Just reading the updates on the wiki and happy to read this;

“Revamping dungeons, including rebalancing them, adding new fractals, awarding more tokens, and making them “more fun to play”"

Which always intrigued me because, and I ask, what’s fun? To me, fun is more laughing and joyous. Maybe a little puzzling or something for me to have to ponder for a bit. Something that has to be cultivated and nurtured is good too. That to me is rewarding fun!

What’s not fun is a lot of stress and adrenaline brought on by frenetic pacing or too much difficulty. Being locked into something for hours, like FotM in it’’s buggier days, is not much fun for me either. I truly have a deep dislike for FotM

So, what’s your idea of fun and what isn’t? I’d love to hear some other’s point of view on what kind of fun things should be added. If anyone wants to discuss intrinsic vs extrinsic, have at it too

Fun is more challenging, requiring me to use my class to its limit.

Bonus points if it’s more dynamic, having to respond to new variations and unexpected events.

Fun is mostly anything that involves large crowds that don’t end up in overflow/unplayable lag/ everything dies before you can move. It’s an MMO after all.

For this reason, I really don’t like instances.

For once you have tasted flight you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skywards,
for there you have been and there you will long to return.

Fun is exploring, like finding underground cave systems that you would never have seen if you didn’t just blindly do map completion. Its cool that the game also rewards you for exploring almost as much as it does for anything else.

Fun is dying over and over for me. I like being bankrupt by armor repair costs.

Prince Rurik and Lady Althea. Anyone else see the incompatibilty here?

Fun is exploring while overcoming reasonable obstacles/challenges.
Fun is gathering materials along the way to create/build items which make challenges easier.

However my definition of “fun” appears to vary extremely from the devs definition of “fun”.

Where are my gem sales? I want gem sales! Nerf EVERYTHING!

Fun for me is doing things my own way, (or our own way, for a party) and succeeding in a specific content regardless. It’s the thrill of experimenting and finding what suits us best and still complete the task at hand, be it dungeons or missions etc. Be a rebel and get rewarded for it.

Fun is also not being too focused on something that if it doesn’t go smooth you go all kitten off. Like that one time in WvW, this guildie of mine was caught not fighting in the middle of a siege. When the guild leader ask why he was not fighting, he said, “Wait, I’m telling a story here to this other guy”.. :p… And all around us, invaders and allies alike were dying… that was weird :p

Fun is challenging, but as you said, not frenetic and not so challenging it requires you to come up with every shady trick and borderline exploit. Fun for a wide audience probably means multiple difficulty levels, honestly…as MMOs like this one have a wide variety of player types.

When I hear people talking about stacking on a mob because it’s attacks won’t work…or how you can kill this mob from safety from this ledge…. I’m kicked right out of my fun zone already. Just cleaning up the dungeons and making the rewards consistent would be awesome.

“Revamping dungeons, including rebalancing them, our aim is to reduce the people running those dungeons by making them 2-3 times longer to complete, making them die 2-3 times more and making the loot completely rubbish. A good example is our 1st dungeon revamp of AC, which reduced the people wanting to run that dungeon by a amazing 80% but we can do better! Our aim in the next dungeon revamp is to put off 99% of players running the dungeon! We know we can get there!”"[/quote]

Corrected the mission statement for the truth…

What’s fun?

Farming a dungeon for hours because it’s the only (easy) way to get gold… Guaranteed my optinion will change at the end of the month when the difficulty of acquiring gold will be greatly increased.

Yeah this , I hate all the dungeon exploits and mob skipping. I think they should just make the mobs have 25% less health but never leash.

And if gold is harder to get then the prices will come down, if people refuse to buy. But people always buy, shrug you bring the prices on yourself :p

Fun for me was open world casual game play, with friends, exploring learning the world doing the odd jump puzzle now and then and just enjoying myself and getting Real appropriate rewards for it. (post beta)

Whats not fun for me is insane Dungeons/Fotm, staring at my body for 20mins while others attempted to survive because i cannot way point, while getting nothing but trash rewards in every chest..

Not fun is trash mobs stronger than the bosses and time gated equipment no one can get except the repetitive hard cores, that have zero lives and care nothing for others but their next goal to achieve..

Whats not fun is instant kill bosses like Kholer and the first spider boss in TA, there is no challenge when your whole team instantly dies…and whats up with the level requirements lvl 35 in AC yeah right…
