I’m thinking about dropping some berserker pieces for valkyrie, and it would put me at 45% critical chance. I play a guardian, but I know critical chance applies to every profession. What is a decent critical chance for a power based toon?

A descent chance is when you have 100% crit chance after applying 20% from fury and crit food.

you want crit chance to be half of your crit damage OR equal to it.

Examples

50% crit chance, 100% crit damage
25% crit chance, 50% crit damage
OR
50% crit chance, 50% crit damage
20% crit chance, 20% crit damage

If you bother to find the crit charts people have worked out those are the sweet spots.

There is no objective “best” crit chance. It depends on what you’re doing.

The purely unscientific rule of thumb I’ve used is to sit around 50%. You see, the more you increase precision, the less it matters. Going from 4% crit rate to 14% crit rate is a much bigger deal than going from 80% to 90%, since with the former you’ll crit 350% times as often, and with the latter you’ll crit only 12% more often.

50% is the sweet spot, because at that point you no longer get large percentage gains with additional precision, and you’ll be hitting crits just as often as you won’t be.

There are other ways to build this, though. Traits and equipment can change this around, and some people build for having 50% crit rate with fury if they have high fury uptime, or 50% after traits and sigils have taken effect. The guardian, for instance, has the Right-Handed Strength trait, which can give them an additional 15% crit chance when using a one handed weapon.

I wouldn’t worry too much about going a little above or below it, though.

I don’t have opinions. I only have facts I can’t adequately prove.

I tend to go for 50%.

If my build is going to give me a lot of fury uptime +20% then I aim for 30% but still 50% overall.

50% crit chance is fairly easy to get without sacrificing your other stats too much.

A descent chance is when you have 100% crit chance after applying 20% from fury and crit food.

But then you waste precision, as it caps at 99%.

~47% for a Guardian with Hammer or ~54% for a Sword without Fury/Banner/Food.

Berserker staff ele with 36% crit chance and 86% crit damage, totally unbuffed. Prior to the 10 Dec. balance I was getting 81% crit damage.

For PvE, you want at least 90% or higher after food buff, banner of discipline and fury.
