What profession for your Tengu?
I don’t agree, because you will need to buy the expansion to get Tengu in the first place. New players if they’re smart, won’t buy the expansion before the base game, because I suppose it won’t work anyway. It sounds like you deny the game a touch of progress simply because new players will be confused. Tengu would appear in a expansion, so it’ll be obvious and very natural that their personal story would take place further in the lore than the base game did. This is what people call expansion, which means expanding all the game had to offer until now.
Except they have said they might not have expansions. That they want see if they can open up and expand through the use of the Living Story.

You are wrong.
Tengu (insert new profession here or none if no new classes).

Are you saying that the “new framework for how an MMO can grow it’s universe” is a traditional expansion?
Because it looks very much to me like an expansion through the use of the Living Story (which is what I said).
I didn’t bother to define the term expansion as being a traditional boxed expansion as I thought it was obvious to those reading the thread.

IF Tengu were ever released (and oh boy I do wish, I love me some bird people) I would delete my guardian (max level, don’t care) and make one of those. Also buy another slot for either a mesmer or necro. And for medium…maybe delete my engie or thief.
I would want one of each weight profession. Gimme my birds! :>

So… Everybody is asking for Tengu since launch and now that Mordremoth is rising, Tengu might be forced to leave their walls to face this new threat that appears to be… Quite near them.
So back to the question. What profession will your Tengu be? I was thinking about making a Phoenix inspired Tengu as an elementalist.
I certainly have never asked, wanted, desired Tengu as a race ..so its at least everbody MINUS 1.
The equipment, armor animation work would in my singular opinion make having Tengu a large waste of resources.I would much prefer anyway another of the humanised races from GW1 , I miss my spear wielding paragon most.
minus two, I’m not expecting any new professions/races
Tengu, humans and charr are the 3 races with a lore setting that makes them work with all professions, without making an ‘unusual’ character.
In GW1, the only profession they didn’t have was Dervish.
Still, if you had to pick only one profession from each class, the best choices would be:
- Warrior.
- Ranger.
- Mesmer.For a second batch, you’d go with:
- Guardian.
- Thief.
- Elementalist. But if they released a 3rd soldier profession, I’ll go with that one first, probably. That, or stick with the setting choices, and make a sylvari, and asura and a charr of the 3rd soldier profession instead.
Well, looking at what the various tengu groups had… (ignoring Beyond, because Beyond gave every faction everything and is thus less indicative of common trends)
Warriors are found among all tengu clans. Rangers were found among all of the clans except the Angchu and Sensali. Mesmers are found in all the Tyrian clans as well as the Angchu, while necromancers are missing from the Caromi, but present among the Sensali and Angchu.
Less common professions are monks (Avicara only), assassins (Angchu and Sensali only) and ritualists (Star tengu only). Tengu elementalists are only present in Beyond and that one boss in Mineral Springs.
Translated into GW2, this would imply that warriors, rangers, mesmers and necromancers would be common. Guardians and thieves, less so, with elementalists being the least common of all. Engineers are hard to call because obviously they didn’t exist in GW1 – my gut feeling, though, is that the tengu are likely to be a fairly conservative race in that respect and not have a high adoption rate of the engineer profession.

They hate her the way Star Wars fans hate Jar Jar Binks.
A new race or profession is HIGHLY UNLIKELY, this game was released August 28, 2012. They already stated they dont want more classes because their terrible balancing team cant balance the game still after over 2 years! To make matters worse its the SAME SKILLS they haven’t added any since release! Lastly to answer you pipe dream of a question, id like a new profession over race.
From what they said way back when, a race is more likely than a profession, for pretty much exactly the reason you cite: a race is purely cosmetic as far as sPvP is concerned, while new professions have the potential to create new balance headaches.

^ Exactly this. A new race would be much less work going forward than a new profession.

Because of the troubles with the orrian and the “four winds” setting, necromancers would have become less common in favor of elementalists by GW2.
Possible, but despite Dougal blaming distrust of necromancers on the Risen, humans and possibly norn were uneasy about necromancers back in GW1 as well, so I suspect that’s simply a case of using (relatively) recent events to explain something that goes back much further. Tengu, on the other hand, have (apart from the Caromi) always had a significant proportion of necromancers while not having such a large proportion of other professions.
The “four winds” setting could indicate a higher focus on elemental magic than in the past, particularly if if it’s linked with the Asian association of each direction with a season and element. (Note, though, that the Asian element system is different to the European one – they substitute Air for Metal and Wood). However, it’s also possible that they could do something like associate each wind with its own profession and leave the elementalist out entirely.

I think that Space Marine would be a cool class for my Tengu.
Perhaps it is a foolish hope, but I’ve had a character developed and ready to go for months in case Tengu are released.
Kaedo Soarscream, warrior, female.
She is middle-aged and, as part of her backstory, she has had three children (potential future characters, if Tengu are indeed released). Kaedo, however, would be my main Tengu.
I’ve got a mule character also created to reserve my Tengu name (Sakai Whisperwing) in case they get released. XD Haven’t fully decided on his backstory yet. That I’ll leave to what sort of personal story and lore the Tengu have so I can ground him better in the world.

My point is that the “new framework”, “the living world was just the beginning” indicates something beyond the biweekly updates the LW team has developed so far. Surely living world will be an inspiration source for HoT, but I dont think it will consist of a bundle of such episodes, if any. Rather we will see our universe expand, (therefore expansion although different), and it will be like nothing else we’ve seen before, a new framework. It will expand, but not through living world alone.

I’m assuming when you say expand you mean either maps or story. If we assume no traditional boxed expansion, how do you think there will be new maps/story without the use of the Living Story? I think it most unlikely they will open up new maps from now on without it being tied to the Living Story (or boxed expansion if they do go that route).

I think they will release what we can expect from a traditional expansion, sold in retail stores, but with something that makes it unique, new. I don’t know what that might be, but I trust Anet to come up with something great.
I think the general concept we will see ahead per year is something along the lines of:
One elder dragon being the base for each year: one expansion per year, living world in between to provide the setting for the next, and super adventure box / feature pack twice a year to fill the gap between the Xpac and LW. That is my guess at Anets new framework.
The Tengu are all but released and have been for quite a while, I’m sure. Their homelands, cultural background and general body build are already established.
I would be very surprised if they are not included with the new expansion.
EDIT: Oh and totally an extravagant coloured elementalist.
