Not everyone is obsessive, right?

Some possibilities could be:

Speed Demon:
I finish all content as quickly as I can then I start watching for more content determined to be the first to finish. Once complete I can tell other players what to expect ahead. I revel in my knowledge of the game and love to share it.

Explorer: I locate every inch of the map and find every crevasse, nook and cranny. If something is missing I become obsessed until I find it. I don’t care how much it costs. I am only satisfied when everything and I mean everything is located. The exploring extends to dungeons, crafting and achievements too.

Power-monger:
My goal is to gain the best gear in the game, armor, weapons and whatever I need to crush every opponent and control everything. If I don’t have the absolute best stuff out there I find a way to get it no matter what.

Add some more.

Part of my interest is in what percentage of and how many types might exist. I’m sure we must fall into categories that Anet has somewhere, more than just PVP-PVE. I am curious how they decide to make content for the different types and if they use percentages. Maybe a poll would be better. It would still be interesting to see where each person places themselves if honest about it.

I am: Explorer.

I fall in the “awesome” group. Other than that, I’m a:

I’m a PvE Completionist. I’ve got no interest in PvP or Crafting, but I will – and must – hit every mission, every Dynamic Event, every jumping puzzle, every mini dungeon, everything … One of the great things about GW2 is that you don’t outlevel your quests like you do in other games … so I won’t suddenly find out I’m way too high level for early quest X to get any xp or loot out of it.

But I’m also a Casual Completionist, so while I gotta hit everything, I don’t have to hit it right now, this instant. I like to take my time and really enjoy the sights, NPCs, searches, etc.

Explorer: yeah. but i’m slow. highest world completion is 65% and i started from day -3 sooo yeah. go casual slow!

Power-monger: hmm yeah i like this as well. but not in a hurry.

Casual Completionist: i would like to complete all PvE stuffs … one day!

ok, i guess i’m a casual-want-to-do-it-all-eventually gw2 gamer.

casual-competitive PvE:
I play with casual players, and with hardcore pve players as well.
I do not strive to be the best but i want to be able to be accepted in any Group.

I used to play www also….since some Patches made it unfun for me….

I do not play PvP for choice…..i came to mmorpgs tired of competitive fighting games and their “communities”.

GW2 balance:
A PvE player is supposed to avoid a 1-2 second 1 shotting aoe.
A WWW player is considered uncapable of avoiding a 5,75 second aoe for half his health.

I’m an Alt-aholic. (Not on your list)

I have 35 characters. 12 level 80’s.

I bumble about doing this and that and if I get bored I change characters and do something different. I like this game a lot but have found the leveling of characters more fun than after 80 activities, which I also like just not as much.

I definitely don’t race through anything, I actually go deliberately slow at times just poking about maps and playing with oddball builds and weapons not usually seen in use.

Stupidly enough my absolute favorite thing to do in game is to kill the champ troll in Queensdale over and over and over again…

Chaotic distracted, I’m right there with you … which makes being a completionist really difficult. Tonight I went into the game saying “Okay, I only have 1 heart, POI and Vista to get in this map to finikitten … all I gotta do is … hey, I wonder what’s happening up here? Can I solo this DE? What happens if I go in here? Ah crap, three hours and I gotta take a break … what was I logging on for again?”

I find that what kind of gamer I am tends to change from time to time. Pre-legendary (before acquiring the legendary), I was more pve hardcore. I would make sure to do daily fractals, and do at least cof 1 and 2 at least once per day, do multiple dungeon runs for the tokens and the coin, etc. Post-legendary, I’m more a “what do I feel like doing today?”. Currently, that means wvw, but not all the time, which is why I bought a new char slot to try out a thief. :p

Lifestyle gamer. It is my primary hobby, even though I don’t game that much compared to ‘hardcore’ gamers. People know me for being a gamer, even though I’m pretty casual by elitist standards. I’m the kind of person that buys a third monitor just because my new videocard has a spare connection.
I’m the kind of person who takes a week of holiday once a year to go on a complete gaming binge. I’m also the kind of person who’d never skip a party for a videogame.

I’m more of a perfectionist, I’m not too fussed about anything the game if I don’t start doing something, but once I do I have to finikitten completely no matter what. Like for example exploring maps, I usually feel like I have to 100% a map before I go to the next (there are some I leave though, mainly just because I prefer other maps but working my way back to them for 100% map completion). It’s also why I don’t want to start a legendary yet because I know I won’t be able to take it casually and am enjoying that casual side to the game for now.

Edit – Not sure what the deal is there but apparently finish and it with a space between the 2 words is worth a kitten! Oh well, free kittens all round.

I’m a very competitive player, when it comes to real competitive games (or sports). However, I’m super laid back and casual when it comes to non competitive games like MMORPGs and GW2.

When I log in to GW2, I just want to kill stuff, better if stuff I’m fighting is actually challenging. If you invite me to a group that’s gonna involve killing stuff, I’m in, regardless of reward, or whether I’ve done the content or not. I also like soloing non soloable content despite losing over and over, only to test how long I will last the next attempt.

When in a group, I dislike skipping content, the most, especially skipping things that are a tough fight. I don’t mind total newbies in a group and I don’t mind losing because of lack of experience. I enjoy figuring things out for myself, and I enjoy observing newbies figuring things out for themselves. I hate losing because of players with bad attitude and lack of ‘team’ mindset.

Nah, that’s just Alt-curious, a real Altaholic will have different classes in different races and different flavors to see how they all taste when mixed just so …

Not to mention ya might want a male and female of the same class and race just to see how different they look and feel when doing quests and talkin’ to npcs.

And sure you can just switch your P/P Thief’s build to D/D anytime you want … but it’s different if you play it that way from the start.

This is the first game I’ve played where I liked one character enough that I wasn’t alting all over the place.

Im a mix between explorer and Power-monger.

I like to explore and enjoy all the little things, yet i want to be competitive aswell so having the gear required for that is important to me, however i am happy aslong as i know i will get it and im in no hurry to do so.

For example i could do fractals to get ascended, but i dont want to and i am more than happy to just wait and get them with Laurels.
Also i tend to get obsessed with getting good at playing my class and knowing the enemy classes, i think this also contributes to the Power-monger :P

Oh and yea, i need my character to look the way i want it to, so when it comes to ’’objectives’’ in the game it usually ends up being ‘’get money to buy this look’’ or ‘’run this dungeon till i get this chest’’

One type is missing here imo. In other games I was the “nothing without my guild, I use games as a social activity” type. I was spending ages to chat with my guild and to do nonsense-stuff with them. Unfortunately I haven’t found many people here to do such stuff… yet.

I also enjoy WvW from time to time as a team-activity even though I’m not very much into it.

I’m pretty much all of those to an extent.

I explore everything and like collecting achievements and finding all the game’s secrets. Super Adventure Box recently was a nice touch for that, as are jumping puzzles~
I still like the storyline in online games (if they have one). I watched and read pretty much everything in GW1 and GW2 that I came across.
I like to do new content once it’s released and get new stuff and help others figure it out. Don’t really care about being first though it just ends up that way usually because I’m impatient.
I love PvP so of course I want and aim for the best weapons and etc to mutilate people, unless it gets too crazy: I don’t like being forced to do insane grind or jump through a million hoops to get it; like in games such as Aion’s ridiculous AP grind. Or when DCUO added its annoying ‘socketing’ system that forced PvPers to grind PvE raids for hours on end for the best PvP gear, or games with obscene Lvl caps that form a huge difference in power, and so on.
I enjoy the community in games and messing around in chat and forum as well. Could throw in the ‘cosmetic junky’ as Morrigan mentioned. Reskinning or cosmetic slots are two of the best video game inventions.
All in all though, I still play for fun above all else and aim to eventually do/complete everything. That includes both PvP and PvE.
As long as it doesn’t torment me too much, then it stops being fun. Unless it’s that kinky masochistic torment Dark Souls throws at you, or the Mad King Clock Tower.
I will categorize myself as a Moist Gamer. Just so it has a name. Everyone loves Moisture.

I’ve spent so many transition stones buying ugly lvl 80 exotics and pumping those stats into nicer looking but now equally useful first act armor. (but then I have to go and buy another set of that armor when I go into that region again, unless I’ve found somethin’ else I like in the mean time) My wardrobe is the biggest money sink in the game for me – spent seven gold the other day on just one coat, nothing really special about it except I hadn’t seen the design before so I had to own it.

We really, really do need a separate wardrobe section in our inventory to store and organize all these outfits.

Casual Content Crusher – Playing 2-3 hours a day every other day I complete most MMO’s in a few months. GW2 was my latest victim. It’s kind of sad really, you would expect games to get more complex with more things to do, but the opposite has been true. I love WvW/RvR or any objective based PvP that makes you use your brain, I hate arenas because it ruins a lot of games.

At this point I’m probably more of a log in for the daily and a little WvW type player until new things are added honestly

I play GW2 to relax primarily, so in – game I tend to wander aimlessly pretty much. I like to see my characters advance in skills and traits, get better weapons and armor, and so forth, but I’m not obsessed by it. That being said, I do try to always do the dailies for the karma and laurel.

I’m also not the most gifted when it comes to “uber combat skills” or whatever. I like to take things slow and steady. After a long day of tight deadlines, I’d rather just lay back and relax. That’s what I’m here for.

I can’t keep objectives down for long term. I tend to float around quite a bit.
I’m the type who would be in Diessa Plateu and do events as I encountered them out of sheer curiosity, somehow get roped into a dungeon because someone had a free spot in Caduceus’ Manor, start escorting Pact soldiers up a Temple in Orr, and this all ends with my poor character naked with broken armor fighting a Blood Witch wondering how the heck did this all happen?

Worse yet, my alts would be right near him replying, “Heck if I know! Did I just slaughter every Moa in the Krytan region while I was active?”

I’m the “let’s do some personal story, hey what’s that, oh look can I get in here, wow that’s a cool looking character, I fell down a hole! there are shiny’s in here, skritt I’m dead. Where was I going again” type of player

I guess I have a bit of a lot of those things. I don’t care for PvP, but I do like WvW and I mainly PvE. I like all aspects of the PvE world.

I like dungeons, fractals, and main story content. I always partake in the temporary content. I’m not married to any of them, however. I like them all. It depends on what I am in the mood for.

As far as characters go. I like what I consider the best looking armor. That is different for everyone. So if there is something I want, no matter how difficult it is to get, I will find a way. I want Meteorlogicus. I will have Meteorlogicus.

Having said that, I am in no hurry for any of it. I am not a speed player. I like enjoying the game and all it entails as far as exploration, personal stories, side quests, hearts, etc. It is fun for me to see what’s out there, not just get to level 80 and miss the show along the way.

I’m a very goal oriented player. I’m only interested in playing so long as I have a goal I can see. The early game kept me really busy as I made it my mission to explore the maps, complete every heart, completing my personal story and whatnot. So long as the game gives me something concrete and explicit to do, and it’s actually accomplishable (hello, WvW exploration on a server that’s never been the green server) I’m happy.

I’m also happy making buds in PvE. I’m really not a PvP or WvW kinda guy. I just want to play the game.

The best thing from the game so far and what I expect more from future updates are:
.- map
.-dungeons
.-guild missions (or any guild or group activity)
.-Story and lore (it is a little dissapointment so far but I expect grat things from the lore that this game has)

I focus mostly on PvE. I have to 100% every map I’m in and at the same time continue to perfect my skills and dominate every dungeon with my guildies.

At least that’s what I’d like to say. Most of the time I’m like Morrigan though and get easily distracted by everything happening around me at the time! XP

I also obsessively collect everything and have taken to using my guild’s bank to dump off extra crafting materials I don’t have space for. No one’s allowed to touch it, of course. This is just for viewing pleasure.

I also have tons of dyes and probably spend way more time than I should playing with different color combos. XD

I’m a hardcore-casual hunter-gatherer altoholic. I’m definitely not hardcore, but tend to study games, read theorycrafting, and min/max to a degree. I think I’m somewhere in between hardcore and casual. Historically, I’ve loved gathering and crafting and am somewhat sad that it’s not viable in GW2 like in other games. I still gather, but no crafting except to level and complete a daily.

Altoholic-cred: I have 13 characters at level 80 and one of each profession. (I couldn’t believe the guy earlier with 35 characters /kneel.) Of course I’ve doubled up on some professions because I wanted a bad kitten Charr warrior and a huge Norn warrior, and of course, a human warrior that I could actually jump with. One of my major goals is to have a T3 cultural set for each character. And, someday, Bifrost for my guardian. It’s funny, I hated the staff leveling as it felt so weak—now, I love it.

I’m just a wanderer, slowly building up loot while looking for what’s interesting to do.

Alternatively, I could be a forum warrior, but that’s really no fun since you get one shot.

Personally I get on for different reasons. Some days I grind, some days I meddle around, some days I want to WvW, some days I just want to stand around and check out different items, (armor, weaps, crafts etc).

But my favorite: Getting online with a good alcohol buzz and gaming with some buds, maybe mess with some peeps

I also have tons of dyes and probably spend way more time than I should playing with different color combos. XD

I’m afraid to do that, even with the undo button. I have a mix and match set, and I worked hard to get my look to where it is. I don’t want to risk undoing it at this point. haha.

It has been interesting to read, since i started this thread, how everyone’s different personalities of gaming fall into somewhat similar categories. I haven’t seen anyone who is really a Greedy Auction Banker or a The Consummate Crafter. Are there some others out there who live life as The Great Gatherer or who make little white creatures go poof as in The Mighty Wanna Be Warrior or even The Underwater Custom type who loves fighting like aqua man.

I decided that I am also a solo social gamer. I wander around doing solo things while blabbing with friends on Skype.

I think I’m currently looking for the big thrills. I’m doing my dailies and leveling a mid-level character only to prepare for the next big dungeon crawl. That’s my favorite thing to do… Get with my friends and push through a big challenge. What would this be called? Adrenaline-Junkie?

I was all three.

Speed Demon = First month I couldn’t get enough, I didn’t play the game like “MUST BE FIRST, MUST BE FIRST.” I played it because I had been waiting for it for years and so had all my Guildies/Alliance members.

Explorer = That’s who I was in GW1, Explorer/Newbie helper. Since no help really required I went out and explored the world. it was amazing until I broke my nose when I ran into a wall with “THOUGH MUST SHALL PLAY WVWVW TO CONTINUE!” which ended my exploration career.

Power Monger – Got my Main all kitted out in Exotics, can’t be arsed with kitten -ended. Sad part is, and it’s the reason I uninstalled again. I just got my Guardian to 80 and can’t even get her any exotics. Unrewarding is unrewarding.
