What's changed?
This game has changed so much, it would be almost impossible to outline in a single post everything that’s changed. A lot of the stuff has come and gone (some of which will be back again), but of the major changes…
The introduction of fractals (a series of minidungeons), a new dungeon path in TA, a revamp of both Tequatl and the Ascalon Catacombs dungeons, WvW rank levels now exist, glory in SPvP is being phased out and there are new maps and an observation mode), an account wallet has been added for currencies, dailies and monthlies now reward laurels (but you can choose the ones you want to do most out of a rather long list), ascended armor and weapons have been introduced, champions are now more rewarding to fight, a new healing skill has been added for each profession, you can now preview armor and weapons and dyes in the trading post, the living story now does content updates every two weeks (the next one being January 21st), Southsun Island now exists (but most people don’t go there), there are new jumping puzzles since you left (I love jumping puzzles), there’s a new rotation of minigames since you left.
I mean a lot has happened.
So now after about 1 and a half years, has anything changed? I’m gonna level up an Asura guardian for now, but any info about major changes since the game started would be nice.
As Vayne pointed out, much has changed. The core gameplay is still the same, however, including the professions. So if you didn’t find a profession you really liked, that may not change.
That said, I play all races and professions, consider them all unique and very well-differentiated and think it likely you can create a character you will enjoy, once you get familiar with it.
You may have seen it already, but the GW2 Wiki Professions page gives a good overview of the options if your current choice doesn’t work out. And, of course, the profession forums are here for the more detailed stuff.
Whatever you end up doing, I hope you have as much fun as I have!

The only thing I’d say, is that even some of the professions have changed. I didn’t like the necromancer at launch (I felt it was far too limited) and now it’s one of my favorite professions.

They’ve definitely gotten better, and the Necromancer is a good example. Heck, even Turreteer (for Engineers) is viable now, thanks to the last patch, and the devs have listed further build diversity as a goal, so the future looks bright.
The styles of play are still basically the same, though, so I’m hoping it’s not a case of not liking any of them, because I think there’s something to like about all of them.

I don’t know, he got to like level 22. I’m not sure by level 22, you can even know what the style of play is really like, particularly the end game style of play.

Granted, some professions don’t really “come alive” until higher levels (I’m looking at you, Mesmer), but odds are if a player doesn’t like, say, stabbing things with a sword at level 22, it probably won’t be any more appealing at level 80.

If i where you I would try out a couple of classes. Its quite easy to test out max level characters via the pvp hub.
The only thing you need to do is complete the starting quest → enter the pvp hub (crossed swords at the top of your screen). Once inside the hub you can ask around for the practice NPCs.
The hub gives you free respecs, acces to all sigils, amulets etc. So youre free to experiment and test classes untill you find something that suits your playstyle.

I found some characters to be particularly hard to play at low levels though. I died a lot on my ele until I got into my 30s, probably around level 35-36.
So if you don’t like dying, that’s a big change in how the game plays. The ele might be perfect for you, but you’d never know if you hate dying so you gave up on it.
You need to make a Warrior. Use Greatsword, Axe/Axe or Axe/Mace. Go to Queensdale and ask in /map where the train is. Follow the large group of players around killing bosses.
I got this game really early on, I played in the pre-order betas. But when the game came out I only made it to level 22 before losing interest. The game art and graphics are amazing so is the ambiance of the world and I really loved the Asura, but I couldn’t find a class with abilities that I thought were fun to use and all of the classes sort of felt the same. profession design has not really changed. this year of development was filled with trait number reshuffling that didn’t tackle main flaws and issues with the core design. your experience will be different at level 80 if you keep playing because you will have more access to abilities, but that experience does not change all that much for the better. you will hit a wall again and think to yourself why bother or start on the trek of grinding for best in slot gear which will cost you a lot of time, gold and/or money to even outfit 1 character. even with better gear it is still the same ol’ same ol’. there will be some mmo competition coming this april and anet plans to drop a content patch, so I’d wait until then to see what has changed for the better. alternatively, if you plan on leveling up your guardian, I suggest doing so without purchasing gems or making a real investment in your character until you see the direction/state of the game after april.

I think the biggest problem now is that every zone i’ve been to is so empty. It’s like being the only group at a theme park, really lonely and kinda sad.
