When developers make a game, normally they focus in what kind of players are going to play the game.

For example:

WoW: strong game but population is focused on teens and child, cartoon graphics.
Lineage 2: grind game, population is focused on mature people, dark graphics
League of Legends: very popular game but with bunch of kids, there are exceptions of course, same cartoon graphics. I know this is not a mmorpg.
GW1: Very popular long time ago, focused of all ages. very detailed graphics and colorfull.
GW2: What do you think is GW2 focused?

Plus I want to know how old are people here.

Im 32, comments

An amazingly fun game with a wide range of difficulty that appeals to players of all ages and skill levels (although there is a small very hardcore/difficulty focused group of players that believe the game does not offer extreme tests of their prowess).

There is a reason it’s so popular

I’ve played this game with people as young as 12, and as old as 60+. Myself, I’m well into the upper half of that age span.

I’d say the game is targeted at explorer and socialiser type players, who prefer to play more casually and don’t need a carrot to chase all the time. Graphics are colourful and detailed, and look like a pretty painting at times.

Very wide range of ages.
Focus is not what ‘hardcore’ (whatever the heck that means) want apparently.
Yes graphics are great, a neighbour was looking over my shoulder one day and that was the first thing she said.
You really need to be able to set your own goals, people get lost so easily.

The exact same as WoW minus the raiding endgame. Which who knows maybe ANet will add raids one day.

I think personally the game has a skill check in dungeons and various strats, its just like in any other game the player base has figured it out and min/maxxed it by now. If WoW left its 5 man dungeons and never updated them for about a year they would be speed cleared and snoozefests for the endgame players as well.

It isn’t targeted towards Mature only which something like TSW is, but a mixed bag of teen/adult like WoW is.

The writing is cringe worthy though.

Truthfully, i no longer know. Moreover, i don’t think that devs know as well.

A cash-shop grindfest

You never played Korean MMOs, did you? Then you would know what grind game and cash-shop based means.

Anyway, GW2 is a PvE game that thinks PvP matters, targeted to casual players of any age.

Just because those have worse grind and cash-shop policies doesn’t mean GW2 isn’t grindy and cash-shop based.

Alright then, so … is there any MMORPG that isn’t “grindy”.

The only game that felt less grind than GW2 in my opinion was GW1, but of course I didn’t played all MMOs out there, and I’d love to know if such game exist, if you don’t want to name the game here, send me a private message.

DaoC and Eve Online are far more grindy games than GW2 could ever hope to be. (Eve grind is in a class all its own) And this game is only grindy if you make it that way, imo. (Eve, DaoC, Everquest, and other older mmorpgs required the grind if you wanted to get anywhere in the game)
I would agree with one of the posters above, who said that GW2 is not geared towards hard core players. It may not be super casual, but it is definitely not thinking about the hard core mmorpg player most of the time. Which is good, imo.

I am a few clicks above 50 in age…….probably one of the reasons why I like the game so much.

Gw2 is an internet show that kicks out tiny story episodes (30-60minutes) every 2 weeks, with huge breaks after 4-6 episodes (2-3 months) with no goal or finale in sight. Most of the time episodes feel random and unconnected, quite a mess of story writing.

If you just started playing the game, its a huge single player rpg with option for coop, with an average story. Combat is great but most of the time you just mash 1 and mobs die.

There is no late game, loot is terrible, rng is hell, and content is boring. There is no option to stand out from others in any way, everything is just bought off of tp or gem store.

Gw2 cries for an expansion, cries for massive updates to every aspect of the game, cries for “hardcore mode” injection because casual disease is ruining this game.

p.s. I guess I might get banned again from saying stuff anet doesn’t like, so forget everything I said before, Gw2 is awesome, buy gems with real cash, enjoy the best story out there, LS is best thing that happened to mmos, dungeons are so good you can play them over and over for years, fractals are the most rewarding content ever.

Guild Wars 2 is definitely a game that is trying to be different compared to Guild Wars 1. The combat system differs greatly but that was it’s main draw in for me. I did not personally enjoy the point and click to win battles, did not find it actively engaging (or to put it blunt BORING!) That is mostly why games like Archeage and WoW do not really interest me because of this type of combat. Even Guild Wars 1, I would find myself yawning at these old MMO mechanics.

The UI was also another friendly factor to the game, I did not feel overwhelmed and I was actually able to take in the lovely sights of the game without having to have the UI take over 20% of my screen. The UI also felt user friendly and easy to pick up on.

But is the game grindy? From my standpoint, its optional grind. The game only enforces grinding for equipment you don’t really need but you would like to have anyways (Ascended/Legendary items, Skins, gem shop items, ect.) Yes there are things you can grind for just for completion sake (IE: collecting all the dungeon skins and achievements) but it all depends on how you go about the grind to make it fun.

The game itself is trying to cater to a larger audience, but in the process of doing so it also pushes some audiences away, such as the GW1 players. MMOs tend to hit and miss with its large audience as each person wants something different. The game has been out for 2 years and personally I’ll give it one more year in an attempt to redeem itself for the small content output. By then maybe I’ll hear news of an expansion but I doubt it.

Grindy? Do you even know what grind means?
For you, killing a mob, might mean grindy…idk what definition you have for “grind”.
GW2 is the best mmorpg if you have a job or you are a student, you can play it ina hardcore way as well, but if you don’t have much time to play games, this game is for you,a beautiful world with beautiful people.

Guild wars 2 is a nice game with many facets. It takes about 2-3 months of quite heavy gaming to get 1 character through world/ story/dungeon unlock/dungeon master. After this time you notice you just did 1 professions and others feel different behave different and have their own feel.

IMHO the story line up to say lvl 50 is great but narrows to the climax, which wasn’t very climactic to end with.

As armors and gear of exotic level are enough to finish all content without worries. I must say there is no actual need to grind. most skins available form normal exotic weapons will give your character a decent look. some of the gem-store armors I like a lot, but some do not have that attraction to me to spend money on them.

Ascended and legendary gear is the “end-game” as this is an open end game and eventually you might think you’ve seen all. Which hasn’t happened after getting 15 characters at lvl 80 and 7 with full map.

Dungeons are generally “easy” as long as you did them a couple of times. some paths take a bit more perseverence. There are long and short paths. Rewards tend to be better then pve, Fractals is an exception: It requires great investrment and pays nearly nothing.

I would like some more area;
not a piece of map like Dry top or SW;
but a big area, like the whole

- Maguma jungle & Woodland cascades, for mordremoth
- (or the crystal desert & scavenger’s causeway,) krakkaltorik
- deldrimor front& norther shivs, jormag
- the sea of sorrows & straits of malchor, water dragon
- or the ring of fire & blood legion homelands), primordius

I’ve come to a point where I actually would enjoy a more story lines till the death of mordremoth… (and krakkaltorik/primordius/jormag/“water dragon”)

I played 3400 hours yr 1, my second daughter was born a couple of months ago and Inoticed playing 1800 hours yr 2 now spending spend 2-3 hours daily now, partly invested in guild chores… I consider myself a fanatic casual player. I’m no no-lifer, no elitist. no farmer… I sometimes just open Gw2 on a second screen and watch people running around LA. whicghh also accounts for the high amount of hours played.

23 lvl 80’s, 9 times map, 4ele, 4ncr, 3war, 3grd, 3rgr, 2thf, 2msm, 1eng, 1 rev.
Been There, Done That & Will do it again…except maybe world completion.
