One of the things that drew me to this game in the first place was how the weapon system was designed in a way that lets the designers add new abilities to the various classes simply by adding new weapons and considering how a lot of the locations in the first Guild Wars were modeled after real world civilizations I thought I would ask what weapons do you expect to see and what abilities do you think they will give to the different classes?

Given how the folks on the forums seem to play this game, they should add backhoe, pitchforch, sickle, shovel, and pruning shears.
- Farmers keep demanding the game cater to them, so give them farming tools.

And a little plot outside of DR that they can log into every day and plant carrots and turnips on…

And maybe do quests for a Panda guy from Cantha…

and…

But seriously…

I’d like to see:

Scythe – for a dervish / paragon hybrid class, and necros and ritualists.
Greataxe – for warriors and the dervish / paragon hybrid.
Bola – thief, ritualist, and warrior.
flail – warrior and one other, but who I don’t know.
javelin (land spear) – for ritualists and the dervish / paragon hybrid.

- As in, I think new weapons and classes should come in a package together when / if they come.

Scythe

We have it, it’s called a staff. It is physically impossible for a scythe to work as a martial weapon, and more importantly it’s visually impossible, you couldn’t possibly animate a character using a scythe and not have it look completely ridiculous. The only exception is b-list anime and that’s because they use a sickening amount of cross cuts.

My List

  • Cannon (over the shoulder, fits in with a cantha expansion)
  • Great Axe
  • Spear (on land obviously)
  • Throwing Spear
  • Throwing Hammer (a real throwing hammer, not WoW style)
  • Meteor hammer (cantha)
  • Rope Dart (like a whip, but much cooler, and fits in cantha)
  • Main Hand Shield (just for guardian)

That’s just using a scythe like a martial staff, and it does look ridiculous since a scythe should be significantly larger and heavier than that. And if you’re going to animate it that way why not just add a martial staff and give it a scythe skin?

Zasalamel is horribly animated. Notice how he’s blurred out for the majority of his animations? They couldn’t think of more than three or four moves that didn’t have massive clipping and movement issues and so they had to use gaudy smear frames to cover up the remainder of his moveset. And that makes perfect sense since scythes are designed to be used in one single repetitive motion, the amount of ways you can animate them without their wielders anatomy getting in the way is almost zero.

And please explain what would be so difficult about animating a cannon? You hold it and shoot, don’t we already two such weapons in the game? Hand held cannons were a common weapon in China for almost 300 years before spreading to Europe, hence the comment about Cantha. If you’re going to challenge someones ideas, make sure you actually have some idea what you’re talking about first.

Well, harvesting scythes aren’t a weapon of war, that’s true (not without some adjustments, anyway) – war scythes look much more like naginata than a harvesting tool. Animation IS possible, though, like GW1 has already shown. Yes, it’s not very realistic – but then, for example, GS animation has absolutely nothing to do with real 2h sword usage (especially considering the size and weight of some GS skins).

I fully expect scythes to make a comeback some day.

On topic, though – spears. It’s very surprising that such a basic and common weapon got relegated to pure underwater use. Two-handed axes, crossbows and martial staves might also be nice.

I really wish I could get a hammer on my necro (just like the Archdiviner in Cliffside Fractal).

Picking a completely new weapon set is difficult. I can easily see Polearms, Crossbows, etc.

What we need to remember is that new weapons should have a new flavour to them. For example, a polearm shouldn’t just be a greatsword with another look. It should provide a a different set of perks, creating new gameplay experiences.

And that makes perfect sense since scythes are designed to be used in one single repetitive motion, the amount of ways you can animate them without their wielders anatomy getting in the way is almost zero.

The bad animations in Zasalamel are more an issue of the studio than the concept – they could have easily been done right. He’s a proof of concept. On top of that, a fighting game character like Zasalamel, in a fighting game like the Soul Calibur series, has a ridiculously larger amount of different attack animations than anything in GW2. The job becomes exponentially easier when you need 10 different animations instead of 50 or 100. Even more so when they can be simpler or more “grounded” animations, instead of the circus trick and over the top kungkittenmovie/anime acrobatics expected from SC.

And that’s only accounting for them being used as melee weapons. The sky’s the limit when it comes to more magic-oriented ways – e.g.: Mesmers and greatswords.

And please explain what would be so difficult about animating a cannon? You hold it and shoot, don’t we already two such weapons in the game? Hand held cannons were a common weapon in China for almost 300 years before spreading to Europe, hence the comment about Cantha.

Nothing… Except, as you’d say, it would be ridiculous.

Chinese “hand cannons” were called cannons because they hadn’t invented the concept of a rifle yet. They’re, in everything, more cumbersome, clumbsy and inefficient rifles, which is why they went the way of the dodo once rifles came around. Except for the ones that were basically portable siege weaponry, like mortars… Same issue.

We have rifles in this game. And proper cannons. According to your “this wouldn’t apply/would look silly in real life” argument then it’s the exact same issue. No sane living being would carry around a “hand cannon” when they have rifles and pistols. The only way to turn it into something worth shooting would be to turn it into an actual siege weapon in power, which, in turn, would blow up the limbs and/or torso of the user whenever shot.

If you’re going to challenge someones ideas, make sure you actually have some idea what you’re talking about first.

You first.

Obviously, they’re both possibly within a game based on magic and fiction. My only problem is that you raise the issue that Scythes can never be used for combat in any fashion, not even within the fantasy-fueled universe of GW, but a hand cannon would fit like a glove in this world.

By the way, scythes, and other hacked up varieties, were used as weapons, actually, by the Chinese for once, and about every farmer-encompassing army prior to firearms being invented – inefficient, but as it turns out, a lot less so than trying to punch a sword.

leman makes a good point there. A lot of weapons have a ‘flavour’ that is carried by that weapon across professions. Consider the mainhand sword, for instance – every profession has a gap-closer with mainhand sword (although the ranger’s are a little unusual) and every profession but the ranger has a flurry-style attack. Now, there are exceptions to the rules – mesmer use of greatswords and, ironically, warriors using axes as a melee weapon – but we should think about the flavour of a weapon rather than just suggesting whatever weapon comes to mind.

With that, here are my thoughts:

Greataxe:
Professions: Warrior, Ranger
Flavour: All out offense. If you pick a greataxe, you’re probably looking to hack things apart. Slow, powerful attacks, with debilitating conditions that hinder the opponent’s ability to defend against it and otherwise fight back.

Polearm
Professions: Warrior, Guardian
Flavour: Tactical weapon, built around keeping your opponent at arm’s length. Every profession using a polearm should have at least one ‘set’ stance skill (which triggers an attack when an enemy comes within range). Traditional uses for polearms apart from pikes also included cleaving armour and yanking foes off horses (or their feet) so skills inflicting vulnerability and knockdowns would be appropriate. Pure pikes should probably be limited (there isn’t much cavalry to deploy pike blocks against, and even if there was a pike block would be suicide against magical and technological artillery) – I’d be looking at the polearms with various hooking blades like halberds, spetums and fauchards rather than simple spearheads.

Fighting staff
Professions: Ranger, Thief, Elementalist
Flavour: Blocks, flurries, agility, and sweeping attacks striking all nearby enemies will likely be the hallmark of most fighting staff wielders. FIghting staves may incorporate blades, spikes, or other nastiness on their striking edges, but mechanically are equivalent to a simple quarterstaff. Elementalists with fighting staves are special - we used to call them dervishes.

Crossbow
Professions: Warrior, Ranger, Thief, Engineer
Flavour: Slow, powerful attacks. No multishot-type attacks – the slow rate-of-fire, even compared to muzzle-loading firearms, was a characteristic of crossbows, and while repeating crossbows did exist in China, they were a very different weapon in how they were used, probably more akin to an arrow cart in GW2 terms. Engineers may be an exception, having a skin involving firing multiple bolts at once in a spread in a similar manner to Fan of Fire and Poison Volley. (Other engineer crossbow skills focus on ‘trick arrows’ similar to Green Arrow and Hawkeye, but launched from a nice mechanical crossbow rather than some crude curved stick with a string attached.)

People don’t hate Scarlet like Game of Thrones fans hate Joffrey.

Scythe and to the guy who said gw1 used it as a martial staff doesn’t look at the animation right they focus on making contact with the blade when swinging… Gotta be in game to view them better.

Besides that the only other weapons I wanna see are…

dual tonfa they were in gw1 but the skin was only used as a sword
Great axe they said they would add this sooner or later
Polearms such as halberds one thing that they said they were interested in back in sep 2011
Pistols and rifles usable on other classes…. To few use them This one they never said anything about
spiked/bladed gauntlets
Flail for warrior and guardian

And the one I know wont make it just because it’s a puzzling one to think of….. Explosive gauntlets…. The only class they would fit is engineer… Think of it like you punch and it shoots them with a buckshot point blank or injects poison… Good potential but very doubtful they would add something for engineer only.

Thank-you captain obvious, however in my very first post I blatantly stated they couldn’t be used as a martial weapon, you do know what martial means right? No duh they can be used as a magical weapon, anything can be, and as I also said, they already are in the from of staff skins.

And please explain what would be so difficult about animating a cannon? You hold it and shoot, don’t we already two such weapons in the game? Hand held cannons were a common weapon in China for almost 300 years before spreading to Europe, hence the comment about Cantha.

The same logic could be applied to claim that there should be nothing but guns in the game, since in real life they rendered all forms of melee combat useless. Yet how many weapons are there besides guns? That’s right, plenty.

As previously stated in this post, I did not say at any point that scythes ‘could not be used in any fashion’, merely as martial weapons. Furthermore, your inability to properly read and comprehend the posts you are responding to is not my problem so I’m not addressing the issue any more than that.

Any weapon that would only make sense for the engineer really should be a kit, not a conventional weapon. Every ‘normal’ weapon currently in the game is shared by at least two professions.

The same logic could be applied to claim that there should be nothing but guns in the game, since in real life they rendered all forms of melee combat useless. Yet how many weapons are there besides guns? That’s right, plenty.

That’s a common misconception, but pikes continued to be used by infantry from the widespread adoption of handguns to the widespread adoption of bayonets in the 18th century. Cavalry charges with lance and sabre continued right into the world wars (when their function was supplanted by fast-moving tanks, which the charr don’t have…yet, anyway), and World War 1 museums are filled with improvised melee weapons for fighting inside trenches.

People have this idea that melee weapons magically disappeared as soon as guns came on the scene, but it’s very wrong. In the history of gunpowder weapons, the complete elimination of melee weapons from battlefields was a relatively recent phenomenon – and ours is a universe without magically enhanced weapons and armour. In a universe where alloys exist that are as far advanced of steel as steel is to bronze, where it would be reasonable to presume that such alloys are too valuable to be used as ammunition*, and where magic and other means can allow a melee warrior to cross half the effective range of a firearm in a moment, it’s easy to see how melee weapons might remain in widespread use despite the availability of what appear to be roughly 19th-century firearms.

*Or that simply may not be effective when used as ammunition. The physical properties you’d want for armour or melee weapons don’t match exactly with those you’d want for a projectile, after all.

To those who think Scarlet hate means she’s succeeded as a villain:
People don’t hate Scarlet like Game of Thrones fans hate Joffrey.
They hate her the way Star Wars fans hate Jar Jar Binks.

I’d like to see an Asuran laser cannon mounted on the back of a Charr-trained dolyak. The dolyak’s name would be Dolly and would be fully customisable with many colours and patterns, with a little stream of stars coming from its nostrils and bows in its tail so I could proclaim “Yes, I am man enough to have something as sissy as this in a video game!”. The whole weapon could be called the My Little Dolyak Laser Cannon Combo. As an optional accessory, a basket can hang on each side with a scantily clad, grenade throwing dancing girl residing in each.
