since I don’t wanna be carried and actually contribute in a meaningful way I’ll have to watch some ESL videos of engineer and practice 1v1 and 1v2 in guild fighting halls testing different builds and strategies. Even if the information is dated (scrapper didn’t exists before HoT obviously) mechanics and strategies would still be somewhat similar. So research, practice, and when I feel I wouldn’t be a liability on that class go out in the “field” (unranked and eventually ranked arena matches) as Tybalt would put it.

MMOs don’t tend to have one ultimate goal because the idea is that you’ll be able to keep playing them for a very long time and that doesn’t work if you can reach that goal and then have nothing else to do. Even the newer, more structured ones are more like open-world sandbox games than most single-player RPGs are: they offer a variety of different goals and the ability for players to choose between them or, in some cases, invent their own. And yes, new content and with it new goals to work towards are always being added.

Even if you’re not familiar with MMOs I’m surprised you weren’t expecting another big threat after Zhaitan however, since the fact that there are 6 Elder Dragons was one of the very first things we were told about this game and it’s mentioned numerous times both in the game itself and outside of it. (Also, as other people have said, it’d be quite boring for people who like the story if you take down Zhaitan and then there’s no more storylines ever again.)

If you want a game you can finish and then stop playing because there’s nothing more to work towards then MMOs definitely aren’t for you. The fact that there’s always new and different things to aim for is a big part of the appeal for a lot of people.

I’ve been playing since launch and I’ve had a lot of similar goals to you – at first I was just playing through the storyline, and trying to get to level 80 and get all my skills and traits unlocked (although I wouldn’t call that a goal so much as a necessity in order to play). The living story actually started before I finished the main story, so I was doing the two together for a while.

In fact that one is still a work in progress because while I was doing it I decided I wanted to complete the story on every race, then I decided to play every instance, and of course now there’s more living story and HoT to do as well.

While doing that I’ve also made a legendary (which is by no means obsolete just because some different ones have come along) and worked towards getting skins and stats I want for my characters.

I also collect mini pets which takes a lot of time, effort and gold. That’s actually probably my most frustrating goal because on several occasions I’ve had to put everything else on hold to focus on a temporarily available one.

The difference is I do all of these things because I enjoy doing them, not just getting to a point where it’s done and I can stop. It’s a game, you play it to have fun, not so you can reach a point where you can tell yourself you don’t need to play any more. You don’t watch a movie so that afterwards you can tell yourself you never have to see it again, do you?

Which means having new goals added is actually a good thing because it enables me to keep playing, and therefore to keep having fun.

I don’t understand what it is you’re complaining about from an mmo standpoint. Sounds like you just want to be “done” with the game. If that’s the case maybe a single player game is more your style. The good thing about mmos in my opinion is that there is always something to do to progress and that once you’ve done those things more content is added later that will fulfill the desire to improve your character. A good mmo is one that doesn’t invalidate past achievements(which anet doesn’t seem to have done) but allows consistent progression through new content.

Horizontal progression is too much for Anet. I wish they would introduce something better statwise than ascended and actually not buyable/droppable – only crafting. It is riddiculous that ascended gear is just 10% better than some 50g exotic set.
Truth is that based on horizontal progression only Anet will lose more and more people. They can’t create content that would be enjoyable forever. For example, im not an altoholic so i don’t need to farm gear and stuff.
I am not into pvp since i don’t want to learn skills and tactics to play the kittening game properly (like thief is pure kitten when it comes to 1v1….. ekhm “assasin” my kitten.
I am not into fashion and trying out clothes and skins because that doesn’t impact the game at all – i have 1 cool skin or 2 and i stick to them.
And lastly WvW is pretty much destroyed by unbalanced matchups and laggs. At least for me, i don’t like having 10 fps and getting wiped all time long because enemy zerg is 2x bigger.
So what is Anet gonna do to make us play? Story is cool but only for a week. Fractals are repetitive (did they even add something for last year?) so are meta events on maps (kill trash, move, kill trash, move) . New maps look cool though, so those are like 2-3 days of exploration.
So seriously, only reason for me to play the game is just gaining gold. I gain gold so i can some day enjoy some actual CONTENT that is nonexistent right now.
Btw, raids are ment to be done once per week – another time gated content because players can’t get rewarded if they decide to spend more time in the game right?
I still have hope but after HoT it is slowly fading away.

When we see that someone have this kind of dilemma what Ronah Lynda have, we should be creative, supportive and friendly. This kind of posts are like calling help, before they are quitting. Now to the Ronah Lynda:
- Yes I agree that this game have been change a lot from start. Those changes have not always been best ones. Playing this game is plain pain time to time. Some goals are getting further and furhter, specially for those who don’t have much time to play this game.
- You ask very good question; What is ultimate goal to this game? I think that ArenaNet’s basic idea is have fun while playing this game. They have succeed in this way varied. Some things are fun, some things are boring. Those who want to grind same events time after time after time, they like it. But there are also those people who don’t like run like headless chickens around of the map. For those might be a hard to find some entertaining in this game. I am one of those persons. I can run a little time and doing same events, one or two day and night cycle and then I it start to feel like, well I am headless chicken. I start to hunt Mastery points, strongboxes and so on. I don’t get much xp, but at least I get those Mastery points. Or I just pick one map and decide to harvest every node from there. If that map is undone I will do same time map completion to that map and get xp, even it is in Core Tyria side. When I finish I sell all things what I just gather and I got money. Droppings are bad in this way. Even I have played from head start, I have never got any precursor or valuable droppings. So I call my account blue and green account.
- If you have little time to play. Make a schedule. Yeah that sounds crappy, but listen up. One day you can do those headless chicken runs. Some another day you could open mastery points. Third day harvesting day. Fourth open maps and tag as many events as you can find. Even if events are failing, you get xp. Fifth day you could do one jumping puzzle. Sixth and seventh day story days How does that sound?
- I hope Ronah Lynda that you are not leaving us. If you have hard to find some goal in this game. Stop a while and think, what do you want to do the most in that moment. What you think is most important goal in this game. If it is gathering money and get legendary. Do it. You can do it. Just make one goal and keep it up. Anet might try to mess up your goal by listening most vocal players and forgot those silent ones, but keep up your goal. You can do it

No game will be able to retain every player that tries the game. No game. Not even GW2. And no company should strive to be the first one to have a game that retains everyone who tries it. Because they will fail.

You can do it

do you even read what he is asking for? it is completely unreasonable! to be honest I think he is a guild war 2 hater!

Truth is that based on horizontal progression only Anet will lose more and more people. They can’t create content that would be enjoyable forever.

This is right. The mastery system they created is not on optional horizontal progression but it is a mandatory progression. The most simple way to see this is that now players over lvl 80 are showing their (infinite) numbers of mastery points and not their max level.
Now being lvl 80 falls in the same category with the lvl 1-79. Besides the fact that it is quite a griding to get to the max level without the boosters, tomes and scrolls for a new player, now it is not even important anymore becasue you don’t show off your mastery points.
If A-net wanted to make optional horizontal progression then they should have kept the lvl 80 as a goal and not show off the mastery points people have. I am sure with the new expansions (aka boxed Living Stories) they will increase the number of masteries. Imagine the cruel psychological hit a new player will get when he will see a player with 1240 mastery points next to their names instead of lvl 80.

- When I decided to grind for the money to buy some legendaries out of the TP then they added new Legendaries so the old ones become obsolete. And the new ones made only by crafting. I despise crafting

I stopped there. The problem is that you aren’t thinking rationally. Anet can’t do much to fix that.

I don’t have opinions. I only have facts I can’t adequately prove.

Yes, I feel cheated by A-net becasue of introducing the new legendaries when at the beginning they said the legendaries are the ultimate goal.

In other games, your “legendaries” become useless once the next expansion hits. Here, legendaries are guaranteed to be best in slot forever! They are and remain the ultimate weapons.

Just because they add new legendaries does not devalue your old legendaries. Having an old legendary is still a great achievement (unless bought by real money…), and you should be proud of yourself if you achieve that. I don’t see why new legendaries would devaluate that.

Why do you care? You stopped playing long ago and only keep tabs on it by logging in for a daily reward and reading. You have no plans to come back as “it is really not worth it for me.”

No, I don’t play GW1 anymore and the only thing i do nowadays in GW2 is the Log-in Wars. I lost interest in this game long time ago when they turned it into an Achievement Hunting game. I follow it closely tho through blog reports, news, forum but I am not getting involved into it anymore. It is really not worth it for me.

Be careful what you ask for
ANet may give it to you.

This is something I agree with. When somebody looks at a character, they should see the level, not the mastery points. This current setup has the potential to be worse than the achievement points (regarding parties demanding a certain amount).

You just described any MMO, every MMO, ever. There is no ultimate goal. It’s an MMO. But I hear The Legend of Final Mario Fantasy and CODfish Modern Halo have clear cut, neat, ultimate goals.

The only ultimate goal we may have is when they have an idea for GW3.

For the love of the high damage, high mobility, glass cannon. Thief to the bitter end.

Ultimate goal: Enjoy the game.

ps: several more elder dragons to go. Jormag, Primattorik (spelling?), Primordus (the real great destroyer, gw1 lore), an underwater dragon maybe? At least the mordremoth fight is 1000% > than the zhaiten one)

ps2: this game is a lot about sideways progression. You don’t get new loot scales making old loot obsolete, according to the manifesto exotic will always be easy to get and top tier (w/ the exception of ascended later added for fractals and not really needed elsewhere) Thus its not about stat upgrades but about new and cool skins. Same with the mastery system this way lv 80 raids will always be a challenge and mean something.

I may be missing something really obvious here but how does other players being able to see how many mastery points you have turn it into mandatory progression?

I can see that in certain situations other people might want you to have a specific mastery, but the overall number of points you’ve got wouldn’t tell them that so it’s pretty meaningless.

Or is it simply that it’s a way to compare your progress to other people’s? In that case it’s no more mandatory than the star for map completion which many people have never bothered to get and others get only because it’s needed to make a legendary.

It just like how it used to be with AP. You would see groups that would list a minimum amout of AP to join. Even though AP wasn’t a good way to tell it was the only thing these people had to go by. Now they will have MP to go by. In my opinion MP shouldn’t be shown, bit it doesn’t bother me that much.

The ultimate goal?

This is an MMO, therefore the ultimate goal is to waste time… <err> <cough, cough> … to immerse oneself in a virtual world and take part in numerous events and activities that simulate being in a given setting, especially combat. MMO’s come complete with long lists of things to waste time doing… <err> <cough, cough> … to enable long-term goals so that we don’t notice the content is getting old… <err> <cough, cough> … to extend one’s enjoyment of the game.

Take your pick.

In GW1 the ultimate goal was to beat the story, capture all of the elite skills, and get obby armor. Maybe to get perfect stat rare skins

Then Factions came out and there were new ultimate goals. More elite sklls, new elite armors, new rare skins, a new story.

Then came Nightfall. New skins, skills, story, and heroes to collect and build.

Then came GWEN…

This concept of a final ultimate goal didnt exist any more in GW1 while it was being developed than is the case in GW2.
