What motivates you to play ?
I set my own goals. By being familiar with the sandbox genre I can be creative and quickly think of what to do when I achieved something. Got a level 80? How about getting full world explore? How about getting pretty skins? How about getting a legendary? How about getting all 8 professions to level 80?
Done all that? Get into a guild made out of friends, help other people and play in the worst way possible while dying all over the place and laughing on skype or teamspeak.
There’s lots of things you can do in this game. And lots of different ways to play it.
Fun and achievement (overcoming challenges, not obtaining in-game rewards).
If WvW did not exist I would have stopped playing this game a long time ago. Seriously I see people playing PvE all the time farming the same terrible missions over and over again and I really wonder how they can bring themselves to do it. The PvE in this game is very limited.
I use the game to relax. So I explore and do random stuff I feel like at the moment.
shinies and playing with friends
Oh, and I like hitting things really hard with a hammer since I’m unable to do that in my 9-5 job.

My friends are a big part of it – I love to log on and hang out in Tyria with them, even if it means just finding something to do.
As much as it may undermine my rep as a female gamer, I really do love dressing up my characters :P I’m a casual player, I don’t need epic gear – but I will go to some lengths to make a character look awesome. That’s often the goal that motivates my play at any given time, a particular armour set (it was true in GW1 as well).
WvW – PvP takes a long time to get boring. I’m always looking for that next player to really challenge me. Between meeting those gems, I"m busy throwing myself at impossible odds for fun.
Legendary – I’m working toward a Twilight casually. Started on November 23rd. All I need is Dusk.
Friends – I could run the same path of a dungeon a 100 times, and as long as my guild is on and along with me, I won’t be bored. They are fun just to talk to, and I enjoy watching them make progress towards their in game goals. Guild of about 10 actives. We’ll be trying Giuld Bounties as soon as the upgrade finishes(started yesterday), hopefully that will be fun.

This is a good question, and one that I think a lot of people should review in their own minds.
What motivates me to play is fulfillment. Not necessarily happiness, nor material rewards (gearing up). I like experiences. I like getting better (self improvement). I have certain goals that I accomplish that reflect this.
1. Experience the game world. For example, I want to view every vista fully. A lot of people hit up vistas and then hit escape because they just want to checkmark it. I want to appreciate the artwork of the world.
Additionally, I love to stop and listen to some NPC conversations. A lot of them really are hilarious if you stop and take some time.
2. I want to become proficient with all classes. I have 8 characters, one from each class. I’ll be really good (not an expert by far) at one or two classes, but I think it’s important to understand each class. That way if you group up with others, you’ll know what they’re doing. Additionally, if I’m PVPing against someone, I’ll have a general idea of what kind of strategies they’ll use.
3. I want to help others. I have a guild and people with their own goals. I want people to achieve those goals and find fulfillment as well.
Some of you may be wondering why I didn’t say I want happiness – after all, this is a game, isn’t it? Yes, I do want happiness, however, I take it as a byproduct of fulfillment. In other words, if I do something challenging that I failed at (let’s say I ran FotM 26 and I failed a run) I might be frustrated, but so long as I learned something valuable from it, I am achieving one of my goals, and thus working towards my fulfillment. That makes me happy despite a setback of failing a run.
Anyways. That’s what I think. Since you asked. ^_~
What motivates me to play . . .
Boredom, mostly. A desire to do something other than watch what network television tries to tell me I want to watch? And of course, the fact most of the people in my generation would rather do really stupid self-destructive things for fun that I don’t find entertaining at all?
I mean, I also really like the world design and the feel of it. That counts for some of it, because otherwise I’d be playing something else. Like combing through my old CD-roms and digging out some game I enjoyed beating into past eighteen ways, and inventing #19
I don’t know anymore. I usually like five things in MMOs: playing with friends, exploring the world, visiting my favourite atmospheric spots, getting a good look to my character, and doing menial things/farming while listening to audiobook.
I’ve gotten my character to look quite good. I’m not big on the dungeon armors but I’ve assembled a mix of cultural and crafted armor that looks the way I like it.
I only have two friends left who actively play now.
Something about the world and the camera makes it hard for me to get atmosphere out of this game. [It feels flat somehow?]
So I’m left with the audiobook supplement, but even that I’m growing tired of.
Time for a break. At least there’s no monthly fee ticking and it’ll all still be here in the future.
My main motivation to play is the enjoyment I get out of the game
my goals/foci are mostly leveling/outfitting alts, WvW, exploration, enjoying the mechanics for their own sake, immersion play.
Northern Shiverpeaks
Well, I was motivated by having my small group of friends roll around on adventures in a semi-sandbox but my friends all left to play other games (not the first time this has happened.)
Now I’m motivated by all of the new content.
Total pieces of ascended gear: 0
Map completion: 50%
Status on legendary: I have a gift of bolt and 100 skill points.
As you can see, I have a lot of game to play. It’s a big world out there.
I just wanted a AAA MMO with no sub made by ArenaNet. And it’s awesome.”
for majority its farming for a legendary i think. or farming dungeons to get their sets etc…
the reason for that is the nature of humans mind…. ppl set a goal and they start progressing to achiev that goal….
our mind is a rly strange tool and it produces fun by himself by thinking if u reach this goal something is better than before… its an illusion, but we r doing it every day….
for most ppl the fun part is not playing the game…. its chasing their goal that was set by their mind…. this stimulates us and we feel good.
its not the goal that makes us happy or make us do something. our mind is just fooling us….
its the stupid game of humanity….
and u can see it everywhere…
we r pretty much creating our own reality…. set yourself a goal and observe how your mind is working on achieving this goal…
this is also the reason why ppl started farming cof path 1…. their goal is a legendary and their mind will try everything to make this happen. find the best way of achieving this goal…. this is also the reason why our world is falling apart…
money and might can turn ppl into rly bad ppl….
thats whats happening in games too….. there r ppl who want to have lots of money…. to achiev this goal they change their thinking pattern….
I like to make goals for myself – those usually have to do with mastering a new profession. Now that I have found my sweet spot with Ele, Mesmer and Guardian, I’m working on Thief. Once I’ve sated those urges I’ll probably start to work on legendaries for each of them.
And when I don’t feel like working on my current goal I’ll do whatever else I feel like. I have lots of stuff to do!
I also like to play because I’ve made a few friends in game and I like to chat with them, do group activities etc.
WvW and my guild. I fight for my world and play for my guild!
Guild : OBEY (The Legacy) I call it Obay , TLC (WvW) , UNIV (other)
Server : FA
A break from other games
I might pop on to do my Dailies, but if they are too much of a hassle I usually log out again.
Other than that I mainly log in to say ‘Howdy’ to a few friends, and maybe 10-15mins in WvW.
Don’t get me wrong, I still like the game, but it stopped being on my ‘most played’ list a long time ago
After getting my legendary… Not really anything. lol
We’ll see about this March WvW update.
“That big kitten Norn with The Juggernaut”
-i dont have 100% completion yet
-i havent started pvp
-i am waiting for some tweaks to wvw to get into it
-i would like to start an alt, but i think that i will never play enough to gear it as much as my main… but maybe eventually. maybe ill just use another class for pvp…
I have no motivation to play anymore. It had been WvWvW but there’s too much pve grind nonsense with dailies and guild missions everyone does first, so I’m either too early for the real action or too late after I can force myself to do my daily grind. WvWvW and working towards new armor and weapons skins was just fine for me, everything else was fighting other servers and hanging out with guildies and friends.

I’m getting less and less motivated to play. The recent changes, added currencies, fragmentation, and forcing me to play the game their way have sucked a lot of the life out of the game for me.
Being required to do guild missions to get some of the ascended gear really just ticks me off greatly. You’re entirely at the mercy of some guild leader or officer to start guild missions to get gear that YOU personally need to progress in the fractals.
It’s the most brainless and stupid thing they’ve done yet in this game, and shows that they really don’t understand the players’ motivations for playing games.
I want to progress in the fractals. I can’t because I’m at the mercy of officers and leaders of guilds. That’s idiocy, sorry. Tying two completely unrelated activities together like that and forcing you to play a part of the game you either can’t play, or have no interest in….makes no logical sense at all. If I want to progress in the fractals, and that’s my endgame…I should be able to get what I need to progress while I’m IN the fractals.
This is anti-progression.
My motivation right now is working out the sweet-spot in a couple of builds, and doing activities with my guild. This is the first time I’ve been in an active guild (that hasn’t fizzled out), and I’m just enjoying doing PvE and WvW with them.
I still haven’t visited all of the PvE areas yet, so there’s that, and I’d like to get into PvP at some point.
If WvW did not exist I would have stopped playing this game a long time ago. Seriously I see people playing PvE all the time farming the same terrible missions over and over again and I really wonder how they can bring themselves to do it. The PvE in this game is very limited.
Your own opinion-one could very well say the same thing about WvW (it’s even more limited, but again, that’s ALSO my opinion). PvE open world is fun for me to this day, but that’s OK, because you are not me, and I am not you.
As far as what motivates me to play, the excitement of trying new things with the characters I’ve grown to love and have developed over time (many of which are still a work in progress), new builds, new possibilities, exploring new corners of this world (I have 100% map completion but can honestly say I haven’t explored every secret corner of the world), and very importantly, sharing with both friends an strangers online (helping others, cheering them up, etc.) Playing the game is its own reward for me, as it is a very nice universe to let yourself live temporarily in.
I very much either live through my characters or role-play them, so that adds up endless replaying value for myself.
